Women’s Soccer Picks Up 5-1 Win Over Adrian at Zuidema Field

Calvin women’s soccer hosted Adrian on Tuesday looking to end the Bulldogs three-game win streak. With a pair of goals in the opening twelve minutes, the Knights did just that, setting the tone early and playing a complete game as they defeated the Bulldogs, 5-1. With the win, the Knights move to 3-1-1 in the MIAA and 6-1-1 overall, while Adrian drops to 4-2-0 in conference and 6-3-1. Calvin’s next contest comes up on Saturday when it will travel to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets, with kickoff set for noon.

Men’s Golf Moves Into Share of First Place in MIAA Overall Team Standings

KALAMAZOO - With three league competitions left in the MIAA men’s fall golf season, Calvin has moved into a tie for first place in the overall standings. Calvin made up five strokes on league-leading Hope Monday afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Kalamazoo Country Club. Calvin finished second at the MIAA Jamboree with a team score of 307 strokes, six strokes behind first place Trine and five strokes ahead of Hope which took fourth at Monday’s tournament. Calvin and Hope now share first place with overall team totals of 1,538 strokes. Adrian sits 10 strokes back of the Knights and Flying Dutchmen in the overall standings while Trine is in fourth, 13 strokes out of first place. In Monday’s competition, Calvin had three golfers fire sub-80 round led by junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) who carded a score of 73 that was good for third place individually.  Van Noord remains in first place in the overall MIAA individual standings.

Taylor Pruis Named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in Men’s Soccer

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin midfielder Taylor Pruis its Offensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer for games played through Sept. 22. Pruis, a sophomore from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS), scored two goals and assisted on two more in leading the Knights to a 5-1 victory over Hope in their MIAA opener. He also had a pair of assists in a 5-0 non-conference win over Bluffton, Ohio. Pruis is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Trine for a 4 p.m. contest.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Receive Visits from U.S. Olympic Swimmers

Trust yourself, don’t be afraid to fail, and live in the moment – those were the three key points that Olympic swimmer Brendan Hansen said he learned the hard way when he spoke to Calvin’s swimming and diving teams last Friday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center. Hansen, a six-time Olympic medalist, has been to three separate Olympics – 2004 in Athens, 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London.Hansen was one of two U.S. Olympic swimmers to stop by the Calvin practice last Friday as Kim Vandenberg – a 2008 bronze medalist in the 800 meter freestyle relay – also showed up to meet and greet the Calvin teams.

Calvin Women’s Golf Takes Fourth at Calvin-Hope Challenge

BYRON CENTER - The Calvin women’s golf team played host to the Calvin/Hope Challenge on Saturday at the Railside Golf Club. The Knights took fourth in a four team field with a team score of 357 strokes, one stroke behind Hope. The tournament also featured two teams from the CCIW in North Central and Wheaton (IL). North Central won the tournament with a score of 331 with Wheaton second at 341. Calvin senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was the top finisher for the Knights, placing seventh with a round of 86. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 88 as did sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School). Calvin is back in action on September 24 when it competes at an MIAA Tournament hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.

Calvin Men’s Golf Team Ties for First at MIAA Jamboree

ALMA - At the midpoint of the season, Calvin is in the thick of the MIAA title hunt. On Saturday at the fourth MIAA Jamboree of the year, Calvin tied for first with rival Hope with a team score of 300 strokes. The Knights are now in sole possession of second place in the MIAA overall standings and are just five strokes behind league-leading Hope.  Saturday’s competition was hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club and was the fourth of eight scheduled MIAA Jamborees. Sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) came up with a clutch performance for Calvin, finishing in a three-way tie for first place individually with a score of 72. It marks the second consecutive tournament Calvin has had a team member earn medalist honors as James Van Noord did so in a tournament on Wednesday hosted by Olivet. Senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) was right behind Crow with a round of 73 while Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS had a 77, senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 78 and freshman Brad Smit (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) a 79. Calvin swings right back into action on Monday, competing at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Kalamazoo Country Club.

Volleyball Defeats Saint Mary’s to Stretch MIAA Win Streak to 44 Matches

NOTRE DAME, IN - The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team improved to 14-0 overall and to 6-0 in the MIAA with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-16 victory at Saint Mary’s College Saturday afternoon.
Calvin hit .330 as a team in the win led by sophomore Maggie Kamp who tallied 12 kills and a .321 attack percentage. Junior Emily Crowe and freshman Laura Danhoff had six kills apiece. Senior setter Megan Rietema had 29 assists and 12 digs. Crowe and junior Stacey Kamp had three block assists each. Senior Kristen Zietse had 16 digs while junior Elise Biesboer had three service aces. Calvin has now won 44 consecutive MIAA regular season matches and is now 53-1 over its last 54 MIAA matches. Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Adrian at 6:30 p.m. inside Van Noord Arena.

Women’s Soccer Gets Back on Winning Track With 5-1 Win Over Albion

Calvin women’s soccer hosted the Britons of Albion Saturday afternoon. After a tough 0-0 tie at Saint Mary’s on Wednesday, the Knights were looking to get back into the win column. That is exactly what Calvin did, taking the early lead and not looking back en route to a 5-1 victory.  Sophomore Taylor TenHarmsel had a pair of goals for the Knights. Senior Heidi Scholten also had a goal and two assists. Calvin outshot Albion 26-6. Substitute keeper Emily Lawson made three saves in net while senior starter Ashton Hearn earned the win. The Knights are now 2-1-1 in the MIAA and 5-1-1 overall while Albion drops to 0-5 in conference and 2-6 overall. Calvin’s next contest is Tuesday when they will host the Bulldogs of Adrian at 4:00 pm.

Men’s Soccer Outlasts Weather Conditions at Bluffton to Pick up 5-0 Win

BLUFFTON, OH - The Calvin men’s soccer team found a way to outlast a torrential thunderstorm and a lengthy mid-game delay on Friday to record a 5-0 non-conference victory at Bluffton University. After 19 minutes of play, thunderstorms forced a two-hour weather delay. Undaunted, Calvin struck for three quick goals after the resumption of play to put the game away. Junior Travis Vegter scored three goals for his first collegiate hat-trick while sophomore Sam Hanover and senior Zach Willis also scored for the Knights. Hanover had a pair of assists as did sophomore Taylor Pruis. Junior Sean Broekhuizen had an assist in the win. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty had 12 saves for the Knights in recording the shutout win. Calvin will travel to Trine on September 25 for a conference match.

Men’s Golf Second at MIAA Jamboree - Van Noord Claims Medalist Honors

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men’s golf team had another solid afternoon, finishing second with a team score of 309 at the third MIAA Jamboree of the year. The MIAA Jamboree was hosted on Wednesday by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Hope took first place with a team score of 301 and with the performance, moved into first place in the overall team standings. The Flying Dutchmen hold a five stroke lead over Calvin and Adrian with the Knights and Bulldogs tied for second place in the overall team standings. Calvin junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had a superb afternoon on Wednesday as he claimed medalist honors with a first place score of 71. It marked the second time medalist performance of Van Noord’s career as he also achieved the feat once in 2012.  With his performance on Wednesday, Van Noord also takes over first place in the MIAA individual standings overall. . Calvin is back in action on Saturday, competing at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club at 1 p.m.
