The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Alma Monday afternoon at Calvin Field, falling 3-2 in game one and 8-5 in game two. The Knights now stand alone in eighth place in the MIAA standings at 5-13. Game one went to extra innings as the Scots blooped a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh to tie the game and then took the lead in the top of the eight. Calvin had the tying run on third and the winning run on second in the bottom of the eighth but could not deliver across either baserunner. Sophomore Cory Laster took the loss. In game two, Calvin gave up seven runs in the second inning to fall behind early but mounted a late comeback effort that fell just short. Sophomore Jeff Victor took the loss for the Knights. The two teams are back in action on Tuesday at Calvin Field in a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.

ALLENDALE – The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Al Owens Classic Friday and Saturday. Highlights for the Calvin women included sophomore Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) clocking a season-best time of 12.80 in the 100 meter dash, senior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) recording a season-best time of 2:17.35 in the 800 meter dash while sophomore Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) also had a season-best time of 2.18.78.In the men’s competition, sophomore Matt Christians (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) was second second in the high jump (6-4 ¾) and junior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was fourth in the shot put (52-4 ½). His throw was a season (outdoor) best and places him 17th on the current NCAA III performance list. Both Calvin teams will now prepare for a busy slate of action next weekend as a group of athletes will compete at the Lyle Bennett Invitational on April 27 while another group will compete at the Hillsdale Gina Relays April 26-28.

ADRIAN – Calvin improved to 6-11 overall and to 4-2 in the MIAA with a 7-2 conference dual match win at Adrian Saturday afternoon. The Knights are currently in fourth place in the MIAA standings and have now clinched a spot in the upcoming four-team MIAA Tournament. Calvin has remaining regular season league matches against Hope (April 24) and against Trine (April 28). The MIAA Tournament is slated to start on May 3 at the site of the MIAA regular season champion. Calvin is two wins ahead of Alma (4-4) but holds a head-to-head tiebreaker edge over Alma for a league tournament spot.

The Calvin men’s tennis team concluded play in its own Calvin Flighted Singles Invitational Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Center and the Zandee Tennis Center at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Calvin junior Phil Reinken won the “B” singles flight despite struggling in the semi final match. He defeated Hope’s Kyle Kreps 6-7(4), 7-6(2), 10-7. The final match was much more straightforward. Rienken downed David Murray of Trine 7-5, 6-1. Vashan Wright won the “C” singles flight for Calvin defeating Alma’s Ben Schippers 6-3, 6-1 before beating Cody Herbuck of Hope 7-5, 6-3 in the final. Calvin freshmen John Strikwerda made a name for himself by winning the “D” singles flight. In the semifinal match, Strikwerda defeated Alma’s Phil Ryskamp 6-2, 6-0 and then Matt Culver of Hope in the final 6-4, 6-3. In the “A” doubles flight, four Calvin Knights played in the consolation final. Phillips and Reinken defeated DeMaagd and Peterson 8-5.In the “B” singles flight, Vashan Wright and Jarrod Brower edged out Bussies and Culver of Hope 9-8(4) to win the flight.Calvin will return to action when it plays host to rival Hope College Wednesday at Strikwerda Tennis Center.

Coming off a pair of tough losses to the Flying Dutch of Hope, the Knights looked to regather themselves and possibly pull off an upset against the MIAA-leading Thunder of Trine. Calvin’s upset bid came up short however as the Knights were defeated 10-0 and 9-2. For Calvin in game one, freshman Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) was 2-for-2 in game one while senior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), on senior day, was 2-for-3. Sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) took the loss in the circle for the Knights.VanderMeer, Avila, freshman Catherine Hilbrands, junior Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), and freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) all recorded a hit in game two for the Knights. Prins scored two runs on two walks for Calvin. Brownlee took the loss in the circle while sophomore Danae Miedema (Jenison/Covenant Christian HS) pitched four innings in relief. Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts non-conference opponent Goshen at 3:30 pm.

