Women’s Golf Places Third at Adrian Invitational

ADRIAN - The Calvin women’s golf team took third in a field of eight teams at the Adrian Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Lenawee Country Club, posting a team score of 374 strokes.  St. Francis took first place with a team score of 354 strokes while Hope was second with a score of 370. Lourdes College was fourth with a team score of 378. Calvin’s top individual finisher was junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) with a 84. Canto tied for for first place but just missed medalist honors due to a tournament tiebreaker formula. Calvin will now prepare to compete at the Hope Invitational next Saturday at the Ravines Golf Club.

Softball Team Halts Losing Skid With 8-4 Win at Wheaton

WHEATON, IL – Calvin snapped a six-game losing skid with an 8-4 victory at Wheaton College Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 9-9 on the year. Earlier in the day, Calvin dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision to Robert Morris College of Chicago in a game played at Wheaton. In the win over Wheaton, sophomore pitcher Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) went all seven innings, scattering 14 hits. Calvin had nine hits and capitalized on three Wheaton errors. Brownlee also had two hits and scored three runs in the win. Freshman Ashley Riemersma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a pair of hits. Riemersma, sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) all drove in two runs apiece in the win. In the loss to Robert Morris, Calvin collected just two hits. Robert Morris (13-11) scored one run in the fifth and one run in the seventh.  Junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss in the pitchers’ circle for Calvin.Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Olivet in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

Baseball Completes Four-Game Series Sweep of Kalamazoo

Calvin completed a four-game series sweep of Kalamazoo on Saturday, defeating the Hornets 5-0 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 8-4 in the MIAA and 9-12 overall.In Saturday’s game one 5-0 win, Calvin scored two runs in the first and added three more in the fourth while junior Cory Laster (Ludington/Ludington HS) went the distance to pick up the shutout win. Laster struck out one and did not walk a batter while scattering four hits. Sophomore Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) drove in Calvin’s first run on a fielder’s choice and senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) later scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth, Cok belted a three-run homer to left. In game two, juniors Louis Hill Jr.  (Romulus/Romulus HS),  Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Grant VanderWall (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) combined to hold Kalamazoo to just one run. Hill (1-0) was credited with the win as he went the first four innings and allowed just two hits and one run. Calvin collected 12 hits including three off the bat of freshman Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Wohl, freshman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and junior Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian HS) all had two hits apiece. Spoelma drove in a pair of runs while freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) drove in three runs. Calvin will now prepare to host Adrian next Thursday in a twinbill at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.

Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by Adrian 16-2 in MIAA Opener

ADRIAN – The Calvin women’s lacrosse team dipped to 2-8 on the year and 0-1 in league play as the Knights dropped a 16-2 decision at Adrian Saturday afternoon. The game marked Calvin’s first-ever MIAA regular season game. Calvin trailed 13-1 at halftime. Adrian held a 31-5 shots at goal advantage.  Calvin’s goals were scored by sophomore Lisa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshman Cory Remy (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS). Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had seven saves in goal for the Knights. Calvin will host Albion next Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Men’s tennis continues to roll with 9-0 victory over Alma

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Coming off of the program’s first win over Kalamazoo College earlier this week, the Knights continued their winning ways defeating the Scots of Alma College 9-0 on a windy day at the Strikwerda tennis center.  Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) surrendered five games in the match at first singles, defeating junior Josh Grove 6-4, 6-1.  Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton) followed suit, winning at second and third singles.  Junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated Alma freshman Jared Guy 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles.  Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) dispatched junior Gordon Rumschlag 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles.  Sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Elmhurst) defeated Chad Barnhart 6-1, 6-0 at sixth singles.  The Knights won all three doubles flights - giving up one game first doubles, five games at second doubles and three games at third doubles.  Calvin, now 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA, returns to action Apr. 9 when it travels to Angola, IN, to face the Trine Thunder.  The match is slated to start at 4:00 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Adrian 18-1 in MIAA Opener

