Carissa Verkaik Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team in Women’s Basketball

Calvin College senior Carissa Verkaik has been named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District 6 team in women’s basketball. As a member of the all-district team, Verkaik now advances to the national ballot and is eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is averaging 19.6 points and 8.9 rebounds a game while connecting on 59.0 percent of her field goal attempts. She has also blocked 59 shots for an average just over over three blocks per game. She is ranked nationally in both field goal percentage and blocked shots per-game average. Verkaik carries a 3.76 grade point average while majoring in education.

Men’s Basketball Remains Undefeated in MIAA Play with 83-63 win against Albion

GRAND RAPIDS, MI Ė The Calvin College menís basketball team remained undefeated in MIAA play Wednesay night with an 83-63 win over the Britons of Albion College.  The Knights improve to 18-2, 9-0 MIAA on the season.Powell finished with a game-high 17 points on 6-10 shooting.  Brink scored 14.  Kruis had 12 points and eight rebounds.  Albion was led by senior point guard Anthony Wash (Redford/Redford Union), who scored 16 points.  As a team, the Knights dished out 18 assists while committing just eight turnovers.  Calvin won the rebounding battle 27-22.  Calvin will return to action Saturday when it hosts the Hornets of Kalamazoo College.

Women’s Basketball Defeats Kalamazoo 92-35 to Remain Unbeaten in League Play

KALAMAZOO - Calvin continued its undefeated MIAA season Wednesday night when it traveled to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets. The Knights received good minutes and strong play from its bench as they defeated the Hornets 92-35 at the Anderson Athletic Center. Senior Carissa Verkaik finished the game with 19 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Sophomore Hannah Acre added a career high 13 points and nine rebounds while senior Logan Marsh tallied 12 points on four three-pointers. Calvin finished the game shooting 56% from the field. The Knights bench outscored the Kalamazoo bench 47-19. Calvin is now 11-0 in conference play and 18-1 overall, while Kalamazoo drops to 2-18 overall and 1-11 in the MIAA. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will play in the first game of a basketball doubleheader at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Compete at NAIA/D3 Challenge at Olivet Nazarene

Bourbonnais,  Illinois - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the NAIA/Division III Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University Saturday. A number of Calvin athletes recorded notable performances. Highlights for the women’s team included junior Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) winning the 800 meters (2:20.38), fifth-year senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) winning the mile run (5:09.88) and junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) winning the 5,000 meters with an indoor career-best time of 16:58.03. Winners for the men included senior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 3,000 meters (8:54.88) and senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:40.29. Both Calvin teams will now break until February 8 and 9 as some athletes will compete at the Grand Valley State Big Meet on February 8 while several others will compete at Calvin’s own Calvin Invitational on February 9.

Bryan Powell Sinks Game-Winning Triple In Closing Seconds To Lift Calvin to 50-47 Victory at Adrian

ADRIAN - Calvin senior Bryan Powell drilled a game-winning three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left in regulation to lift Calvin to a 50-47 victory at Adrian Saturday night. The victory allows Calvin to improve to 17-2 overall and remain unbeaten in league play at 8-0. It marked Calvin’s first victory at Adrian since the 2009-10 season. Ranked 17th nationally, Calvin was led by Powell with 13 points while senior Tom Snikkers had 10 points. Junior Mickey DeVries also had a strong game off the bench with eight points, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Calvin trailed 29-20 early in the second half but went on a 16-6 run to take a lead it would hold until the Bulldogs hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left, setting up Powell’s game-winning heroics. The Knights continue to hold a two-game lead for first place in the MIAA standings. Calvin returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Carissa Verkaik Becomes Calvin Career Leader in Blocked Shots In 77-55 Victory Over Alma

