Women’s Tennis Gains MIAA Tournament Berth - To Travel to Hope Next Thursday for Semis

Although the Calvin women’s tennis team was idle on Saturday, the Knights gained a berth into the four-team MIAA Tournament next week. The Knights were the recipient of a Kalamazoo victory over Saint Mary’s that allowed Calvin to finish in a tie for fourth place in the final MIAA women’s tennis standings with Saint Mary’s. Calvin gains the fourth and final spot for the MIAA Tournament however as the Knights defeated Saint Mary’s 5-4 earlier this week to gain the head-to-head tie-breaker edge. Calvin will travel to top-seeded Hope for a semifinal match next Thursday at 4 p.m.

Men’s Tennis Competes at MIAA Flighted Tournament Hosted by Hope

HOLLAND - Calvin concluded play at the two-day MIAA Flighted Tournament at Hope College. The competition was unscored. Calvin’s top singles finish came in the “C” singles flight with junior John Strikwerda taking third place with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nick Ihrie of Trine. In doubles competition, Calvin’s “B” doubles team of senior Jarrod Brower and Strikwerda took home the title with an 8-3 win over a tandem from Alma.  Seniors Preston Phillips and Philip Reinken also combined for a third place finish in the “A” doubles competition. Calvin will now prepare to compete in the MIAA Tournament semifinals next Thursday when it hosts rival Hope at 4 p.m. at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Men’s Lacrosse Drops MIAA Finale to Olivet 20-7 - Will Host Elmhurst Monday

The Knights hosted Olivet at Zuidema Field on Saturday for each team’s final MIAA contest. Unfortunately for Calvin, Olivet opened the game with an 8-0 run and the Knights could not recover as the Comets coasted to a 20-7 victory. Freshman D.J. VanderBaan led the Knights on offense with four goals while Tim Marco scored a goal and added two assists.The Knights now look forward to the final game of their regular season Monday night. Calvin will host Elmhurst in a non-conference matchup, with the game scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Women’s Lacrosse Concludes Season With 10-1 Victory Over Olivet

The Calvin women’s lacrosse team hosted the Comets of Olivet on Saturday afternoon, which also happened to be Calvin’s final regular season game and senior day for the Knights. The first senior class of women’s varsity lacrosse is attacker Nicole Perragaux, midfielder Yelena Davis, and goalkeeper Lauren Spoelstra. The Knights were able to win on senior day, building a 4-0 lead by halftime en route to a 10-1 victory. Slaughter led the Knights with two goals and an assist. Perragux chipped in two goals while Holwerda added one goal and an assist. In goal, Lauren Spoelstra made five saves to earn the win.The win ends the inaugural Calvin women’s lacrosse varsity season. Calvin’s final record is 4-12 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA, tied for fourth in conference. Olivet drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference.

Softball Concludes Season With Doubleheader Split at Hope - Finishes Sixth in Final League Standings

HOLLAND - Calvin concluded its 2013 campaign with a doubleheader split at Hope Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 12-7 and coming back to win the nightcap 4-3 in nine innings. The Knights conclude the season with an overall mark of 17-13 and a conference slate of 8-8 - good for sixth place. In game one, Junior Lina Avila took the loss to fall to 7-6 on the year. Avila also had a two-run homer - her sixth of the year and 25th of her career. Calvin had eight hits with sophomore Christie VanderMeer and Avila picking up two hits apiece. In game two, Calvin took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning but Hope rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the inning to send the game into extra innings.  Calvin broke through for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as it loaded the bases and then scored with one out as freshman Megan Rozeveld was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run. Sophomore Trista Brownlee went all nine innings for Calvin to earn the win as she struck out four and scattered nine hits. VanderMeer, Brownlee, Gildea, Rozeveld and freshman Ashley Riemersma all had two hits apiece for the Knights.

