OLIVET - Calvin stretched its win streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep at Olivet Tuesday afternoon, winning by scores of 3-0 and 8-0. Calvin’s current six-game win streak is its longest since 2004 when the Knights ripped off an eight-game win streak. Calvin is now 11-15 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA heading into a Thursday home doubleheader against rival Hope at 3:30 p.m.Calvin received stellar pitching performances in both of its victories over Olivet Tuesday. In game one, sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) tossed her first collegiate shutout, scattering five hits, striking out two and walking none in seven innings of work. In game two, Avila tossed her second consecutive shutout as she limited the Comets to three hits in a game that lasted just five innings due to the mercy-rule. Avila struck out three and walked just one in upping her season record to 6-7 on the year.

NOTRE DAME, IN - Calvin remained in the thick of the MIAA Tournament hunt with an important 6-3 conference dual match victory at Saint Mary’s Monday afternoon. Calvin is now 5-11 overall and more importantly 3-2 in the MIAA which places the Knights in a tie for third place in the league standings with Kalamazoo. The top four teams in the final MIAA regular season standings will advance to the four-team MIAA Tournament later this month. Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Adrian for a 1 p.m. conference match.

PIERSON - The Calvin men’s golf team posted a second place team finish at its own Knight Invite Monday afternoon at the Pilgrim’s Run Golf Club with a team score of 331 strokes. Playing in gale-force wind conditions and at times, driving rain, Calvin finished two strokes behind tournament champion Cornerstone and four strokes ahead of third place Trinity Christian College. The tournament field included 10 teams.Sophomore Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led Calvin with an 80 that placed him in a tie for third place individually. Sophomore Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also cracked the top 10, tying for sixth place individually with a round of 81.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named its Athletes of the Week in track and field for the week ending April 15. For the second time this year, Calvin junior Aaron Meckes has been named the MIAA Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. Meckes, a junior from Bay City (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS), won the shot put and the discus at the MIAA Jamboree. Meckes had a toss of 51 feet, 7 inches in the shot put and a throw of 159 feet, 8 inches in the discus, second-best in NCAA Division III this season. Meckes is being honored as Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.

ALBION - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams face an uphill climb in a quest to continue MIAA Championship streaks. Both teams took second place behind rival Hope at the MIAA Jamboree Saturday at Albion College. In the men’s meet, Hope took first place with 898 points to Calvin’s 784. On the women’s side, Hope edged Calvin with 910.5 points with the Knights tallying 897.5 points. The MIAA Jamboree is worth one-half of the final MIAA crown. The remaining half consists of the results of the MIAA Field Day. Calvin will host the MIAA Field Day May 3 and 4. Heading into this season, the Calvin men’s track and field team has captured at least a share of 18 consecutive MIAA titles. On the women’s side, Calvin has captured at least a share of 22 consecutive MIAA titles. The women’s streak is the longest active championship streak in MIAA women’s athletics history.

The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to 7-7 on the year with a 5-1 victory over Oberlin College Saturday morning at the MIAA/North Coast Challenge. The match was played indoors because of inclement weather and was played to decision because of time constraints. Calvin took two of the three doubles points with juniors Preston Phillips and Philip Reinken winning 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and senior Vashan Wright and junior Jarrod Brower winning 9-8 at No. 3 doubles. Calvin then clinched the wins with victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Phillips was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles, Reinken a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 winner at No. 3 singles and Peterson a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 4 singles. Phillips and Reinken are now 6-2 together in doubles action while Peterson upped his season singles mark to 10-5. Phillips also hit the double-digit mark for singles wins this year, improving his season mark to 10-7. Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 4 p.m. match.

Coming off a pair of wins against non-conference opponent Trinity Christian College, the Knights were looking to keep their momentum rolling against Kalamazoo College as they hosted the Hornets on an overcast Saturday afternoon. Calvin kept the momentum rolling, sweeping the Hornets, winning by scores of 10-1 and 9-0. The Calvin sweep moves its record to 9-15 overall and 2-4 in MIAA play. The Hornets drop to 2-20 and 1-9 in conference. Calvin is next in action on Tuesday when they will travel to Olivet to play the Comets with the doubleheader starting at 3:30 pm.

The Knights lost the first end of Saturday’s doubleheader against conference power Adrian by a score of 8-2. In spite of the lopsided final score, the Knights controlled a majority of the game. Sophomore Jeff Victor was on the mound for Calvin and, through his 5.2 innings, Victor had the Bulldog bats on their heels. In game two, Calvin was defeated 10-3. Calvin trailed 5-2 heading into the fifth before Adrian mounted a late surge to pull away. With the sweep, Adrian stays atop the MIAA with a 21-6 overall record and a 14-2 mark in conference. The result moves Calvin to 10-16 and 5-11 in conference.

OBERLIN, OH - The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of matches at the MIAA/North Coast Challenge hosted by Oberlin College Friday. Calvin opened play with an 8-1 loss to regionally-ranked DePauw. The Knights then came back to top Ohio Wesleyan 9-0 Friday afternoon. The Knights are now 6-7 on the year.In the loss to DePauw (12-4), ranked eighth in the most recent set of regional rankings, Calvin’s lone point came from its No. 1 doubles team of juniors Preston Phillips and Philip Reinken as the duo claimed an 8-3 win. Against Ohio Wesleyan (6-10 overall), Calvin took all three doubles points with Phillips and Reinken winning 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, junior Brian DeMaagd and sophomore Loukas Peterson winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles and senior Vashan Wright and junior Jarrod Brower winning 9-8 at No. 3 doubles.In singles, DeMaagd claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles while Phillips was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. singles. Reinken claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, Peterson a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles and Brower an 0-6, 6-0, 10-3 win at No. 5 singles. Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces Oberlin College at 9 a.m.

ADRIAN - The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Adrian College Thursday afternoon, falling by scores of 16-4 and 6-0. The Knights are now 10-14 overall and 5-9 in the MIAA. Calvin had seven hits in defeat including a solo homerun by junior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the fourth. Cok went 2-for-4 in the loss. Sophomore catcher Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian HS) also went 2-for-3 with a run scored in defeat. In game two, Calvin matched Adrian with seven hits but the Knights stranded nine baserunners. Adrian meanwhile, scored two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth.Freshman Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) went 2-for-3 for the Knights with a double. The two teams will resume the four-game series at Calvin on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
