Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Receive Weekly Honors Once Again From MIAA

Four Calvin fall sports athletes have received MIAA Athlete of the Week honors in their respective sports.  In men’s cross country, freshman Zac Nowicki is the MIAA Men’s Runner of the Week while Calvin senior Nicole Michmerhuizen is the MIAA women’s Runner of the Week. In men’s soccer, Calvin junior Travis Vegter is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week while in women’s soccer, Calvin sophomore Paige Capel is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week.

Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Kalamazoo - Moves Up in MIAA Standings

Looking to continue to make their way up the MIAA standings, the Calvin women’s soccer team traveled to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets on Saturday. Calvin, holding the fourth overall spot with 10 points heading into the match, trailed Adrian by two points while leading fifth-place Kalamazoo by just one point. Earning a 4-0 victory over Kalamazoo, Calvin moved into a tie for third place with Hope at 13 points apiece, while a victory by Adrian over Alma tied the Bulldogs and Scots atop the MIAA at 15 points each.Calvin moves to 7-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the MIAA while Kalamazoo drops to 4-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play. The Knights now look forward to Wednesday when they will host the Comets of Olivet for a 4 p.m. contest.

Men’s Soccer Tops Adrian 2-1 on Road - Win Streak Now at Four

ADRIAN - The Calvin men’s soccer team traveled to Adrian on Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the MIAA. Both teams entered the contest at 2-0 in conference play. The Knights were 1-0-3 at Adrian the past four years, but with a pair of first half goals and strong defense, Calvin claimed its second win in five years at Performance Stadium. Calvin is now 4-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play while Adrian drops 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the MIAA. The Knights will next be in action on Tuesday when they travel to Olivet to face the Comets, with the match starting at 4 p.m.

Men’s Golf Takes Over First Place in MIAA Overall Standings With MIAA Jamboree Effort

With two MIAA Jamborees left to play, the Calvin men’s golf team is in sole possession of first place in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights moved six strokes ahead of Hope in the overall standings by tying for first place at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine University on Saturday. Calvin tied hosted Trine for first place with a team score of 288 with Hope six strokes back in third at 294. Calvin and Hope entered the day tied for the lead in the MIAA overall standings. Calvin had three players finish in the top four individually on Saturday led by freshman Brad Smith (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) who carded a career-best score of 70 that was good for a tie for second place individually. Senior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) and senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) then tied for fourth individually with rounds of 71. Senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were also solid with Hoogstrate firing a round of 76 and Crow a round of 78.

Calvin Women’s Golf Take Third at MIAA Jamboree #2

KALAMAZOO - After two MIAA competitions, Calvin remains in third place in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights took third at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club on Saturday with a team score of 349. In doing so, the Knights remained ahead of rival Hope, widening the gap to 17 strokes as the Flying Dutch finished four strokes behind Calvin on Saturday with a fourth place team score of 353. Olivet continued to hold command of first place in the MIAA standings, taking first place on Saturday with a score of 321 while Saint Mary’s was second at 336. Olivet has a 27-stroke lead now over Saint Mary’s in the overall team standings.In Saturday’s round, Calvin was once again paced by senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) who tied for fourth individually with a round of 81. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) tied for 11th individually with a score of 86.
Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with an 89, sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) with a 93 and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) with a 100.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Claim First Place at MIAA Jamboree at Adrian

ADRIAN - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams raced to first place victories at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian on Saturday at the Lenawee Christian High School cross country course. In the women’s race, seventh-ranked Calvin took five of the top six spots for a first place score of 19 points, 21 points ahead of Hope. On the men’s side, 13th-ranked Calvin recorded 38 points, 17 points ahead of second place Hope. The Knights had the top finisher in both races as senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won the women’s race in 22:13 while freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) won the men’s race in 26:06. The MIAA Jamboree is worth one-third of the final MIAA title with the MIAA Championships making up the remaining portion. Calvin is back in action next Friday when it competes at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Volleyball Sweeps Adrian to Remain Unbeaten on Season

The Bulldogs of Adrian visited Van Noord Arena for a conference volleyball contest Wednesday evening against the #1 ranked Knights. The two teams entered the game on opposite ends of the standings, with Calvin holding a 6-0 conference record at 14-0 overall while Adrian was 0-6 in the MIAA and 4-10 overall. Calvin recorded a 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 victory. Maggie Kamp led Calvin with 15 kills at a blistering clip of .444. Junior Emily Crowe added six while Danhoff, senior Megan Rietema, and junior Stacey Kamp all chipped in five. Rietema totaled 28 assists while senior Kristen Zietse had 16 digs. Danhoff ended the match with seven service aces.

Calvin Men’s Soccer Win Streak at Three After 3-0 Win at Trine

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s soccer team stretched its win streak to three games with a 3-0 victory at Trine University Tuesday afternoon. Calvin (3-3-0 overall, 2-0-0 MIAA) took a 1-0 halftime lead on a first half goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) with junior Sean Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) picking up an assist on the play. The Knights then garnered a 2-0 advantage in the 53rd minute as freshman Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) tapped in a cross that was sent in by sophomore Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Vegter then scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year in 67th minute as he redirected a corner kick by freshman Matthew Koster (Pittsburgh, PA/Eden Christian Academy) into the net. Calvin finished with a 21-4 shots at goal advantage. Junior Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bishop Foley) picked up the shutout in goal for the Knights. Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Adrian for a 2:30 p.m. contest.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Continue to Hold Spots in National Polls

Division III Top 25 Rankings

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams continue to hold spots in the USTFCCCA Division III Top 25 rankings. In the men’s poll, Calvin is ranked 13th. On the women’s side, Calvin is ranked seventh. The Calvin men were ranked sixth last week while the Calvin women were ranked seventh. Both Calvin teams were idle last week and return to action on Saturday when they compete at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian. The women’s race is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s race to follow at noon.

Women’s Golf Third at Opening MIAA Jamboree

MARSHALL – The Calvin women’s golf team had a solid start to its MIAA fall campaign, placing third at the opening MIAA Jamboree with a team score of 347 strokes. Olivet took first with a team score of 329 with Saint Mary’s second at 341 followed by Calvin. Hope was fourth with a team score of 360. Tuesday’s tournament was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had a strong match for the Knights with a round of 80 which was good for second place individually.  Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had a stellar outing as well for Calvin, firing a round of 85 while sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 89.
