Carissa Verkaik Named State Farm Division III All-American/Finalist for Player of Year by WBCA

For the second consecutive year, Carissa Verkaik has been named a Division III State Farm All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. In addition, Verkaik has been named one of three finalists for the State Farm/WBCA Division III Player of the Year Award. The other two finalists are Sam Barber of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Kate Nielson of Simpson College. State Farm and the WBCA present the player of the year award annually to the top player in each of five WBCA membership divisions (NCAA Divisions II, III, NAIA, junior/community college and high school), while the State Farm Wade Trophy is presented annually to the NCAA Division I player of the year. The winners will be announced during the third annual WBCA Awards Show on Monday, April 8, in New Orleans. This event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women’s Final Four®.

Men’s Tennis Defeats Cornerstone 7-2 in Season Opener

Calvin opened its season with a 7-2 non-conference victory over visiting Cornerstone University Wednesday afternoon at Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin swept the three doubles flights and then took four of the six singles flights to close out the win. In doubles action, seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Philip Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS), picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) were 8-4 winners at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, DeMaagd was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles with Phillips winning 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Reinken then picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles while Peterson held a 1-0 lead in sets when his opponent defaulted at No. 4 singles. Calvin is back in action this Friday when it hosts Grand Rapids Community College at 4 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse Drops 18-5 Decision to Hope in Non-Conference Game

The first meeting of the Rivalry in men’s varsity lacrosse took place Wednesday evening at Davenport’s Turf Field. Hope opened up the game with six unanswered goals before the Knights first scored. The Flying Dutchmen continued to pull away on their way to an 18-5 victory.  Calvin now looks forward to next week Wednesday when it will travel to Augustana to face the Vikings with face-off scheduled 7 p.m. central time.

Vande Streek Named D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Coach of Year - Powell and Snikkers Also Honored

Two members of the Calvin men’s basketball team have received D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region honors while head coach Kevin Vande Streek has been named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region men’s basketball coach of the year. Senior Tom Snikkers has been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team while senior Bryan Powell has been named to the third team. Now in his 17th year at the helm of the Calvin men’s basketball program, Vande Streek has led Calvin to a 26-3 record heading into a Sweet 16 NCAA III Tournament game at St. Thomas this weekend.  Earlier this year, he led Calvin to its third MIAA regular season title since 2006 and its first MIAA Tournament crown since 2007. Calvin has also reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time under his watch and has notched the most wins since the 2004-05 season when it recorded a 27-7 record.  Calvin is making its third strip to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA III Tournament under his guidance. At Calvin, he has posted a record of 334-139. Overall as a head coach, he is 426-219.

Carissa Verkaik Named D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year

For the third straight year, Calvin College senior Carissa Verkaik has been named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, she has also been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team for the fourth straight year. She was recently named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for the fourth straight year. She averaged 20.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game. She completed her career as Calvin’s all-time leader in points (2,236), rebounds (1,071) and blocked shots (440). She is now currently ranked third on the all-time NCAA III women’s basketball list in blocked shots and 14th in points.

Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Alma 12-3 in Non-Conference Match

CALEDONIA - On an evening filled with snowflakes, the Calvin women’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-3 decision to Alma College at Davenport University’s Turf Field. Although the team was between two MIAA schools, it was an early non-conference game as the league season will not start for Calvin until April. Alma (5-1) led 8-0 at halftime, scoring five goals in a four-and-a-half minute flurry in the first half to take control. Calvin (0-3) later came back with three unanswered goals to close to within 10-3 in the second half but the Scots scored the final two tallies to seal the win. Senior Katie Pranger (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year while senior Nicole Perregaux (Upton, MA/Nipmuc Regional) scored off a feed from freshman Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS) while sophomore Nikita Blaauwendraat (Princeport, Novia Scotia/Cobequid Educational Centre) scored unassisted.

Women’s Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision to Aquinas College

Calvin dropped a hard-fought 5-4 non-conference decision to Aquinas Tuesday afternoon at the Riverview Racquet Club. The Knights are now 2-3 on the year. Aquinas took a 2-1 lead through doubles play, winning 8-6 decisions at No. 1 and No.3 doubles while Calvin’s No. 2 doubles tandem of seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) claimed an 8-4 victory. Calvin’s singles points came from sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) at No. 1 singles, junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) at No. 4 singles and sophomore Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) at No. 5 singles. Calvin is back in action on March 18 when it takes on the University of Puget Sound in Orlando, Florida. The match will be the first for Calvin on its spring break trip.

Calvin Fan Bus Information for NCAA III Tournament Trip to St. Thomas

Knights Fans,

We’re trying to bring a home court advantage to St. Thomas with a fan bus! The Tommies (ranked #1) will have good fan support. Show your Maroon and Gold spirit by coming to the game with us! Your costs will include a bus ride to the game, a ticket, pizza reception post-game and hotel.

Here’s the breakdown:
-$82 per person for the bus ride
-Cost of the game ticket
-$100 for a hotel room (multiple people can stay in a room). We will stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Woodbury (off of I-94 about 20 minutes east of St. Thomas).

-FREE post-game pizza reception

The bus will stop for other meals. You will be responsible for these costs.

The bus will leave at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning and is schedule to return to campus on Sunday at 5 p.m.

*Please note that in order for the bus run we need it full. Our deadline is Thursday at noon! If it is not full, we will have to cancel. If you’re interested please call the alumni office at 616-526-6142.

Calvin Holds MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings Lead

Calvin College holds the lead in the latest set of MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings as well as in the standings for the MIAA Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Awards. Calvin has a first place total of 147 points in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings with Hope second with 126 points. In the men’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 68 points with Hope second with 56 points. In the women’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 79 points with Hope second with 70 points. This year, Calvin has captured nine MIAA regular season championships, winning league titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming and diving.
