Relay Finds All-America Finish - Klaasen Honorable Mention All-American in Diving at NCAAs

SHENANDOAH, TX - Calvin’s 200 medley relay team struck home for an All-America berth on the first day of competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships, finishing eighth with a time of 1:46.02.  Calvin qualified for the evening finals with a school record time of 1:45.16 in the morning prelims. Calvin’s relay consisted of senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS), senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA/Home Schooled) and freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS). The finish marks Calvin’s first All-America relay since 2009 and its first in the 200 medley since 2007. Meanwhile, senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took home an honorable mention All-America berth in the women’s three-meter diving with a score of 456.75 points that was good for 10th place. With the relay finish and Klaasen’s diving performance, Calvin is in 10th place with 29 points through the first day of competition.

Women’s Basketball Team Claims NCAA III Statistics Titles - Finishes Ranked in Final Top 25 Polls

The final NCAA III statistics for women’s basketball are in the books and Calvin has come out on top in two team statistical categories. Calvin finished as the national leader in field goal percentage, connecting on 46.5 percent of its field goal attempts throughout the year. The Knights also led the nation in assists per-game, averaging 18.4 assists-per-contest. Calvin also finished fifth in blocked shots per-game (6.4), sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.12) and seventh in scoring margin (23.3). Individually, senior Carissa Verkaik finished fifth nationally in field goal percentage (.580) and sixth in blocked shots per-game (3.33). In addition, the two final national polls have come out and Calvin is ranked 12th in one national poll and 14th in another. Calvin is ranked 12th in the final WBCA Division III Coaches poll of the year and 14th in the final D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

Men’s tennis defeats Lawrence University 6-3

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to .500 on its spring break trip by defeated Lawrence University (WI) Tues., March 19.  Calvin won two of the three doubles flights, and won four of six singles flights to win the match.  Jason Dunn and Max Zlevor defeated Calvin seniors Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) and Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley) 8-5 for the Vikings’ lone doubles point at first doubles.  Senior Brian Demaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) dispatched Cooper Smith and Jeremy Andererck 8-2 at second doubles.  Former Holland Christian standouts senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/.Holland Christian) pulled out a 9-8(5) victory over Craig Sherwood and Brian DeCorte at third doubles.  Calvin won the top two singles flights.  DeMaagd defeated Smith 6-1, 6-1 at first singles while Phillips outlasted Dunn 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at second singles.  Peterson and Brower won at fourth and fifith singles without surrendering more than two games in a set.  Calvin’s spring break trip continues Thurs., March 21, when the Knights take on Knox College (IL).

Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by Randolph-Macon 18-5

ASHLAND, VA - Calvin suffered an 18-5 loss to Randolph-Macon College Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 1-5 on the year while Randolph-Macon improves to 5-1. Calvin trailed 12-2 at halftime and could not mount a comeback in the second half. Senior Katie Pranger (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) led the Calvin attack with three goals - boosting her season total to 13. Junior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also scored goals for the Knights.Pranger and senior goalie Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) scooped up four ground balls apiece. Spoelstra also had six saves in goal. Randolph-Macon outshot Calvin 29-13 in the game. Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it travels to St. Vincent (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. non-conference match.

Softball Splits Tuesday Games in Florida - Now 4-2 on Season

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split a pair of softball games on Tuesday, falling to Bowdoin 6-2 and defeating Framingham State 9-1 in five innings.In the loss to Bowdoin, Calvin (4-2) fell behind 4-0 after four innings but came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bowdoin then scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) belted her second home run of the spring but Calvin mustered only four hits in the loss. Junior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutherans HS) split time in the circle for the Knights in relief of Callow. In the win over Framingham State, Calvin scored once in the third, five times in the fourth and three times in the fifth. Avila hit another home run in the win as did junior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS). Sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) had two hits and two runs batted in as did freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS). Junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon-Reeths Puffer HS) and freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) also had two hits apiece. Calvin will face Manchester and Benedictine in single games on Wednesday.

Avila got the victory in the pitching circle, striking out two and allowing just three hits. Avila is now 3-0 on the year.

