Calvin Second in First Set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Standings

The first set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin is currently in second place with 233.50 points. The first set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury leads the standings with 256.50 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships last weekend. The Learfield Director’s Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.

Calvin Volleyball Team Finishes Second in Final AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll of 2012

The final AVCA Division III Top 25 poll has been released and Calvin is ranked second in the final poll. National champion St. Thomas is the top-ranked team while Christopher Newport is ranked third, Elmhurst fourth, Wittenberg fifth, Emory sixth, Hope seventh, Washington-St. Louis eighth, Puget Sound ninth and Cal Lutheran 10th. Against teams ranked in the final top 10, Calvin posted a 7-3 record this fall. Against teams ranked in the final AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin posted an 11-3 record this season.

Amber Warners Named AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year in Women’s Volleyball

Lexington, Ky. (November 21, 2012) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has announced that Calvin College head women’s volleyball coach Amber Warners has been selected as the 2012 AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year. It marks the second time in three years that Warners has received the honor as she also received the award in 2010. She will officially receive the award at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Ky. on Thursday, December 13.  The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention.

In her 11th year at the helm of the Calvin women’s volleyball program, Warners has built a Division III powerhouse, leading the Knights to nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments. In 2012, Calvin once again proved it was one of the top teams in the nation, reaching the national championship match for the second time in three seasons, falling to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at Hope College after winning it all in 2010. Entering the NCAA Tournament,Calvin was ranked No. 1 in the nation and never fell below a No. 3 ranking the entire year.

Women’s Basketball Rolls To Win Over Manchester

Calvin bounced back in the win column with a 77-45 victory over the visiting Manchester Spartans Tuesday night inside Van Noord Arena. A year ago Calvin edged Manchester 48-43 on the road but in Tuesday’s victory Calvin limited the Spartans (0-3) to 25.5 percent field goal shooting as the Knights held a 38-17 lead at halftime and never looked back. Calvin will travel to Thomas More College this weekend to compete at the Julie Costello Memorial Classic. Calvin will face 14th-ranked Thomas More on Saturday at 7 p.m. and will then meet Centre College on Saturday at 3 p.m. Both Thomas More and Centre advanced to the NCAA III Tournament a year ago.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Anderson 98-56, Improves to 3-0 on Season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men’s basketball team continued its pattern of strong defense and unselfish offensive play in a 98-56 thrashing of Anderson University, IN.  The Knights avenged a 73-60 loss at Anderson a season ago.  Calvin was very balanced on offense.  The Knights shot 58.3 percent from the field.  Sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) led the Knights with 13 points on six of seven shooting.  Senior Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) and Kruis had 11 points apiece.  Matt De Boer (Hudsonville/Covenant Christian) was the fourth Knight scoring in double figures with ten points.  Calvin will play in the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic over Thanksgiving weekend hosted by Hope College.  Calvin will play two familiar NAIA foes in Aquinas on Friday and Cornerstone on Saturday.

The past weekend marked a landmark for Calvin women’s athletics as the Calvin women’s volleyball team not only participated in the NCAA III Championship finals at Hope College - but did so in front of an NCAA III Finals record crowd of 3,517 fans. The record crowd comes during the 40-year anniversary of Title IX. Calvin to Host Winter Skills Softball Clinic February 2

The Calvin softball program will offer a spring training skills clinic on February 2 for grades 7-12. Campers will work side by side with Calvin athletes and focus on the fundamental skills as well as more advanced skills used in the game of softball.  Campers will also participate in team competition. The camp will be held inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Campers will also participate in team competitions.

Men’s Basketball Captures Calvin Tip-Off Tournament Title With Win Over North Park

Calvin rolled to the championship of its own Calvin Tipoff Tournament, defeating North Park 83-54 in the title tilt. The championship victory is Calvin’s ninth in 12 years.Calvin broke the game open with a 14-0 run to end the first half, en route to taking a 43-25 lead at intermission. Calvin kept the pressure on in the second half and never looked back. Sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) and senior Tom Snikkers (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) had 13 points apiece while junior center Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) had 12 points. For his efforts over the weekend, Kruis was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by senior Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park HS). Junior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) also had eight points and 12 rebounds off the bench while Powell had nine points - all from beyond the three-point arc.The Knights will host Anderson University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Hoops Falls to Stevens Point - Carissa Verkaik Becomes Calvin’s All-Time Leading Scorer

DECATUR, IL - In a rematch of last year’s NCAA III Tournament second round game, Wisconsin-Stevens Point handed Calvin an 84-63 defeat.  Ranked seventh in the D3hoops.com Top 25 preseason poll, Stevens Point led 45-25 at halftime and continued to maintain a healthy lead throughout the second half. Senior Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led Calvin with 14 points and in doing so, moved past Lisa Winkle to become Calvin’s all-time leading scorer. Verkaik now has 1,734 career points. Senior Logan Marsh (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) was the only other Calvin player to reach double-digits in scoring as she tallied 11 points including three triples. Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Manchester at 5:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Volleyball Falls to St. Thomas in Five Sets in National Finals

HOLLAND, MI – The Calvin College women’s volleyball team fell short in its bid for a second national title in three seasons.  Down two sets to none, the University of St. Thomas Tommies came back to win a thrilling five set match in from of a record crowd of 3,517 fans by scores of 13-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 15-9.The Tommies were led by Greenfield, who was later named the NCAA III Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and Kelly Foley.  Each recorded 14 kills.  Sarah Atkinson hit a .455 clip while recording 12 kills.  Calvin was led by Crowe, who hit a .407 clip while scoring 14 kills.  Junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) dished out 45 assists.  Lizzie and Maggie Kamp each recorded 12 kills.  Calvin finishes its season with a record of 33-3 and a national runner-up finish.  The senior class for the Knights, consisting of Kim Start (Grand Rapids Christian), Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian), Jen Pluymert (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids Christian), Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian), Becca Ratkov (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay), Kim Start (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Megan Korber (Gilford, NH/Gilford) leave the Calvin volleyball program as the most successful class in program history.  With a career record of 124-15, this group of seven women impacted the program on and off the court.
