Stephanie Fox Named MIAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Stephie Fox its Women’s Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through January 19. Fox, a senior from Kentwood (Homeschooled), helped lead Calvin to three MIAA dual meet victories for the weekend. She won the 1,000 freestyle by more than 18 seconds in a time of 10:45.97 in a Friday meet against Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s, then provided an early spark on Saturday by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:57.23 in a 164-136 victory over Hope. She also finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:18.22) against Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s, and second in the 500 freestyle (5:22.42) against Hope. Fox is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.

Calvin’s Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 19.Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), became the leading career scorer in MIAA women’s basketball history Wednesday as she scored 37 points in an 85-62 road victory over Adrian. She also grabbed 11 rebounds, blocked three shots and added three assists. She now has 1,055 points in 56 MIAA league games for her career. She then became the first player in Calvin women’s history to go over 2,000 career points overall as she added 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots in a 74-54 nonconference victory over Rochester. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and tenth time in her career, shot 57 percent from the field (21 of 37) and 89 percent at the free-throw line (17 of 19) for the week. Calvin is back in action Wednesday evening when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Men’s basketball shuts down Trine 56-43

ANGOLA, IN – The Calvin men’s basketball team faced off against the Trine Thunder looking to avenge a 73-54 loss last season.  After a slow start, the Knights came back and defeated Trine 56-43 to improve to 15-2, 6-0 MIAA on the season.  Powell and Kruis each tallied 16 points.  Powell hit four of eight three-point attempts, and Kruis was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Rogers led the way for the Thunder in defeat with 14 points.  Calvin shot just 32.1 percent from the field in the game, but hit 16 of 19 free throws.  The Knights held the rebound advantage 49-25.  Calvin will travel to Olivet on Wednesday, Jan. 23, to face the Comets with a two-game lead in the MIAA.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Claim Dual Meet Victories Over Hope

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recorded dual meet victories over rival Hope Saturday afternoon in front of a standing room only crowd at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. In the women’s meet, Calvin defeated the Flying Dutch 164-136. On the men’s side, Calvin edged the Flying Dutchmen 146.5-to-133.5 The Calvin women are now 5-3 overall in dual meet competition including 5-0 against league opponents. The Calvin men are now 4-3 overall and 3-1 against league opponents. Both Calvin teams close out their dual meet campaigns on February 2 at Albion at 1 p.m.

Verkaik Becomes First 2,000 Point Scorer in Calvin Women’s Bball History in Win Over Rochester

Saturday’s matchup at Van Noord Arena featured a non-conference game between the Rochester College Warriors and the Calvin College Knights. Calvin claimed a 74-54 victory behind 22 points and 12 rebounds from senior Carissa Verkaik and 15 points from senior Kelsey Irwin. Verkaik notched her 42nd collegiate double-double and in the process, became the first player in Calvin women’s basketball history to reach the 2,000 point plateau. She now has 2,008 career points after Saturday’s win. Ranked second nationally, Calvin is also 15-1 overall.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Compete at Mike Lints Invitational at GVSU

ALLENDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Mike Lints Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University on Friday. Top performances for the Calvin women included senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) placing third in the 800 meters (2:20.08), sophomore Christina Geating (Abington, PA/Abington HS) placing 10th in the pole vault (10-4) and junior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) placing fifth in the triple jump (33-4 3/4). Notable performances for the Calvin men included sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing fourth in the 5,000 meters (15:36.34), sophomore Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS) placing eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.85) and junior Andrew Dykstra (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) placing eighth in the shot put (46-6 3/4). Both Calvin track and field teams are back in action next Friday and Saturday, competing in a Friday/Saturday invitational at Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois.

Swimming and Diving Teams Compete Against Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s in Dual Meets

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team picked up a pair of dual meet victories on Friday night while the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team suffered its first dual meet loss against an MIAA foe. In competition hosted by Saint Mary’s College at the University of Notre Dame, the Calvin women defeated Kalamazoo 151-90 and Saint Mary’s 186-54 while the Calvin men were defeated by Kalamazoo 157-77.The Calvin women’s team is now 4-3 in dual meet competition this year including 4-0 against MIAA opponents while the Calvin men’s team is 3-3 overall including 2-1 against league opponents. Both Calvin teams are back in action on Saturday, hosting rival Hope at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center with an alumni reception set to follow after the meet.

Men’s basketball uses team defense to defeat Hope 75-49

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin men’s basketball team had not beaten rival Hope in five games.  The last time the Knights defeated the Flying Dutchmen at the Van Noord Arena was a 79-76 win during the 2009-10 season.  All streaks eventually come to an end.  In front of 4,503 fans, Calvin defeated Hope 75-49 to improve to 14-2, 5-0 MIAA on the season.  Brink led the way for Calvin with 16 points.  Snikkers and Powell chipped in 13 apiece. Calvin shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, 49.2, and exactly 50 percent from three-point range (10-20).  De Vries came off the bench to give Calvin six points, 11 rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes. The win for Calvin was its biggest margin of victory against Hope since a 95-68 win in March of 1990.  Calvin will travel to Trine University on Saturday, Jan. 19, to face the Thunder in a 3:00 p.m. contest.

Carissa Verkaik Becomes All-Time MIAA Scoring Leader in 85-62 Win at Adrian

ADRIAN - It was quite a night for the Calvin women’s basketball team and Carissa Verkaik. Calvin used a 37-point performance from the senior All-American to pick up an 85-62 victory at Adrian College Wednesday night. With her 37-point performance, Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) becomes the all-time career scoring leader in MIAA history for conference games. Verkaik now has 1,055 career points in conference play, surpassing the previous MIAA record of 1,051 points set by Saint Mary’s graduate Allison Kessler. Verkaik established the new mark in 56 games while Kessler did so in 64 games from 2004-to-2008.

Calvin Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Both in D3hoops.com Top 25 Polls

For the first time since week four of the 2007-08 season, the Calvin men’s basketball team has cracked the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Knights are ranked 21st in this week’s poll after having received votes last week but missing out on cracking the top 25. Meanwhile, the Calvin women’s basketball team continues to hold the number-two spot in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. It marks the third straight week that the Knights have held the number-two spot in the poll.The Calvin men’s basketball team holds a 13-2 overall record and is off to its best start since the 1999-2000 season. The Calvin women’s basketball team is 13-1 overall and has lost just three games over the past two years. The Calvin women’s basketball team is coming off a 64-59 victory over rival Hope Saturday night. Calvin is in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings at 7-0 in conference play.
