Women’s Golf Fourth at MIAA Jamboree - Fourth in Overall Standings

SOUTH BEND, IN – The Calvin women’s golf team took fourth at the third MIAA Jamboree of the year on Wednesday, posting a team score of 342 strokes. Calvin is currently in fourth place in the overall MIAA standings, just two strokes behind Saint Mary’s. Calvin’s top golfer on Wednesday was junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) with a round of 83 that was good for fourth place individually. Freshman Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 85, senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 86, freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) and 88 and senior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) a 101.
Men’s Soccer Wins at Hope 1-0 - Extends Win Streak to Three

Looking to extend their two game win streak, the Knights of Calvin traveled to Van Andel Stadium in Holland to face the Flying Dutchmen of Hope. And, just as they had last year, the Knights returned to Grand Rapids with an exciting 1-0 victory. Calvin’s lone goal came early as sophomore Travis Vegter struck for the Knights, breaking through the Hope back line to face Hope freshman keeper Ethan Beswick one-on-one. Dribbling toward the corner of the six yard box, Vegter snuck a shot under Beswick’s arm and inside the near post to put Calvin up 1-0. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will travel to Kalamazoo College to face the Hornets. The Hornets, also 3-1 in conference, are tied with Calvin for second in the MIAA while Olivet sits in first at 4-0. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Earlier this summer two former Calvin basketball players, Derek Griffin and Brent Schuster, had an extremely unique opportunity to team up and participate in a FIBA-sponsored 3x3 basketball tournament. They were invited to play after winning a “Hoop It Up” 3x3 tournament the year before. Several teams from across the United States participated and the gold medal team would be selected to play in the FIBA 3x3 world tour in Athens, Greece. The tournament lasted a few days and was held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Griffin is also now participating in the FIBA-sponsored 3x3 world tour. Women’s Soccer Gains 1-0 Win at Olivet Behind Second Half Goal From Paige Capel

OLIVET - The Calvin women’s soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory at Olivet Tuesday afternoon, improving to 4-2-0 overall and to 3-1-0 in the MIAA. Sophomore Paige Capel scored the only goal of the game, converting a feed from freshman teammate Taylor TenHarmsel in the 63rd minute of play. Calvin held a 22-6 shots at goal advantage. Junior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn picked up the shutout victory in goal for the Knights who travel to Saint Mary’s on Thursday for a 4 p.m. contest.

WEST OLIVE - At the midpoint of the MIAA season, the Calvin men’s golf team has taken a 22-stroke lead for first place in the league standings. The Knights did so with a first place score of 304 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club Monday afternoon.The first place score was 11 strokes better than second place Alma and more importantly 20 strokes ahead of Trine University which trailed Calvin by just two strokes heading into Monday. Senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) overcame a score of 9 on his third hole of the day to finish the day with a first place of 73. It marks the first time that Sarkipato has claimed medalist honors in his collegiate career.

Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen Receive MIAA Runner of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen as its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through Sept. 9.Kerr, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), was first across the finish line in leading the Knights to an impressive performance at the MIAA Jamboree Friday at Saint Mary’s, posting a time of 25:30 over the 8-kilometer course. Kerr is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time in his career.
Michmerhuizen, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), won the women’s race at the MIAA Jamboree at Saint Mary’s Friday, crossing the finish line in a time of 22:01. Her performance led the Knights to a first-place showing at the Jamboree. Michmerhuizen is being honored as Runner of the Week for the first time in her career.

ALMA - The Calvin women’s golf season just keeps getting better and better. On Saturday, the Knights posted a school record score of 335 strokes in taking second place at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club. On Thursday, Calvin posted a school record score of 338 strokes in taking third at a league tournament. Saturday’s score was not only good for second place but also moved Calvin within one stroke of second place in the overall league standings. Junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin on Saturday with a round of 80 that was good for third place individually. She was followed closely by senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who carded a round of 83 that was good for a tie for sixth place Saturday. Freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with a collegiate-best score of 84.

Calvin women’s soccer played host to Albion Saturday afternoon in the first game of a women’s-men’s soccer doubleheader. The Knights took the first match of the doubleheader, defeating the Britons 11-0. Calvin (3-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 MIAA) received two goals apiece from senior Francesca Smith and freshman Taylor TenHarmsel. Also scoring goals for Calvin were senior Liz Cancel, sophomore Paige Capel, junior Danielle Carter, junior Heidi Scholten, freshman Abigal Ploeg, junior Kelly Koets and freshman Christina Drost. The Knights now look forward to a busy week where they will play at Olivet on Tuesday, at Saint Mary’s on Thursday, and home against Adrian on Saturday.

Looking to duplicate the result of the women’s game, the Knights men’s soccer team had plenty of work to do if they wanted to come up with a similar 11-0 win. Although Calvin (4-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 MIAA) did not score 11 goals, it still came away with a dominant 7-1 win. Senior Joe Broekhuizen had two goals for Calvin while senior Nick Holtrop, junior Ben Honeycutt, senior Chris Nance, sophomore Adrien Mary and freshman Taylor Pruis also scored for the Knights. Andrew Claucherty and Jared Rushlau split time in goal for the Knights with each keeper recording two saves. Calvin will now prepare for its rivalry game at Hope Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Stadium.
Calvin volleyball team remains unbeaten in MIAA with three-set win at Trine

The Calvin women’s volleyball team stayed on top of the MIAA standings with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon. Ranked second nationally, Calvin (13-1 overall, 6-0 MIAA) picked up 10 kills from senior Lizzie Kamp and six kills apiece from senior Julia Hilbrands and freshman Maggie Kamp. Junior setter Megan Rietema had 25 assists and seven digs while senior Kelly Gordon contributed eight digs. Hilbrands also had eight block assists and one block solo while Rietema had six block assists and sophomore Emily Crowe three block assists. Calvin will now break until Wednesday when it travels to Saint Mary’s for a 7 p.m. match.
