Men’s Golf Wins MIAA Jamboree at Alma - Widens Overall Lead in MIAA Standings

ALMA - The Calvin men’s golf team got back on the winning track with a first place team score of 301 strokes at the sixth MIAA Jamboree of the year. The jamboree was hosted on Saturday by Alma at the Pine River Country Club. With two MIAA Jamborees left to play, Calvin has a 20-stroke lead over second place Trine and a 27-stroke lead over third place Hope. Calvin will host the upcoming MIAA Jamboree this Monday at the Watermark Country Club in Cascade. Calvin has now taken first place at four MIAA Jamborees this year - marking the most first place team finishes in school history in a single year.

Knights Blank Hornets 5-0, Win Fourth Straight

KALAMAZOO – The Calvin men’s soccer team traveled to Kalamazoo looking for its fourth consecutive conference win.  In a match up of the two teams tied for first place, the Knights blanked the Hornets 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.  Calvin improves to 6-3, 4-1 in conference play.  Both teams were deadlocked at zero for the first 40 minutes.  Senior Joe Broekhuizen scored two goals in as many minutes to give Calvin a 2-0 lead going into the break.  Kalamazoo nearly got on the board ten minutes into the second half.  Jared Georgakopoulos ripped a shot that got by Calvin keeper Jared Rushlau.  Luckily for the Knights, the ball found the crossbar.  Ten minutes later, junior Zach Willis found the net for the Knights, putting them up 3-0.  In the 83rd minutes, a pair of substitutes scored a minute apart.  Senior Mike Sanderson and freshmen Sam Hanover scored their first goals of the season.The Knights outshot the Hornets 17-13.  Calvin senior Jared Rushlau was credited with the shutout.

Calvin Cross Country Runners Compete at Loyola Lakefront Invitational

CHICAGO, IL - A group of Calvin men’s and women’s cross country athletes competed at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday. In the men’s race, Calvin took 14th. In the women’s race, Calvin took 20th.In the men’s race, the top finisher for Calvin was senior Kevin Peterson in 66th place (26:20) while junior Philip Spitzer was 74th. Rounding out Calvin’s top seven were junior Gabe Gunnink in 108th, sophomore Josh Ferguson in 112th (26:45) freshman Matt Oram in 116th (26:55), sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven in 120th (26:58) and sophomores Stephen Tubergen in 123rd (26:59) and Steven Haagsma in 125th (27:00). Junior Alex VanHaitsma also took 130th (27:04).In the women’s race, sophomore Kate Ardinger was Calvin’s top finisher, placing 76th (18:49). Sophomore Lydia Peterson was 131st (19:19) and sophomore Paige McGahan 138th (19:22). Sophomore Lizzy Vannette was 157th (19:33) and senior Hannah Kregel 178th (19:45). Senior Kaylea Brase also took 184th (19:47).

Calvin Women’s Golf Team Takes Second Place at the Calvin/Hope Division III Challenge

HOLLAND - The Calvin women’s golf team took second place at the two-day Calvin/Hope Division III Challenge, firing a Saturday round of 340 to finish with a two-day total of 688 strokes. Hope recorded a team score of 317 on Saturday to finish with a two day of of 652 strokes.Friday’s initial 18-hole round was hosted by Calvin at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club while Hope hosted Saturday’s 18-hole round at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club. Calvin junior Carlia Canto had a 75 on Saturday to take first place in the final tournament standings as she carded a round of 80 on Friday.  Senior Elise Doezema picked up the pace on Saturday with a round of 83 after shooting 91 on Friday.

Women’s Soccer Defeats Adrian 3-1 - Extends Win Streak to Four Games

After an early conference season loss to the Scots of Alma, the women’s soccer team has been rolling as of late, winning three straight contests while outscoring it’s opponents 11-0. The Knights looked to continue that streak when it hosted the Adrian Bulldogs at Zuidema Field. Calvin, scoring three first half goals, did just that as it bottled up last year’s MIAA MVP Sam Barker and the Adrian offense en route to a 3-1 win. Scoring first half goals for Calvin were freshman Paige Capel, junior Danielle Carter and freshman Abigal Ploeg. Calvin held a 22-13 shots at goal advantage in the win. The Knights have now won four games in a row heading into a rivalry showdown at Hope next Wednesday afternoon.

Calvin cross country teams place third at Notre Dame Invitational

NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams had solid performances at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon as the sixth-ranked Calvin men’s team took third in the men’s Gold Division with a team score of 96 points while the eighth-ranked Calvin women’s team was third in the women’s Gold Division with 130 points.

Women’s Golf Team Posts Score of 348 at Calvin-Hope Challenge - Round Two Set for Saturday

ADA - The first 18-hole round of the 36-hole Calvin-Hope Challenge is in the books and the visiting Flying Dutch of Hope have jumped out to a quick lead, recording a team score of 335 Friday afternoon at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. Calvin carded a team score of 348.The top individual finisher on Friday was Calvin junior Carlia Canto with a round of 80.In addition to Canto’s score, Calvin picked up an 85 from freshman Sarah Arendsen while senior Elise Doezema had a 91, freshman Jennie Poole a 92 and freshman Casey Harkema a 94.

Men’s Golf Takes Fourth at MIAA Jamboree - Remains in Overall MIAA Lead

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s golf remains in sole possession of first place in the overall season MIAA standings but the race has tightened up. Calvin entered Thursday’s MIAA Jamboree at Trine University’s Zollner Golf Club with a 22-stroke lead but host Trine narrowed the gap with a first place total of 288 strokes. Calvin was fourth with 297 strokes while Hope took second (291) and Adrian third (294). Calvin’s top golfer on Thursday was junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 72 that was good for a seventh place tie individually. Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 74 while senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a 75. Junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and sophomore James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) both had rounds of 76.

Women’s Soccer Claims 1-0 OT Win at Saint Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women’s soccer team moved to 5-2-0 overall and to 4-1-0 in the MIAA with a 1-0 sudden-death overtime victory at Saint Mary’s College Thursday afternoon. Junior midfielder Danielle Carter rifled in a shot three minutes into overtime for the game-winning score. Junior Heidi Scholten was credited with an assist on the play. Calvin outshot Saint Mary’s 21-5. Junior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn was credited with the shutout for Calvin. Calvin will host Adrian on Saturday at noon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

Volleyball Remains On Top of MIAA Standings With Win at Saint Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, IN – Calvin improved to 14-1 overall and to 7-0 in the MIAA with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-16 victory at Saint Mary’s College.Ranked second nationally, Calvin hit .427 as a team as it remained on top of the MIAA standings at the midpoint of the league schedule. Senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had another big match with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .583. Freshman Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had nine kills while senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had eight kills.
