Men’s basketball wins MIAA Tournament with 77-57 victory over Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Calvin played host the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College Sat. night at the Van Noord Arena in the MIAA Tournament final.  The meeting marked the 186th time the two rivals have played.  Coming into the game, the Knights were just 1-8 against Hope in MIAA Tournament final games.  Despite its record, Calvin defeated Hope 77-57 in front of 4,293 fans to win its first MIAA Tournament title since 2007.  Snikkers finished with 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.  Powell finished with 18 points while Kruis finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  The Knights shot 45.5 percent from the field while holding the Flying Dutchmen to 33.3 percent shooting and just 1-14 from beyond the arc.  Calvin also held a 41-32 rebounding advantage.  With its win, Calvin, now 24-3, earns the MIAA’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Men’s Basketball Tournament - a tournament Calvin has not appeared in since the 2006-07 season. The tournament field will be announced at 12:30 EST Monday, Feb. 25, on a live video stream courtesy of ncaa.com.

Calvin women’s basketball falls to Hope in MIAA Tournament Championship Game 62-59

The MIAA Tournament Championship pitted the #3 Calvin College Knights and #2 Hope Flying Dutch in the third installment of the rivalry this season. It was the eighth time the two teams have met in the Tournament Championship, with Hope holding a 5-2 edge but losing the last two championship contests. After forty hard-fought minutes, it was the Flying Dutch who came out on top, utilizing strong team defense to earn a 62-59 victory. Calvin will now play a waiting game to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament next week. The NCAA III Tournament field will be announced on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at: http://www.ncaa.com Calvin was led in defeat by senior Carissa Verkaik with 24 points and 13 rebounds as she notched her 47th collegiate double-double in the process.

Women’s Tennis Blanked at Wheaton 8-0

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin women’s tennis team suffered an 8-0 defeat at regionally-ranked Wheaton Friday night to fall to 1-1 on the season.Wheaton swept the three doubles flights and swept five of the six singles flights in straight sets. The lone match that was not completed was at No. 3 singles with the match between Wheaton’s Lauren Schlabach and Calvin sophomore Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) left with Schlabach leading in the third set 4-2. Calvin returns to action on Saturday morning, facing regionally-ranked Coe College at 11:30 a.m. (EST) in a match scheduled to played in Wheaton.

Calvin men’s lacrosse falls to Concordia (Wisc.) 18-1 - Prepares to Face Bendictine Saturday

ADRIAN - The Calvin men’s lacrosse team dipped to 0-3 on the year with an 18-1 loss to Concordia of Wisconsin Friday night in a game played at Adrian’s Performance Stadium. The contest was originally scheduled to be played in Grand Rapids but snow and ice in West Michigan forced the match to be moved across state. Calvin freshman D.J. VanderBaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored the lone goal for the Knights. The goal was his third of the year. Calvin is scheduled to face Benedictine University of Illinois Saturday at 4 p.m. The match will be played at Davenport University in Caledonia, south of Grand Rapids.

Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Lands Seven on All-MIAA Team - Klaasen Most Valuable Diver

The Calvin women’s swim and dive team saw seven members earn All-MIAA honors en route to its ninth straight MIAA Championship.Knights named to the team include seniors Samantha Klaasen, Elizabeth Counsell, and Kristy Kinzer, sophomores Erika Waugh and Kathryn Wrobel, and freshmen Michaela Rookus and Sarah Roth. Klaasen (Holland, MI/Holland Christian HS) was the most valuable diver at this year’s MIAA Championships. The 2013 swim championships marked Klaasen’s third straight year as an All-MIAA selection and third straight year as the MIAA most valuable diver. Klaasen won the one-meter board with a score of 451.15, her third straight year placing first in the event, and the three-meter board with a score of 458.35, taking first for the second time in three years. Calvin continued its championship streak by earning 802.5 points over the MIAA Championships, defeating second-place Hope by 38 points. The Knights have now earned nine straight MIAA Championships and 11 in the last 13 years.

