Calvin Track and Field Teams Perform Well at Grand Rapids Open

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the (non-scoring) Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College at Houseman Field Saturday afternoon. Several of the events that were held were non-traditional. One of those events was the 300 meter dash. On the women’s side, junior Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) took first place in a time of 41.98. Busscher was one of several winners for the Calvin women’s team. Other winners for the Calvin women included junior Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) in the 1,000 meter run (3:04.22), freshman McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) in the 3,000 meter run (10:30.22), sophomore Christina Geating (Abington, PA/Abington HS) in the high jump (5-1), junior Lauren Madden (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) in the javelin (120-5) and junior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) in the triple jump (35-7 1/4).  On the men’s side, Calvin received first place performances from senior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesbug HS) in the 1,000 meters (2:31.37), sophomore Calvin Kuyers (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) in the 300 meter hurdles (39.06) and senior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) in the shot put (50-6 1/4). Junior Ben deWaal Malefyt (Midland Park, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) also had a notable performance in the discus, tossing a career-best mark of 160-3 with Meckes close behind at 154-3. Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete at the Spartan Invitational next Saturday on the campus of Michigan State University.

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Beloit 16-8 in Home Opener at Zuidema Field

Calvin men’s lacrosse hosted the Buccaneers of Beloit College Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field. A strong first three quarters saw the Knights in a position to make a run at the game late, but Beloit played strong defense in the fourth and increased their lead en route to a 16-8 victory over Calvin. Calvin is now 1-7 on the year, while Beloit moves to 3-6. The Knights now look forward to next week Saturday when they will host the Bulldogs of Adrian for their first varsity lacrosse MIAA contest. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m.

Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Olivet - Splits Weekend Series Wtih Comets

Fighting through injuries and illness, the Calvin baseball team found a way to gain a doubleheader split against Olivet on Saturday and in the process a split of the four-game weekend series with the Comets. Calvin opened Saturday’s twinbill with a 4-2 loss but came back to defeat the Comets 4-3 in game two. The Knights are now 3-3 in MIAA play heading into a Tuesday makeup doubleheader against Trine scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field. Sophomore Jeremy Kamp took the loss in game one. Sophomore Nate Schepers claimed the win in game two in a relief role with junior Jeff Victor picking up a save. Jordan VanderWall went 3-for-3 in game two while sophomore Grant VanPutten had a double and a triple. Freshman Jalen Bouma also had three hits in the twinbill.

Men’s tennis rolls to 9-0 victory versus Lakeland

OSHKOSH, WI – The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to 2-0 on the weekend and 6-2 overall with a 9-0 win over Lakeland College.  At first doubles, seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) defeated sophomore Paul Elzinga (Howards Grove, WI/Howards Grove HS) and freshmen William Yelverton (Oconomowac, WI/Oconomowac HS) 8-1.  Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated freshmen Greg Bokventiz (St. Francis, WI/St. Francis HS) and sophomore Jake Halverson (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) 8-1 at second doubles.  Former Holland Christian teammates senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) defeated senior Brandon Robinson (Burlington, WI/Westosha Central) and sophomore Chris Meyer (Neenah, WI/Neenah HS) 8-0 at third doubles.  Calvin needed just three singles flights to win the match.  The Knights did that and more, winning all six singles flights.  The top three singles flights, won by DeMaagd, Phillips and Reinken respectively, all won the first set 6-0.  Each of the three seniors gave up a single game in the second set - winning each by a score of 6-1.  Peterson defeated Yelverton 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles.  Brower and sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) won at fifth and sixth singles respectively without losing a game.  Calvin will start the MIAA portion of its schedule Apr. 3, when it faces Kalamazoo.  The Knights are looking for their first victory against the Hornets in program history.

Calvin women’s tennis defeated by Hope 9-0

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team suffered its second conference defeat Sat. afternoon, falling to rival Hope 9-0 at Strikwerda Tennis Center.  The Knights lost each flight, and fall to 0-2 in the MIAA and 2-10 on the season.  The Flying Dutch got out to an early lead, and won all three doubles flights.  Former Hudsonville teammates Leah LaBarge and Carli Capestany defeated junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) 8-2 at first doubles.  Melissa Bieri (Holland/Holland Christian) and Anna Garcia (Battle Creek/Lakeview) defeated Calvin seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) 8-3 at second doubles.  Andrea Pickelman (Marshall/Marshall HS) and Stephanie Huffman (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) defeated sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) 8-4 at third doubles.  The Knights were unable to win any singles flights.  Visser kept the first set close with Capestany, but eventually fell 6-4, 6-0.  Roode, Doezema and Courtney Selvius (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) each fell 6-3 in the first set of the third, fifth and sixth singles flights respectively.  Calvin returns to action Apr. 2 when it travels to Alma to face the Scots at 4:00 p.m.

