Coming off of an 8-1 win against the Trine Thunder earlier in the week, the Calvin College men’s tennis team played host to the Britons of Albion College Saturday afternoon at Strikwerda Tennis Center. The result proved to be the same, as Calvin knocked off the Britons 8-1 to improve to 5-5 (2-0 MIAA) on the year. Calvin swept the all three doubles flights. Juniors Preston Phillips and Phil Reinkin defeated David Richter and Tucker Blake 8-3. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson nipped Danny Frank and Bill Sessions 9-7. Jarrod Brower and Vashan Wright defeated Brandon Kosinski and Steven Nawrocki 8-2.

After a pair of tough losses against St. Mary’s on Thursday in its conference opener, Calvin opened up its home portion of the conference schedule Saturday against Albion in a doubleheader. Albion took both games from the Knights, winning 3-0 and 3-1.Calvin now looks forward to Wednesday when it will travel to Trinity Christian College to face the Trolls in a pair of non-conference games.

OXFORD, OH - A group of Calvin distance runners had big performance at the Miami University Invitational Friday night in the 5,000 meters.In the women’s 5,000 meters, senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Christian HS) took first place with a time of 17:18.65 while sophomore Nicole Michermhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took fourth with a career-best time of 17:40.12. The time by Hoekstra is the fourth-fastest in NCAA III outdoor women’s track and field this spring while the time by Michmerhuizen is the ninth-fastest. On the men’s side, senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) took second in the (men’s) 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 14:35.22 while junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) was third (14:46.90).The time by Kerr is the fastest in NCAA III men’s outdoor track and field this spring while the time by VanderRoest is the third-fastest. A small group of Calvin runners will continue to compete at the Miami Invitational on Saturday while the bulk of Calvin’s track and field athletes will compete at the All-American Invitational hosted by Adrian College.

The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Kalamazoo Friday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin claimed the opener 7-3 and then fell 11-2 in game two. In the opener, Calvin jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to see Kalamazoo tie the game 3-3 in the fifth. Calvin then mounted a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a three-run RBI triple by junior Ben Cok. Sophomore Cory Laster was able to come on in relief to gain the save. In game two, Calvin’s pitching staff issued eight walks as the Hornets scored three runs in the second and seven runs in the third to grab a commanding 10-0 lead. Calvin came up with two runs late in the game and broke up a no-hit bid by Kalamazoo pitcher Tommy Carion in the process. The two teams are back in action on Saturday in Kalamazoo for a doubleheader slated to start at Stryker Stadium.

NOTRE DAME, IN – Calvin suffered a pair of hard-luck defeats at Saint Mary’s Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 7-5 in the MIAA opening games for the Knights. In game one, Saint Mary’s (15-7 overall, 2-2 MIAA) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the win. Calvin had two runners aboard in the sixth but could not score. In the top of the seventh, Calvin placed runners on first and third with one out but again failed to score. In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Mary’s used a single, a Calvin error and then a double to bring home the game-winning run. Sophomore Lina Avila (2-7) took the loss, striking out two and walking one while scattering six hits. In game two, Calvin (5-13 overall, 0-2 MIAA) and Saint Mary’s were tied 4-4 headed into the fifth inning but the host Belles scored three times in the top of the fifth to build a 7-4 lead and never looked back. Freshman Trista Brownlee (3-7) took the loss for Calvin. Calvin had six hits in defeat including two off the bat of freshman Catherine Hillbrands.Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

HOLLAND, Mich – The Calvin women’s golf team tied for third place at the Hope Invitational Thursday afternoon at the Ravines Golf Club with a team score of 356 strokes. Calvin tied host Hope for third place with Olivet winning with a score of 332 while Aquinas was second (352). Rochester College placed fifth with a score of 410 strokes. Calvin’s top individual was sophomore Carlia Canto with a round of 82 while junior Elise Doezema had an 89 and junior Rachel Whitaker a 92. Freshman Jaclyn Richert had a 93 and freshman Laura Richert a 101. Calvin is back in action on April 17 when it competes at the first 18-hole MIAA Tournament round. Hope College will serve as host that afternoon.

The Knights took a convincing dual match against conference foe Trine, sweeping the doubles flights and winning the five of the six singles flights. In the doubles portion of the match, the Knights went undefeated in almost uncontested fashion. Jarrod Brower and Vashan Wright, the third doubles team, defeated their Trine counterparts 8-0 and Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson, the second doubles squad, nearly matched their teammates, winning 8-1. Calvin’s first doubles pair of Preston Phillips and Phillip Reinken defeated Trine’s Joe Dunbar and Dan Desper 8-6. The Knights are now 4-5 overall and square off against Albion on Saturday.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin College women’s tennis team dueled the Britons from Albion College long past sunset. The match was tied at 4-4 with only one flight, fourth singles, still on the court. With freshmen Samantha Reitsma holding a 3-2 advantage in the third set, the match was moved to nearby athletic club MVP. It was Sarah Towler that prevailed in the marathon match of over four hours winning the third set tiebreak 10-8.The loss drops Calvin to 3-10 (1-2 MIAA) on the year. The Knights return to action when they take on the Comets of Olivet College April 10 at Strikweda Tennis Center.

For the second consecutive week, the Calvin men’s outdoor track and field team is ranked sixth in the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association’s Division III Top 25 poll. The Calvin men are also ranked eighth in the Great Lakes Regional poll. The Calvin women’s outdoor track and field team has dropped out of the Top 25 poll after being ranked 24th a week ago. The Knights are ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Regional poll. Both teams return to action on Saturday, competing at the Adrian College All-American Invitational with a group of distance runners also competing at an invitational hosted by the University of Miami of Ohio.

Calvin evened its MIAA record to 1-1 with a 6-3 victory over visiting Alma Monday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. Calvin (3-9 overall) took two of the three doubles points to gain early control.Claiming doubles victories for the Knights were junior Elise Doezema and sophomore Bethany Zoerhof at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Lauren Schlagenhauf and junior Jordan Ipema at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Megan Visser then claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, Ipema was a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 winner at No. 3 singles, Doezema a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 5 singles and freshman Ali Roode a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 6 singles. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m. at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