Playing in the first men’s varsity lacrosse MIAA game in Calvin history, the Knights fell to the Bulldogs of Adrian 18-1. While Calvin was able to match the Bulldogs early, the depth of Adrian’s bench became too much as the game progressed.Calvin is now 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Adrian moves to 6-3 and 1-0 in the MIAA. The Knights now look forward to next Wednesday when they will continue MIAA play at Albion College. The game against the Britons is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Softball Swept by Alma College

Calvin softball hosted the Scots of Alma on Friday afternoon for a pair of games at Gainey Field. The Scots came into the doubleheader undefeated in conference play while the Knights had yet to tally a win against an MIAA opponent. After the pair of games, the teams left the same way they had come in, with Alma remaining perfect in the MIAA and Calvin still seeking its first conference victory. Calvin dropped the opener 10-0 and the nightcap 9-1. The Knights drop to 8-8 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA while Alma is now 15-6 and 6-0 in conference play. Calvin travels to Wheaton tomorrow for non-conference games against host Wheaton and Robert Morris. The Knights resume MIAA-play next week Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Olivet.

Baseball Takes Two at Kalamazoo - Knights Use Long Ball to Cruise to Wins

KALAMAZOO - Calvin took both ends of a doubleheader at Kalamazoo on Friday, winning games by scores of 9-2 and 11-0. The Knights are now 7-11 overall and 6-4 in MIAA play. Calvin is scheduled to host Kalamazoo on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Calvin Field. In game one, Calvin took a 7-0 lead through three innings, scoring six in the second and one in the the third. Sophomore Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) provided the key blow in the second with a grand-slam homer - his first of his collegiate career. In the fourth, senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) blasted a two-run homer - his first of the year and the 10th of his collegiate career. Sophomore Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) picked up the win on the mound, going 5.1 innings and scattering eighth hits. Schepers is now 2-1 ont he year.  Sophomore Tom Bouwkamp (Pella/Pella Christian HS) came on in relieft to close out the win, tossing 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Sophomore Garrett Harder (Fenwich/West Michigan Lutheran HS) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also picked up two hits at the plate. In game two, sophomore Austin Juza (St. Joseph/Lake Michiga Catholic HS) tossed a one-hit shutout victory, striking out five and walking one. Juza is now 2-1 on the year. Cok had another big game, going 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and a pair of doubles. Lambers, sophomore Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) all had two hits apiece. Kraai had a double while VanPutten belted a two-run homer - his second of the year.

Softball Swept by Adrian at Gainey Field

The Calvin softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Adrian Thursday at the Gainey Athletic Complex, losing the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 5-2. Defensive miscues cost Calvin in game one as the Knights committed six errors that led to five unearned runs. Calvin outhit Adrian (6-10, 2-0 MIAA) 7-6 but could not come up with enough timely hits to keep pace with the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Calvin took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run RBI double to right by junior Lina Avila but Adrian countered with a run in the third and four in the fifth to build a 5-2 lead. Calvin came back with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth but Adrian answered with three in the top of the sixth to regain command. Sophomore Trista Brownlee had two of Calvin’s seven hits. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer also had a triple and scored a run. Avila took the loss for Calvin in the circle, allowing six hits in seven innings of work. In game two, Adrian jumped out to an early lead again, scoring four in the second. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the fourth. Calvin (8-6 overall, 0-2 MIAA) scored single runs in the third and seventh. Both teams had six hits and committed two errors. Adrian reaped the benefits of five walks by the Calvin pitching staff however. Junior Caitlin Callow took the loss for Calvin. VanderMeer went 2-for-4 for the Knights with an RBI. Freshman Lydia Gildea had a triple and and RBI while freshman Ashley Riemersma had a double.Calvin will host Alma on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a doubleheader at Gainey Field.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Continue To Hold National Rankings

USTFCCCA Division III Top 25 Rankings

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams continue to hold spots in the latest set of Division III National Rankings conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.The Calvin men’s team is ranked 24th while the Calvin women’s team is ranked 16th. Both Calvin teams are at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing this weekend on the campus of Michigan State University.
