Lambers and Schepers Combine on No-Hitter to Lead Calvin Doubleheader Sweep of Albion

Joe Lambers and Nate Schepers combined for a no-hitter on Friday, helping Calvin to a 6-2 victory over Albion on Friday. The no-hitter is the first by Calvin in an MIAA contest. A senior at Calvin, Lambers pitched the first five innings, striking out eight and walking two, while Schepers (Holland Christian HS), a freshman, came on to pitch the final two innings, walking one batter. The no-hitter was the 26th in an MIAA game since 1958 and the first since Hope’s Derek Fairchild tossed a no-no against Albion in 2009. It is also the first combined no-hitter recorded since 1958. Calvin then came back to win 11-3 in game two behind a 12-hit attack. Freshman Grant Van Putten (Holland Christian HS), senior Scott Tipton (Stow, OH), freshman Ben Wohl (Canton, Mich.) and junior Drew Vos (Grand Rapids Christian HS) all had two hits apiece. Schepers came on in relief of sophomore starter Grant Vander Wall to gain the win to run his season record to 4-2.

Calvin Comes From Behind To Claim 5-4 Win Over Hope in Men’s Tennis

In a match that spanned two days, the Calvin men’s tennis team came from behind to claim a 5-4 victory over rival Hope Thursday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. The match began on Wednesday with Hope claiming two of the three doubles points but rain suspended play late Wednesday afternoon, moving the bulk of singles competition to Thursday. Calvin then claimed four of the six singles flights to come-from-behind for the win. Junior Jarrod Brower came up with the clinching point, winning a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 match at No. 5 singles that gave the Knights an insurmountable 5-3 lead. Other singles winners for Calvin included junior Preston Phillips (No. 2), sophomore Loukas Peterson (No. 4) and senior Vashan Wright (No. 6). With the win, Calvin (4-1 MIAA) also clinches the number-two seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament.

Softball Goes Extra Innings Twice at Alma - Avila Breaks Calvin Single-Season HR Mark

ALMA - The softball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in nine innings in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Scots Park. In game one, Calvin sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) cranked her 11th home run of the season - allowing her to establish a new Calvin single-season record for home runs, breaking the previous record of 10 set by Abby Konyndyk in 2005. Alma scored single runs in the third and sixth to tie the game and then used a pair of hits and a Calvin error in the ninth to claim the win. Avila took the loss for the Knights. In game two, Calvin and Alma battled to a 0-0 tie through eight innings before darkness swept in. The game has been suspended. The game has been suspended. Whether the game will be resumed has not yet been determined. Both teams had chances to win late. Calvin had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but could not drive home the winning run. In the top of the eighth, Alma loaded the bases with one out but Calvin starting pitcher Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was able to get out the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.

Calvin/Hope Men’s Tennis Match Suspended by Rain - Will Resume On Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The Calvin/Hope men’s tennis match was suspended on Wednesday because of rain. The match was suspended after doubles play with Hope holding a 2-1 lead and singles play just underway. The match will resume at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (April 26) at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Albion

ALBION - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Albion on Wednesday, falling by scores of 3-0 and 4-3. Sophomore Cory Laster (Ludington HS) got the start for Calvin and took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year. Calvin had six players gain a hit including a double by sophomore Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian HS). In game two, freshman Tom Bouwkamp (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin in relief of sophomore starter Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS). Bouwkamp is 0-2 on the year. Junior Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH/Southview HS) had a pair of hits for Calvin including a double.The two teams are back in action on Friday with a doubleheader at Calvin scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Carissa Verkaik Named to BCAM Women’s College Academic All-State Team

Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) College Academic All-State team. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is receiving BCAM Academic All-State honors for the first time. The 2011-12 MIAA Player of the Year, Verkaik averaged 19 points and 8.9 rebounds during her junior season. This past season, Verkaik was named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-American 3rd team. She has also been a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Verkaik carries a 3.67 GPA and is majoring in elementary education. Other members of the BCAM Academic All-State Women’s College Team include Maria Blazejewski of Lake Superior State, Patty Rewa of Albion, Melissa Veltkamp of Cornerstone and Bethany Watterworth of Oakland.

Softball Sweeps Goshen - Avila Goes Deep Twice - Matches Calvin Single-Season HR Mark

Facing non-conference opponent Goshen College for the third straight season, the Knights looked to break a four game losing streak against the visiting Maple Leafs. Calvin did just that, handing Goshen a 5-3 defeat in game one and then coming back for a 9-0 win in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep. Sophomore Lina Avila belted a home run in both games, raising her season total to 10 and matching the Calvin single-season home run record originally established by Abby Konyndyk in 2005. Avila also claimed the win in game one in the pitcher’s circle while freshman Trista Brownlee got the win in game two.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Alma

The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Alma on Tuesday, winning the opener 4-2 before falling 4-1 in game two. Alma took three of the four games in the series. In Tuesday’s opener, sophomore Grant VanderWall went the distance to pick up the win. VanderWall went the distance to pick up his third win of the season. VanderWall struck out five and scattered five hits in seven innings of work. Freshman Grant VanPutten had a pair of hits while Kyle Spoelma went 3-for-3. In game two, senior Joe Lambers took the loss, falling to 3-4 on the year. Freshman Spencer Schuiling had two of Calvin’s five hits in the loss. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 2 p.m. twinbill.

Women’s Tennis Defeated by Hope

HOLLAND - Calvin dropped an 8-1 decision to league-leading Hope Tuesday afternoon at Holland Christian High School. The loss drops Calvin to 6-12 overall and to 4-3 in the MIAA. Calvin will close out its MIAA regular season on Saturday when it hosts Trine at 1 p.m. In the loss to Hope on Saturday, Calvin battled the Flying Dutch on fairly even terms in doubles play, losing all three points but losing by scores of 8-6 (No. 1), 8-5 (No. 2) and 8-4 (No. 3). Hope (15-7 overall, 7-0 MIAA) then took control in singles play, winning the top five singles flights including four flights where Calvin won just a combined seven games. Calvin’s lone win came from freshman Ali Roode (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) at No. 6 singles as she claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win to boost her season record to 15-3 in singles play.

Aaron Meckes Once Again Named MIAA Field Athlete of Week in Track & Field

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its Athletes of the Week in track and field for meets through April 21. Trineís Tyler Bourdo (men) and Adrianís Kelsea Sellers (women) have been named the MIAAís Track Athletes of the Week while Calvinís Aaron Meckes (men) and Adrianís Megan Meier (women) have been selected as Field Athletes of the Week. Meckes, a junior from Bay City (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS), placed fourth in the shot put at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State with a toss of 52 feet, 4-1/2 inches. He is currently ranked first in the MIAA in the shot put. Meckes is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row and third time this season.