Calvin Men’s Swimming and Diving Lands Five on All-MIAA Team

Five Knights earned All-MIAA honors at last weekend’s MIAA Championships. Calvin earned its highest finish in over twenty years by placing second behind repeat champion Kalamazoo.Senior Mark Rushlow, junior Andrew Mitchell, sophomore Travis Vincent, and freshmen Caleb Meindertsma and Johnson Cochran were each named to the All-MIAA team. Rushlow was named to the All-MIAA team for the third time, Vincent for the second time and Meindertsma, Cochran and Mitchell for the first time. With a second place finish and a point total of 666 points, the Knights topped their previous point record of 635 set in their fourth place finish last year.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards - Men’s Team Academic Team of Year

NEW ORLEANS – The Knights of Calvin College are the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar Team of the Year for the 2012 cross country season as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Calvin took runner-up honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championship title this fall. Scholar Teams of the year are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest as a team at the most recent NCAA Championships. Calvin College, coached by Brian Diemer, has earned a 3.47 cumulative grade point average through the fall semester of 2012. The Knights finished in a tie for second as a team at the NCAA Championships with Haverford, but were able to claim Scholar Team of the Year honors by a slim .027 margin between the two schools’ cumulative team grade point averages. Seven members of the Calvin men’s cross country team also earned individual honors. Those seven are: senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), junior Sam Kerk (Hartland, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS), senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS), senior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS), senior David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS), senior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) and senior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS). The Calvin women’s team also claimed USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors - keeping a string alive that goes back to the late 1980’s. Calvin also had three individuals honored. Those three were: senior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS).

Men’s Basketball Defeats Adrian 71-44 in MIAA Tournament Semifinals - To Face Hope in Final

The Calvin men’s basketball team is headed to the MIAA Tournament Championship game. The Knights booked their ticket to the title tilt with a 71-44 victory over Adrian in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday evening at Van Noord Arena. Calvin will face rival Hope in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at Van Noord Arena. It will mark the seventh time in the last eight years that the two teams have met in the final. Hope (18-8) defeated Trine 76-63 in Thursday’s other semifinal contest. Tickets for Saturday’s game will be available at the Calvin Box Office on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. and will be sold until 5 p.m. and again from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday.  If available, tickets will also be sold at the door Saturday evening.

Women’s Basketball To Face Hope in MIAA Tournament Final Saturday After Semifinal Win Over Trine

Coming off just its second loss of the season at the hands of rival Hope, the #3 Calvin women’s basketball team looked like a team with something to prove in its MIAA Tournament semifinal against Trine Wednesday evening. The Knights took the early lead and did not look back, building a double-digit advantage and cruising to the 83-48 victory. Calvin advances to the MIAA Tournament Championship game on Saturday and will host rival Hope at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Senior Carissa Verkaik led all scorers with 18 points while adding 11 rebounds. On her first rebound of the game, Verkaik became Calvin’s all-time leader in rebounds. Verkaik now holds the all-time records in points, rebounds, and blocked shots. Verkaik also boosted her career scoring total to 2,190 points, moving her into 19th place on the all-time NCAA Division III scoring list. Sophomore Hannah Acre chipped in nine points for the Knights while Tripp, sophomore Abby VanderWoude and senior Julia Hilbrands all scored eight points with Hilbrands grabbing eight rebounds as well.The game also marked a milestone for Calvin seniors Kelsey Irwin, Carissa Verkaik, Julia Hilbrands and Ally Wolffis as it marked the 100th victory at Calvin for the quartet. All four players have been four-year varsity players. In doing so, the group becomes the first set of players in Calvin women’s basketball history to win 100 games in a career. During their time at Calvin, the seniors have posted a won-loss record of 100-14.

General Admission tickets for Saturday’s game will be on sale at Calvin’s website (http://www.calvin.edu/boxoffice), and at the Calvin Box Office Thursday and Friday, February 21 and 22, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Tickets will also be sold at the Arena starting at 1:00pm on Saturday. All tickets will be General Admission.

Ticket Prices: General Admission tickets are FREE for MIAA students with student ID. General Admission tickets are $3.00 for any college faculty/staff and students, High School students and
children, and $5.00 for all others. There is no limit on the number of tickets to be purchased.

Calvin Baseball Team Picked To Finish Fourth in MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll

The Calvin baseball team has been picked to finish fourth in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll.  Four-time defending champion Adrian was selected to repeat as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion. The Bulldogs, who ran away with last season’s championship with a 24-4 record, finishing six games ahead of their nearest competition, received seven of a possible eight first-place votes in the coaches poll. Hope, which was picked to finish second, received the other first-place vote. Coaches could not vote for their own team. Poll Results (first-place votes in parenthesis): 1. Adrian (7) 7 pts. 2.
