Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Carissa Verkaik and Olivet center Stefanie Lang its Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 15. Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), became just the second player in MIAA women’s basketball history to go over 1,000 career points in league play, averaging 19 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots as the Knights moved into sole possession of first place with a pair of wins. She had 21 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a 97-53 win over Kalamazoo, then added 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in a 64-59 victory over Hope. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and ninth time in her career, shot 58 percent from the field (14 of 24) and 82 percent at the line (9 of 11) for the week. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Adrian for a 6 p.m. contest.

Calvin’s Tom Snikkers Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – For the second straight week, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Tom Snikkers as its Co-Player of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through January 12. Snikkers, a senior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), shares the Player of the Week award with Hope’s Colton Overway. Snikkers earned Player of the Week honors as he averaged 20.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in two victories that kept the Knights in a first-place tie in the MIAA race. He had 22 points and six rebounds in a 79-53 win over Kalamazoo, then added 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists as Calvin defeated Alma, 86-63. Snikkers, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career, shot 56 percent from the field (19 of 34) for the week. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts rival Hope at 8 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. The game will be televised live throughout West Michigan on WGVU-TV 35/52. As of Monday afternoon, over 650 tickets still remain for Wednesday’s Calvin-Hope game at VanNoord Arena. CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the University of Chicago Invitational Friday and Saturday. Women’s basketball defeats Hope 64-59, improves to 13-1 (7-0 MIAA) on the season

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The second-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team faced off against rival Hope Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Van Noord Arena.  In front of 2,973 fans, Calvin defeated fifth-ranked Hope 64-59 to improve to 13-1, 7-0 MIAA on the season.  Carissa Verkaik and Engelhard led the Knights scoring 17 and 16 points respectively.  Hilbrands chipped in 11, and senior Logan Marsh (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) chipped in eight points and three steals.  Kussmaul and Kelley led Hope with 16 and 13 points respectively in defeat.  Calvin shot and even 50 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 28 times and shot just 62.1 percent from the free throw line.  Calvin returns to action Jan. 16, when it travels to Adrian for a 6:00 p.m. contest with the Bulldogs.

Men’s basketball defeats Alma 86-63, wins fourth straight MIAA contest

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Looking for its eighth straight win, the Calvin College men’s basketball team hosted the Alma College Scots on Saturday, Jan. 12.  Calvin defeated Alma 86-63 to improve to 13-2 (4-0 MIAA) on the season.  Junior center Tyler Kruis (Grandville/Calvin Christian) led Calvin scoring 21 points and grabbing four rebounds.  Senior Tom Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) came up one point short of three consecutive 20-point performances.  Snikkers finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. Calvin outrebounded Alma 39-28 in the contest, and had 22 assists compared to just 10 turnovers.  Calvin returns to action Wed. January 16, when the Knights host rival Hope College at the Van Noord Arena.  The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Open Indoor Seasons at Bob Eubanks Open

ALLENDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their indoor campaigns on Friday at the Bob Eubanks Open hosted by Grand Valley State University. Calvin put together a number of solid performances in the first competition of the new year. On the men’s side, senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) won the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:38.60 while senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) third (8:41.37) and senior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (8:53.53). Sophomore Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was seventh (8:58.64). On the women’s side, junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led the way with a win in the 3,000 meters, recording a blazing time of 10:03.59. Senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) was second in the mile run (5:15.74) and sophomore Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) fourth (5:16.80) and senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) seventh (5:21.09).

Calvin Men’s Indoor Track and Field Team Ranked 10th in USTFCCCA Division III Top 25 Poll

The first set of Division III Indoor track and field rankings have been released and the Calvin men’s track and field team is ranked 10th by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. Under the direction of head coach Bret Otte, the Knights will open their indoor campaign on Friday at the Bob Euwbanks Open hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Calvin Sets Up Saturday Rivalry Showdown With 97-52 Win Over Kalamazoo

The second-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team rolled to a 97-52 victory over visiting Kalamazoo College Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena. The Calvin victory sets up a showdown for first place in the MIAA with rival Hope Saturday night at Van Noord Arena. Both teams will enter the 7:30 p.m. matchup with 6-0 conference records. Undefeated Hope (14-0 overall) is also ranked fifth in one national poll and sixth in another. In its win over Kalamazoo Wednesday, Calvin (12-1 overall) led 44-17 at halftime and never looked back. The Knights connected on 53 percent of their field goal attempts including 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from three-point range. Senior Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 21 points, eight rebounds, five blocked shots and four steals. She has now scored in double figures in 97 of a possible 102 career games and will carry a 20-game double-figure scoring streak into Saturday’s game with Hope. Senior Julia Hilbrands also continued her strong play off the bench, contributing 13 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior Ally Wolffis contributed eight points

Men’s Basketball Earns Road Victory with 79-53 Win at Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin men’s basketball team made the hour-long trip down US-131 to Kalamazoo College Wednesday night for an MIAA matchup with the Hornets.  The Knights, who were up 11 at halftime, held the host Hornets to just 18 second half points, and left Anderson Athletic Center with a 79-53 victory.  Snikkers turned in his second consecutive 20-point performance, finishing with 22.  Four other Knights finished in double figures.  Calvin outrebounded Kalamazoo 46-32 in the contest.  The Knights shot 45.5 percent from the floor, but just 31.6 (2-9) from three point range.  The Knights also had seven blocks, and forced 17 Hornets turnovers.  Calvin will host the Scots of Alma on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 3:00 p.m.