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin Flighted Invitational ended its first day of competition Friday. The first day of competition was held at Hope College due to weather. Each Calvin flight was in action for at least one match. Calvin had two players competing in each flight of singles. Starting off with ‘’A” singles flight, junior Preston Phillips defeated Josh Grove of Alma 6-4, 7-5 as well as Brian DeMaagd defeating Dan Desper of Trine 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. At “B” singles, junior Phil Reinkin defeated Joey Clark of Trine 6-3, 6-3 and Jarrod Brower was defeated by Gabe Gasher 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Nick Ihrie defeated Tom Griffin of Calvin 6-3, 6-4 at “C” singles as well as Vashan Wright of Calvin defeating Joe Panzer of Hope 6-4, 6-4. John Strikwerda defeated Dan Owens of Hope 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Stephen Healy lost to Matt Culver 7-5, 6-2. Both Knight teams in “A” flight doubles went 1-1 on the day. This will force a matchup of the two Calvin teams tomorrow morning. In the “B” flight of doubles, Calvin has one team team playing for the championship. Brower and Wright will face Bussies/Culver.

On a six-game win streak, the Knights looked to continue their strong defense against the rival Dutch of Hope College. Calvin’s win streak came to an end however as the Knights were swept by Hope by scores of 11-3 and 9-6. In game one, Hope scored six runs in the top of the first to take control. Senior Marie Prins and junior Hannah DeWeerd both homered in the loss. In game two, Calvin grabbed a 5-2 lead on a three-run double by DeWeerd in the fifth and then held a 6-4 lead in the sixth. Hope rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth however to pull away for the win. Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Trine at 1 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.

WEST OLIVE - The Calvin women’s golf team produced a team score of 384 strokes Tuesday afternoon at the first MIAA spring qualifying tournament. Tuesday’s tournament was hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club and was the first of three rounds that consist of the MIAA’s spring tournament that determines the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.Only the top four teams from the MIAA fall regular season standings are eligible to compete for the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Championships.In Tuesday’s competition, Adrian joined Saint Mary’s, Olivet, Hope and Calvin as a non-eligible team for the automatic bid.Saint Mary’s took a commanding lead in the MIAA spring tournament standings with a round of 324 Tuesday. The Belles took third in the MIAA regular season standings this fall.Olivet posted a second place score of 345 Tuesday while Hope was third (350), Adrian fourth (non AQ eligible) at 376 and Calvin fifth (384). Calvin’s top two golfers on Tuesday were sophomore Carlia Canto with an 86 and freshman Jaclyn Richert with a 90. Canto finished in eighth place individually while Richert tied for 12th place.The MIAA spring tournament will conclude with a 36-hole weekend tournament on April 27 and 28 at the Medalist Golf Club with MIAA regular season champion Olivet serving as host.

ADRIAN - Calvin broke the .500 mark on the year with a 9-0 win at Adrian Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Knights are tied for second place in the MIAA standings with Hope.Claiming doubles wins were juniors Preston Phillips and Philip Reinken (No. 1), junior Brian DeMaagd and sophomore Loukas Peterson (No. 2 ) and sophomore John Strikwerda and sophomore Stephen Healy (No. 3). Singles winners included DeMaagd (No. 1), Phillips (No. 2), Reinken (No. 3), Peterson (No. 4), freshman Tom Griffin (No. 5) and Strikwerda (No. 6). Peterson is now 11-5 in singles play this season while Phillips is 11-7 and Reinken 10-7.

The Knights’ record fell to 10-17 after a 7-4 non-conference loss to Davenport on Tuesday. Calvin collected 15 hits in the loss. Freshman Grant VanPutten led the way by going 4-for-4 at the plate while junior Tyler Tos, junior Ben Cok, junior Drew Vos and sophomore Steve VanderMolen all had two hits apiece. Sophomore Grant VanderWall took the loss to fall to 2-5 on the year. Calvin is back in action on Friday when it travels to Alma for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader at Klenk Park.