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin senior Carissa Verkaik became the Calvin career leader in blocked shots on Saturday in helping the second-ranked Knights to a 77-55 victory over visiting Alma College. The senior out of Holland Christian High School blocked six shots to go with 20 points and seven rebounds. She now has 404 career blocks, surpassing the previous record of 399 set by 1990 Calvin graduate Sally Huyser. Earlier this year, Verkaik became the MIAA career scoring leader and also the first player in MIAA women’s basketball history to score more than 2000 points in a career. Calvin (17-1 overall, 10-0 MIAA) also received 14 points from Ally Wolffis and 10 points from Kayla Engelhard in the win. Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams/Men’s Indoor Track & Field Team Nationally-Ranked

The Calvin menís indoor track and field team is ranked 12th in the latest set of Division III Top 25 (indoor) rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association of America. Meanwhile, the Calvin menís swimming and diving team is ranked 18th and the Calvin womenís swimming and diving team is ranked 20th in the latest Collegeswimming.com Division III Top 25 poll.It now means that five of Calvinís six winter sports teams are nationally-ranked as its womenís basketball team is ranked second, its menís indoor track and field team ranked 12th, its menís basketball team ranked 17th, its menís swimming and diving team ranked 18th and its womenís swimming and diving team ranked 20th.

Men’s basketball perfect through first half of MIAA play with 73-57 win at Olivet

OLIVET, MI Ė The #17 ranked Calvin menís basketball team traveled to the Cutler Athletic Complex Wed., Jan. 23 for a showdown with the Comets of Olivet College.  Despite losing two of the previous three games to the Comets at Olivet, the Knights defeated the Comets 73-57 to improve to 16-2, 7-0 MIAA on the season.  Snikkers led Calvin with 21 points and nine rebounds, falling one rebound short of a double-double.  Powell, Tyler Kruis (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and Dykstra all scored in double figures, finishing with 15, 13 and 12 points respectively.  Krum led the Comets in defeat with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Olivet did shoot the three point shot well.  The Comets were 10-25 in the game, good for 40 percent.  Calvin shot 43.3 percent from the field, but dominated on the boards.  Calvin outrebounded the Comets 45-25, 17 of which were offensive.  Over the last seven seasons, Calvin is now 155-35 (.756) when it outrebounds its opponents.  Calvin will travel to Merrilat Gymnasium on Sat., Jan. 26, for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Adrian Bulldogs.  Calvin defeated then #7 Adrian 56-50 at the Van Noord Arena back on Jan. 3.

Women’s Basketball Picks Up 82-38 Win Over Albion at Van Noord Arena

Calvinís second-ranked womenís basketball team took on Albion College Wednesday January 23 at the Van Noord Arena. The Knights kept up their reputation in the MIAA with a sound 82-38 victory over the Britons. The Knights improve to 16-1 and are still undefeated in league play at 9-0 in MIAA action. Calvin shot 50% from the field and also an impressive 13-28 behind the 3-point line with Kelsey Irwin, Kayla Engelhard and Carissa Verkaik tallying three apiece. Carissa led the Knights in points and rebounds with 23 points and 10 boards and shot a perfect 3-3 from downtown. Her performance marked her 44th collegiate double-double. Engelhard and Irwin had 11 points apiece while seniors Heather DeKleine and Logan Marsh and sophomore Breanna Verkaik all have four assists each.

Men’s BBall Moves Up to #17/Women’s BBall Ranked Second in D3hoops.com Top 25 Polls

The Calvin men’s basketball team has made a move up in the latest set of D3hoops.com Top 25 rankings while the Calvin women’s team continues to hold its number-two spot. After breaking into the poll last week at the #21 spot, the Calvin men’s basketball team is ranked #17th in this week’s poll. St. Thomas (MN) holds the number-one spot while Rochester (NY) is ranked second. On the women’s side, Calvin is ranked second for the fourth consecutive week. The Knights received two first place votes in this week’s poll with DePauw holding the top spot with 23 first place votes. Rival Hope is right behind the Calvin women as the Flying Dutch are ranked third. The Calvin men’s team travels to Olivet on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. contest while the Calvin women’s team will host Albion at 7:30 p.m.