Baseball Gains Doubleheader Split at Olivet - To Host Comets on Saturday

OLIVET – Calvin gained yet another MIAA doubleheader split on the road Friday afternoon, defeating Olivet 11-3 in the second game of a doubleheader after falling 4-2 in game one. In the opener, Calvin (3-10 overall, 2-2 MIAA) fell behind 4-0 but came back late, scoring two runs in the sixth before falling just short. Sophomore Garrett Harder had a two-run RBI single in the sixth inning as the Knights outhit the Comets 7-6. Junior Cory Laster (0-2) took the loss as he struck out five without a walk in six innings of work. In game two, Calvin broke open a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fourth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away for the win. Sophomore Austin Juza picked up his first collegiate win, going five innings and scattering seven hits. Junior Grant VanderWall came on in relief to toss two shutout innings of relief, lowering his season earned run average to 3.38.The two teams will play again on Saturday at Calvin in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The twinbill will feature a live audio broadcast through the Calvin website at: Stretch Internet Audio Broadcast

Softball Team Splits With Trinity Christian College

CALEDONIA - The Calvin softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Trinity Christian College Friday afternoon at the Davenport University Athletic Complex. Calvin won the opener 7-3 but dropped the nightcap 13-2. Calvin is now 8-4 on the season. In the opener, sophomore Trista Brownlee got the win in relief as the Knights rallied for five runs in the sixth to take the lead. In game two, junior Lina Avila took the loss as the Trolls scored four runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to close out the win. Calvin is back in action next Tuesday, hosting Alma at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

Men’s tennis routs Ripon 9-0

OSHKOSH, WI - The Calvin men’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Ripon College Fri. evening in a match played at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.  The Knights improve to 5-2 on the season.  Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton) defeated Eric Seiler and Connor Greenwald 8-2 at first doubles.  Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) defeated Ryan Slowinski and Brian Schumaker 8-2 at second doubles.  Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore John Strikwerda defeated Tyler Hopewell and Anders Goodwin 8-0 at third doubles.  Three of the six singles flights were won without losing a game.  Reinken defeated Slowinski at third singles, Brower defeated Hopewell at fifth singles and sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian).  DeMaagd outlasted Seiler at first by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory at first singles.  Both Phillips and Peterson lost just a single game at second and fourth singles respectively.  Calvin is scheduled to play Lakeland tomorrow, Mar. 30, at 10:00 a.m.

Men’s Tennis Claims Come-From-Behind Win Over Spring Arbor

The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to 4-2 on the year with a hard-fought 5-4 non-conference win over Spring Arbor University Thursday afternoon at the Orchard Hills Tennis Center. Calvin trailed 3-0 after doubles play but fought back to win five of the six singles points. The clinching point came from sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) at No. 6 singles as he claimed a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory.Calvin will now prepare for a pair of non-conference matches this weekend in Wisconsin. Calvin will face Ripon on Friday and Lakeland on Saturday.

Women’s lacrosse defeats Loras 20-1 in first game at Zuidema Field

The Calvin College women’s lacrosse team hosted the Loras College Duhawks on a beautiful Thursday afternoon for its first varsity lacrosse held on Calvin’s campus at Zuidema Field. The Knights took a commanding lead early, scored five goals in the opening five minutes en route to a 20-1 victory.  The Knights outshot the Duhawks 48-3 in the contest.  Forbes and Holwerda each scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Knights. Perragaux added three goals while sophomore Lissa Busscher and junior Mary Hoogstra chipped in two apiece. Five Knights tied with four groundballs in the contest. Kaitlyn Kutsch scored the lone goal for Loras, while goalkeeper Sam Schmidt made 12 saves for the Duhawks. Calvin improves to 2-6 on the season while Loras drops to 0-6. The Knights now look forward to next week Saturday when they will travel to Adrian for their first match of conference play. The game against the Bulldogs is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
