Six Knights Earn All-MIAA Honors in Men’s Soccer

ROYAL OAK - Six members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have earned All-MIAA honors.  Seniors Nick Holtrop, Dan Nederhood and Joe Broekhuizen as well as sophomore Travis Vegter earned spots on the All-MIAA First Team.  Junior Zach Willis and sophomore Sean Broekhuizen were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.  In addition, Holtrop was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player.

Calvin’s Carissa Verkaik Named Preseason All-American by D3hoops.com

Calvin senior Carissa Verkaik has been named to the preseason D3hoops.com All-America first team.A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik averaged 19.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game last year. Heading into her senior year, she is currently second on the Calvin career scoring list with 1,697 points, need just 25 points to become Calvin’s all-time leading scorer. Earlier this fall, she was named the preseason player of the year by Women’s Basketball Division III News.

Four Knights Earn All-MIAA Honors in Women’s Soccer

ROYAL OAK - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has released its All-MIAA First and Second Teams in women’s soccer.  Four Knights earned All-MIAA honors.  Senior Francesca Smith, junior Danielle Carter and freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel were named to the All-MIAA First Team.  Freshmen Sydney Kinney was named to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Women’s Soccer Headed to Loras for NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin College women’s soccer team will travel to Loras (Iowa) for an NCAA III Tournament first round game with Aurora (Ill.).  Aurora comes into the game with a 19-1-1 record.  The other matchup will feature host Loras (17-4) against St. Scholastica of Minnesota (17-4-1).  Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for college students and senior citizens.  Calvin will face Aurora at 7:30 p.m. CST with the first game being played at 5:00 p.m. CST.  Calvin (15-4-1) is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA III Tournament under head coach Mark Recker and ninth overall.  The Knights are 7-3-5 all-time in the NCAA III Tournament and have advanced to the national quarterfinals twice in school history (2006 and 2009).  The Knights won the MIAA regular season title this year finishing 12-3-1 in league play.

Men’s Soccer Headed to Dominican for NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin College men’s soccer team will travel to Dominican University (Ill.) for an NCAA III Tournament first-round matchup with DePauw (13-1-5) on November 9.  The other game will feature host Dominican (16-2-1) against Webster from Missouri (12-5-2).  Calvin will face DePauw at 1:30 p.m. CST.  Calvin (16-3-1) will be making its 11th appearance and sixth straight in the NCAA III Tournament.  A season ago, Calvin fell to Ohio Wesleyan 2-1 in the national championship game.  Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title this year, finishing 12-1-1 in league play.

Johnson Cochran Named MIAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Johnson Cochran and Kalamazoo’s Lauren Seroka as its Athletes of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through November 3. Cochran, a freshman from Mount Vernon, Ohio (Mount Vernon HS), took first place in both breaststroke events as the Knights defeated Wheaton, Ill., 163-117, in a nonleague dual meet. He won the 100-yard breaststroke in :58.23 and 200 breaststroke in 2:11.1, with both times ranking at the top of the MIAA early in the season. Cochran is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

Reed Bowden Named MIAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Olivet midfielder Jon Puente and Calvin defender Reed Bowden its Players of the Week in men’s soccer for games played through November 3. Bowden, a sophomore from Uxbridge, Mass. (Whitinsville Christian HS), anchored a strong defensive effort from his centerback position as he led the Knights to back-to-back shutouts in the MIAA tournament. Calvin limited its opposition to 12 shots for the tournament in wins over Kalamazoo, 1-0, and Olivet, 3-0. Bowden is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Maggie Kamp and Kelly Gordon Receive MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin outside hitter Maggie Kamp its Position Player of the Week and Calvin libero Kelly Gordon its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through November 3. Kamp, a freshman from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), slammed 34 kills and had an attack percentage of .368 in leading Calvin to the MIAA tournament championship. In the championship match against Hope, she led the Knights with 19 kills as the Knights rallied to win the match in five sets. Kamp is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Gordon, a senior from Caledonia (Grand Rapids South Christian HS), played a pivotal role defensively in Calvin’s run to the MIAA tournament championship, leading the Knights with 30 digs in their two matches. She had 18 digs to lead Calvin in the championship match against Hope. It’s the second Player of the Week honor in Gordon’s career, with the other coming after last year’s MIAA tournament.

Calvin to Host Eight Team NCAA III Volleyball Regional

The Calvin women’s volleyball team will host an eight-team NCAA III regional November 8-10 at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.  Joining Calvin at the regional will be Wittenberg (Oh.), Ohio Northern (Oh.), Otterbein (Oh.), Hope (Mich.), Mount Union (Oh.), Medaille (New York) and Heidelberg (Oh.).  First round match ups on November 8 will feature Wittenberg (25-4) against Ohio Northern (23-6), Otterbein (26-7) against Hope (28-4), Mount Union (26-6) against Medaille (16-12) and Heidelberg (19-14) against Calvin (28-2).  Wittenberg will face Ohio Northern at 12:30 p.m. EST.  Otterbein will play Hope at 3:00 p.m. EST.  Mount Union will play Medaille at 5:30 p.m. EST.  Heidelberg will face host Calvin at 8:00 p.m. EST.  Calvin will be making its 22nd NCAA III Tournament appearance including its ninth consecutive under head coach Amber Warners.  The Knights are 28-22 all-time in NCAA III Tournament Play.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meet Action at Wheaton

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in action for dual meets at Wheaton on Saturday.  In the men’s competition, 25th-ranked Calvin recorded a 163-117 victory to move to 3-1 on the season.  On the women’s side, 15th-ranked Calvin fell to eighth-ranked Wheaton 157-131 to fall to 2-2 on the season. Both Calvin teams are back in action on Friday, traveling to Division II Wayne State University for non-conference dual meet action at 5 p.m.
