By Mark DeHaan

Looking to start off the season on the right foot, the Calvin women’s soccer team had a tall task ahead of it Tuesday afternoon when it played host to the national runner-up and 4th ranked foe Wheaton Thunder. Hanging with the more experienced Thunder for much of the first half, Calvin’s young roster showed a lot of energy and fight in the opening half hour of play but ultimately fell by a 3-2 score when the final horn sounded. Calvin trailed 1-0 at halftime and then fell behind 2-0 in the second half before a Paige Capel goal tripped the Wheaton lead in half. Wheaton answered with a goal to go up 3-1 but Kelly Koets tickled the twine with 15 minutes remaining to bring the Knights within one but Calvin did not score again. Calvin would seek to rebound from Tuesday’s loss by hosting nationally-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University Friday night at 5:30 p.m. at Grand Rapids Christian High School’s Memorial Stadium.