Baseball Sweeps Twinbill at Albion - Moves Closer to MIAA Tournament Berth

ALBION – Calvin moved closer to securing a berth in the upcoming four-team MIAA Tournament with a doubleheader sweep at Albion Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 18-0 and 5-2. Calvin is now 15-18 overall and more importantly 14-9 in the MIAA. The Knights are in firm control of fourth place in the league standings and within striking distance of third place Trine. In Saturday’s opener, Calvin exploded for 19 hits while sophomore Nate Schepers and Ben Guilfoyle combined on the shutout with Schepers picking up his third victory of the year. Freshman Jalen Bouma went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in while sophomore Ben Wohl also had three hits. Collecting two hits apiece for the Knights were senior Tyler Tos, sophomore Grant VanPutten and freshman J.R. Frederick. In game two, junior Cory Laster went the distance to pick up his third win of the year. Laster struck out one and scattered five hits. Calvin struck for four runs in the second inning and added a single run in the third to build a five-run cushion. Albion scored two runs in bottom of the seventh before Laster ended the comeback attempt. Wohl had two of Calvin’s eight hits while freshman Travis Kraai drove in a pair of runs. Calvin will travel to Cornerstone on Monday for a 3 p.m. game.

Men’s golf wins MIAA NCAA Spring Qualifier - earns trip to nationals

CASCADE, MI - The Calvin men’s golf team captured the MIAA NCAA Spring Qualifier Sat. afternoon.  The tournament consisted of three rounds, two of which were played at Watermark Country Club.  The Knights finished with a three round score of 956, five strokes better than second place finisher Adrian.  Coming into the final round, Calvin had an eight-stroke lead on second place Trine.  The Knights shot a team score of 323 on the afternoon, good for third place.  Calvin struggled as a team for most of the day, but did just enough to gain the MIAA’s automatic qualification into the national tournament.  Despite the tough conditions, senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) shot the low round of the day (76) and was named the medalist of the round.  Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens) finished in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 79 apiece.  Calvin earns its second trip to the national tournament in the last three seasons.  The Knights will play for a national championship in Destin, Fla., from May 17-21.

Michmerhuizen Shatters 10,000 Meter Record - Calvin Distance Crew Runs Wild at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE - A group of Calvin College distance runners once again ran wild at the Hillsdale Gina Relays. The meet has often been a mecca for big performances for Calvin’s distance crew and Friday night proved to be no different.Junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) highlighted the evening with a remarkable performance in the 10,000 meters. Michmerhuizen won the race with a meet and Calvin record time of 34:09.96. The time broke the previous Hillsdale Gina Relays women’s 10K record of 34:41.61 set by Eastern Michigan’s Julie Watson in 1987. It also broke the previous Calvin record of 35:44.36 set by Christina Overbeck in 2007. In addition, the time is the seventh-fastest in Division III women’s track and field history. Michmerhuizen’s performance was one of several standout performances for the Maroon and Gold on Friday.

Women’s Golf Take Fourth at MIAA Spring Qualifier #2

MARSHALL - The second MIAA Spring qualifier for women’s golf was held on Friday at the Medalist Golf Club with Olivet College serving as host. Olivet used home course advantage to its advantage with a first place and course record total of 319 strokes to widen its overall MIAA spring tournament lead. Calvin was fourth on Friday with a team score of 367 and remains in fourth place in the overall MIAA spring standings. Calvin’s top golfer on Friday was junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS with an 86 that was good for sixth place individually. Freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) was next for the Knights with a round of 90 while freshman Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had a 95. Senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) had rounds of 96. The final MIAA Spring qualifier tournament will be held on Saturday at the Medalist Golf Club with tee times set for 12:30 p.m. The team holding first place in the overall standings at the conclusion of Saturday’s competition will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Baseball splits twinbill with Albion

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Looking to solidify its hold on a top four spot in the conference, the Calvin College baseball team hosted the Britons of Albion College Fri. afternoon for the first half of a home-and-home MIAA series, with the second pair of games to be played at Albion on Saturday. Calvin entered the day with an 11-8 record in MIAA play - good for fourth place, while Albion was sixth at 9-11. Hoping to still jump into the tournament picture, Albion stole game one 4-0. Calvin then won a thriller in game two, twice coming from behind and then winning on a walk-off single from Jalen Bouma in extra innings to win 6-5. With the doubleheader split, Calvin moves to 13-18 overall and 12-9 in conference while Albion is now 11-19 and 10-12 in the MIAA.  Calvin returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Albion for another twinbill, with first-pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
