ANGOLA, IN - Calvin split a doubleheader at Trine Wednesday afternoon, dropping the opener 9-4 before coming back to win the nightcap 4-3. Wednesday’s game marked the MIAA opener for both teams.In the opener, Calvin committed five errors and junior Jeff Victor took the hard-luck loss on the mound. In game two, junior Grant VanderWall got the win while freshman Jalen Bouma got the save. Senior Ben Cok and freshman Travis Kraai both collected two hits apiece for Calvin as did freshman Tyler Lambers who got the start at first base in both games for the Knights.Calvin is back in action on Friday when it travels to Olivet for a 2 p.m. twinbill.

Joe Broekhuizen, who recently completed his four-year Calvin soccer career, has accepted a contract to play professional soccer for the Dayton Dutch Lions - a team in the United Soccer Pro League (USL). Broekhuizen will finish his sports management degree at Calvin through distant correspondence. Through the help of Calvin head men’s soccer coach Ryan Souders, his family, his teammates, his professors and most importantly the Lord, Broekhuizen graciously accepts the opportunity. His first scrimmage as a member of the Dutch Lions is scheduled for Tues., Apr. 2, against Ohio State.

The first set of Division III national rankings for outdoor track and field have been released and both the Calvin men’s and women’s teams are nationally-ranked. In the first national poll released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association, the Calvin women’s team is ranked 15th while the Calvin men’s team is ranked 18th. Both Calvin teams are scheduled to compete at the Grand Rapids Open on Saturday at Houseman Field.

Calvin College senior Tom Snikkers has added one more honor to his list of post-season awards. Snikkers has been named a honorable mention All-American by Division III News. Earlier this year, he was named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team as well as to the NABC Great Lakes All-District second team. In addition, he was named to the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year. A senior forward, Snikkers hails from Jenison and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. This year Snikkers averaged 13.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game while connecting on 45.7 percent of his field goal attempts. He was a first team All-MIAA selection for the third straight year and was named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region team. Snikkers finished his career with 1,464 points - good for eighth place on the Calvin all-time scoring list in men’s basketball.

ALBION, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team opened up conference play with an 8-1 loss at Albion. The Knights fell behind 3-0 after doubles, and were able to win one singles flight. In doubles, Irene Chen (Shenzen, China/Apple Valley) and Marissa Cloutier (Grosse Ile/Grosse Ile HS) defeated sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and senior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) 8-1 at first doubles. Margaux Kabodian (Novi/Mercy) and Heather Vogt (Saline/Saline HS) defeated seniors Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) 8-3 at second doubles. Katie Blumberg (Farmington Hills/Farmington) and Leah Saurman (Kentwood/East Kentwood) defeated sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) 8-5 at third doubles. Calvin got its lone point of the match at fifth singles. Doezema defeated Marissa Messenger (East Lansing/East Lansing HS) 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. All other flights ended in two sets, but some were close Briton victories. Blumberg defeated Roode 6-2, 6-4 at third singles. Heather Vogt (Saline/Saline HS) defeated Zoerhof 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles. Calvin, now 2-9, 0-1 MIAA on the season, will return to action Sat., Mar. 30, when it takes on the Flying Dutch of Hope College. The match is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its Athletes of the Week in track and field through March 24. Calvin’s Erik Holstege (men) has been named the MIAA’s Track Athlete of the Week. Holstege, a freshman from Keswick, Va. (Monticello HS), posted a strong performance against a largely Division I field at the Weems Baskin Invitational at the University of South Carolina, finishing eighth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles in :15.93. He also had a leap of 20 feet, 5 inches in the long jump. Holstege is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time.

COLUMBIA, SC - The Calvin men’s and women’s track teams concluded action at the Weems Baskin Inviational hosted by the University of South Carolina.On the women’s side, junior Julie Busscher had a solid day in the sprints, clocking a time of 12.83 in the 100 meters and 26.51 in the 200 meters. Sophomore Kelley Tuinenga later had a solid time of 1:08.64 in the 400 meter hurdles and then posted a jump of 5-1 in the high jump.
Sophomore Christina Geating then went 10-6 in the pole vault.On the men’s side, sophomore Erik Holstege had a strong performance in the 110 high hurdles, clocking in with a time of 15.93 while also jumping 20-5 in the long jump. Sophomore Calvin Kuyers also performed well in the 400 meter hurdles, recording a time of 56.70. Freshman Jon Cok later posted a mark of 6-4 3/4 in the high jump. Both teams will now prepare to compete at the Grand Rapids Open next Saturday at Houseman Field.

Latrobe, Pa. - The Calvin women’s lacrosse team dipped to 1-6 on the year with a 20-8 loss at St. Vincent College Saturday afternoon. Calvin trailed 12-3 at halftime and was outscored 8-5 in the second half. St. Vincent held a 42-24 shots at goal advantage including 26-9 in the first half. Senior Katie Pranger (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) led Calvin offensively with four goals to bring her team-leading total to 17. Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS) also had three goals while sophomore Nikita Blaauwendraat (Princeport, Nova Scotia/Coequid Educational Centre) had one goal. Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had 15 saves in nets for the Knights. Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to cross-town rival Aquinas for a non-conference match scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

SHENANDOAH, TX - Calvin College senior Elizabeth Counsell capped off her stellar four-year collegiate career with yet another All-America performance and a school record Saturday night at the NCAA III Championships. Competing in her final collegiate event, Counsell took fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:16.45. Seeded 17th heading into Saturday’s prelims, Counsell ripped off the sixth-fastest time of the morning, recording a school record time of 2:17.81. The time was nearly two seconds faster than her previous school record of 2:19.56. Counsell then found another gear in Saturday’s final to move up one more place and drop another second from her school record set just a few hours earlier. Counsell concludes her Calvin swimming career as a four-time NCAA III All-American, having finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the 2010 national meet and then placing second in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 breast at this week’s national meet while also swimming on Calvin’s eighth place 200 medley relay team this past Wednesday. Counsell’s All-America performance Saturday helped Calvin finish 13th in the final team standings with 82 points.
