TOWSON, Md. – Senior outside hitter Lizzie Kamp of Calvin College leads the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Volleyball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kamp has been chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award winner for Division III volleyball. The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program. An accounting major with a 3.69 G.P.A., Kamp is making her second appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® Volleyball team after earning second team honors as a junior in 2011. A native of Orland Park, Ill., Kamp followed in her older sister’s footsteps when she was named as the 2012 Division III National Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). A two-time AVCA All-American, Kamp led the Knights to a 33-3 record and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Championship Division III Tournament. This marks the second straight year that a member of the Kamp family has been named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for Division III volleyball. Her older sister, Rebecca Kamp of Calvin won the award last year. A three-time selection to the All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team, Lizzie Kamp was honored as the league’s Player of the Year in 2012. She finished the season with 528 kills and ranked fifth in the nation with 4.43 kills per set.

HANCOCK, Mich. – The Calvin College men’s basketball team made the nine-hour drive to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to face the Lions in an in-region contest Saturday afternoon. The Knights were victorious, defeating Finlandia 103-62 to improve to 7-2 on the season. Snikkers finished with a season-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. This moves Snikkers to 13th on Calvin’s all-time scoring list with 1,150 points. Kruis finished with 20 points. Sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) added 10 points. Finlandia was led in defeat by junior Dominic Morrow (Taylor, Mich.) and freshman Dylan Schroeder (Brimley, Mich.) with 13 and 12 points respectively. Calvin will return to action December 28 and 29 when it travels to Elmhusrt, Ill. The Knights will face Wabash in the first round and then face either Elmhurst or Ripon on day two of the tournament.

The latest set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin has taken over the lead with 308.50 points. The latest set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury (Vt.) is in second with 306.5 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships. In addition, Calvin picked up 50 points from its women’s soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament and 25 points from its men’s soccer team that reached the first round of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin had been in second place in the first set of standings released two weeks ago but has since moved up to first place due to points gained through its men’s and women’s soccer teams.

Four members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have received Division III All-Central Region honors. Those four individuals are seniors Nick Holtrop, Joe Broekhuizen and Dan Nederhoed and sophomore Travis Vegter. Holtrop has been named to the All-Central Region first team while Broekhuizen has been named to the second team and Nederhoed and Vegter to the third team. Holtrop and Nederhoed are receiving all-region accolades for the second straight year while Broekhuizen and Vegter are being so honored for the first time.

ALMA - Calvin traveled to Alma Wednesday night for its second conference match of the young season to face the Scots. Calvin, ranked third in the nation in the latest DIII polls, struggled in the opening minutes, but then a seven minute stretch midway through the first half saw the Knights build a sizable advantage and never look back. Calvin was able to use its depth throughout the game, earning a 97-56 win to move to 2-0 in conference.Carissa Verkaik led the Knights in victory one rebound short of a double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds. The performance marked the 91st double-digit scoring performance of her collegiate career. Irwin and sophomore Maria De Kuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) each added 12 points, a career high for the sophomore, while Wolffis chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Kassidi Adams and Raeanna Zink each scored 13 points to lead the Scots. Calvin is now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. The Knights now have an extended break before their conference home opener on Saturday, December 15 against the Belles of Saint Mary’s. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

Two members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have received Division III All-Central Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Senior Francesca Smith has been named to the Division III All-Central Region second team while junior Danielle Carter has been named to the third team. A midfielder, Smith hails from Bloomington, Indiana. She is a graduate of Bloomington South High School. She is receiving all-region honors for the second time as she was a third team all-region choice in 2010. This fall, Smith tallied five goals, five assists and 15 points while landing a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year. A four-year starter in midfield, Smith accumulated 18 goals and 20 assists during her Calvin career for a total of 56 points.A native of DeWitt and a graduate of DeWitt High School, Carter was also a part of Calvin’s midfield attack this fall. She tallied a career-high eight goals this fall while also assisting on four others. Of her eight goals, four were game-winners including an overtime strike in a 1-0 win at Saint Mary’s in September and a memorable score with just one second left in the first overtime of a 2-1 win over Hope in the MIAA Tournament final. Carter was also named to the All-MIAA first team this fall. Heading into her senior year of play, she has amassed 15 goals, eight assists and 38 points.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will head into Christmas break holding national rankings. In the most recent set of Division III Top 25 polls conducted by Collegeswimming.com, the Calvin women’s team is ranked 16th while the Calvin men’s team is ranked 20th. Both teams are coming off of solid performances at the Calvin Winter Invitational last weekend. Both teams took fourth place in a field filled with Division II competition and several other Division III schools. Calvin will spend part of its post-exam Christmas break training for a week in Coral Springs, Florida.

The Calvin women’s basketball team continues to hold the number-three spot in a pair of Division III national polls. The Knights are ranked third in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and also third in the WBCA/USA Today Sports Division III Top 25 poll. Calvin College senior Nick Holtrop has been named a second team Continental Tire Division III All-American in men’s soccer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Holtrop is receiving Division III All-America honors for the first time. Holtrop is the seventh individual in Calvin men’s soccer history to be named an All-American and it marks the eighth time a Calvin player has been so honored. A midfielder, Holtrop collected four goals, seven assists and 15 points in helping lead Calvin to an unprecedented sixth consecutive MIAA regular season title this fall along with an MIAA Tournament title and a sixth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament.

The Calvin Winter Invitational concluded Saturday evening after its third day of competition. Another strong day in the pool for the Knights saw a number of top finishes as both teams took fourth in the final team standings. On the women’s side, sophomore Erika Waugh established a new school record in the women’s 200 backstroke with a second place and NCAA III B’ cut time of 2:05.59. Senior Samanthan Klaasen won the one-meter diving competition while freshman Michaela Rookus took home a win in the 200 IM. Senior Elizabeth Counsell also had a strong second place finish in the 200 breaststroke. On the men’s side, senior Mark Rushlow highlighted the day, placing second in the 100 butterfly. His morning prelim time of 49.91 was an NCAA B’ cut time.< 1 2 3 >