Women’s tennis drops two during first day of spring trip

ORLANDO, FL – The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped its first two contests of the spring break trip, falling 6-3 to Puget Sound (OR) and 5-4 to Otterbein (OH). In the match against the Loggers of Puget Sound, the Knights fell behind early, losing all three doubles flights.  Maddie Thiese and Allison Embernate defeated sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) 9-7 at first doubles.  Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman defeated seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) 8-2 at second doubles.  Jenna Gersen and Josie Dow defeated sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) 8-6 in the third doubles flight.  Calvin split the six singles flights, winning first, third and fifth singles.  Visser defeated Thiese 6-3, 6-2 at first singles.  Roode pulled out a three set victory, defeating Thompson 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 at third singles.  Reitsma defeated Dow 6-1, 7-5 at fifth singles.  Doezema came close to defeating Embernate at sixth singles, but fell in three sets by scores of 5-7. 7-5, 10-3.  In the matchup against Otterbein, Calvin fell behind 2-1 after the doubles.  Julie Stroyne and Sammi Kruger defeated Visser and Zoerhof 8-3 at first doubles.  Emma Krummel and Adrien Leatherwood defeated the Calvin duo of Ipema and Doezema 8-6.  The Knights’ lone win in doubles came from Roode and Reitsma defeating Kelsey Leachko and Emily Harper 8-2.  Calvin split the six singles flights.  Roode defeated Alana Cheplowitz 6-1, 6-4 at third singles.  Zoerhof defeated Krummel 7-6(0), 6-2 at fourth singles.  Doezema defeated Leadko 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles.  Calvin continues its spring break trip Mar. 20, when it faces Hamilton.

Calvin Softball Falls in Extra-Innings to Trinity (CT) - Defeats Gallaudet in Mercy-Rule Win

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split its Monday games in Florida, dropping an 8-5 decision in 10 innings to Trinity of Connecticut before coming back to defeat Gallaudet University 15-1 in five innings. The Knights are now 3-1 on the young season. Calvin has games scheduled against Bowdoin and Framingham State scheduled for Tuesday.

Women’s Golf Edged by Nebraska Wesleyan in Non-Conference Dual Match in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Calvin women’s golf team was in dual match action against Nebraska Wesleyan Monday morning at the Royal St. Cloud Links Golf Course. Nebraska Wesleyan edged Calvin by four strokes, finishing at 378 while Calvin was at 382. Calvin freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) was the match medalist with a score of 87 while junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had a 94 and freshman Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt Hs) a 96. Senior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) had 105 and freshman Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) a 106. Freshman Shara Reynolds (Adrian/Adrian HS) served as an alternate and posted a score of 110. Calvin will next compete at the Adrian Invitational on April 6.

Carissa Verkaik Repeats as Women’s DIII News Player of the Year

BEAVERTON, ORre. — Calvin College senior center Carissa Verkaik has been named the 2013 Women’s DIII News Player of the Year. It’s the second straight season she has earned the honor. Verkaik led the Knights to a 23-4 overall record and a bid in the NCAA tournament. She averaged 20 points and 9.2 rebounds and shot 58 percent from the floor. Her season highs included a 37-point performance against Adrian and 17 rebounds in a win over Thomas More. She was named Player of the Year in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the fourth straight season. Verkaik headlines the 2013 WDIIIN All-American team, where she was joined on the first team by Sam Barber of Wisconsin Stevens Point, Sarah Collins of Babson, Jill Woerner from Catholic University and Simpson’s Kate Nielsen. WDIIIN has named a Player of the Year every season since 1994. This past weekend, Verkaik was named the D3hoops.com Player of the Year and recipient of the prestigious Jostens Trophy.

Vande Streek Named NABC Great Lakes District Co-Coach of Year - Snikkers Named to All-District Team

Calvin College men’s basketball coach has landed another post-season honor as has Calvin senior Tom Snikkers. Vande Streek has been named the Division III Great Lakes Co-District Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Meanwhile, Snikkers has been named to the Great Lakes Region All-District second team. This year, Vande Streek led Calvin to its third MIAA regular season title in five years and its first MIAA Tournament crown since 2007. He also led Calvin to its first NCAA III Tournament berth since 2007 as the Knights advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin concluded the year with an overall record of 26-4. A senior forward, Snikkers hails from Jenison and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. This year Snikkers averaged 13.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game while connecting on 45.7 percent of his field goal attempts. He was a first team All-MIAA selection for the third straight year and was named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region team.
