Men’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season With 8-1 Loss to Spring Arbor

EAST LANSING - The Calvin men’s tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat to Spring Arbor University Monday afternoon in a match played indoors at the Michigan State Indoor Courts. The loss drops Calvin to 10-8 overall heading into a Thursday MIAA Tournament semifinal match against rival Hope. Calvin’s lone point on Monday came from sophomore Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) at No. 5 singles as he fought his way to a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win. Peterson is now 14-5 on the season. Calvin’s match against Hope on Thursday is slated to start at 4 p.m. at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Softball Drops Game One of DH at Adrian 5-3 - Second Game Postponed Until Tuesday

ADRIAN - The Calvin softball team dropped the opener of a doubleheader at Adrian Monday afternoon 5-3. The second game was postponed until May 1 because of rain. Tuesday’s single game will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will the season finale for the Knights. In Monday’s first game, Calvin received two home runs from sophomore Lina Avila but Adrian scored four runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to pull ahead. Avila put Calvin on the board in the first with a two-run homer - her 12th of the season to give Calvin a 2-0 lead. Adrian countered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Avila then smashed a solo home run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3. Calvin then loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth but could not score again. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the bottom half to close out the scoring. Avila and senior Marie Prins had two hits apiece for the Knights with Avila driving in three runs to bring her season RBI total to 38 - matching a Calvin single-season record. Avila’s home run total of 13 is also a Calvin single-season record.

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Teams Compete at the Lyle Bennett Invite

MT. PLEASANT - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Lyle Bennett Invitational hosted by Central Michigan University on Saturday.Sophomore Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had a strong day in the sprints for the Calvin women, posting a time of 12.86 in the 100 meters and a time of 26.18 in the 200 meters. Sophomore Hillary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) had a busy day, placing second in the triple jump (35-3) and eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.73). The field events were a strength for the Calvin men as junior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was third in the shot put (52-4 3/4), senior Justin Kremers (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) was third in the javelin (161-1) and sophomore Matt Christians fifth in the high jump (6-2 3/4). The Calvin track and field teams will now prepare to host the MIAA Field Day May 3 and 4.

Men’s Golf Takes Second at Bill Gettig Invitational

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s golf team closed out a strong spring season, placing second at the Bill Gettig Invitational hosted by Trine University Saturday afternoon. Calvin posted a five-player score of 387. Host Trine took first place with a five-player team score of 376. Calvin’s spring season included two tournament titles (Sunshine Invitational & Furniture City Classic), two runner-up finishes (Knight Invite and Bill Gettig Invite) and a third place finish (Vic Cuiss Invite).In Saturday’s competition, freshman James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) continued his stellar spring with a round of 73 that was good for second place individually. Sophomore Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was close behind in third place with a score of 74. Sophomore Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with a round of 78 (tie for 16th) while junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 80 (23rd) and freshman Jonathan Cook (Muskegon/Western Michigan Christian HS) an 82.

Women’s Golf Places Fourth at MIAA Spring Tournament Round Number-Three

MARSHALL - The Calvin women’s golf team took fourth at the third and final MIAA spring tournament round of the season. Calvin posted a team score of 353 at Saturday’s 18-hole round hosted by Olivet at the Medalist Golf Club. The Knights finish fourth in the final MIAA spring tournament standings with a 54-hole total of 1,091 strokes. In Saturday’s round, freshman Jackie Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin with a round of 82 that was good for a tie for fifth place individually. Sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was Calvin’s second best finisher with a round of 86 that tied her for 13th. Junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with an 87 (tie for 15th) while junior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) rounded out Calvin’s finishers with a round of 98 (23rd place). This spring marked Calvin’s first-ever appearance in the MIAA’s four-team spring tournament that is used to determine the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.

Men’s Tennis Defeats Alma in Regular Season Finale - Hits Double-Digit Plateau for Wins

The Calvin men’s tennis team secured a 9-0 victory at Alma Saturday afternoon. The Knights finish the regular season with an overall mark of 10-7 and a second place conference mark of 5-1. It marks the 10th consecutive year that the Calvin men’s tennis team has reached the double-digit plateau in victories. In finishing second in the MIAA regular season standings, Calvin receives the second seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament. Calvin will host a semifinal match against third-seeded Hope next Thursday. Kalamazoo is the top seed for the four-team tournament. Juniors Phil Reinken and Preston Phillips both claimed singles victories while sophomore Loukas Peterson and junior Jarrod Brower also had singles wins. Reinken and Phillips are now both 14-8 in singles play this year while Peterson is 13-5 and Brower 12-8.

Women’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season With 7-2 Win Over Trine

With fourth place in the MIAA all wrapped up for the conference tournament, the Knights looked to finish off their regular season with a win as they hosted Trine Saturday afternoon at the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center.  Calvin did just that, defeating the visiting Thunder 7-2. The 7-2 win moves the Knights MIAA record to 5-3 and their overall record to 7-12. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Tournament where it will face first-seeded Hope, who is 8-0 in conference, in the opening round next week Thursday. The Knights lost their regular season match against Hope 8-1.

Track & Field Athletes Run Wild at Hillsdale Gina Relays - Records for Hoekstra & Kramer

HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s distance runners ran wild at the Hillsdale Gina Relays Thursday and Friday night. On Friday night, Calvin runners established school records in both the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter run. In the women’s Invite 5,000 meters Friday night, senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took first place with a time of 16:40.25. Her time shatters the previous Calvin record of 16:54.20 set by Betsy Haverkamp in 1997. Hoekstra’s time is also the second-fastest time in Division III women’s track and field this spring. On the men’s side, senior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) shattered the Calvin men’s 5K record with a time of 14:12.39. Kramer’s time surpasses the previous Calvin mark of 14:22.56 set by Jed Christiansen in 2009. Kramer took second in Friday night’s Invite race behind Thomas Breitbach of Wisconsin-Eau Claire who took first in a time of 14:09.60. Kramer’s time is the fourth-best in Division III men’s track and field this spring.

MARSHALL - The second 18-hole round of the MIAA (54 hole) Spring Tournament took place on Friday at the Medalist Golf Club with Olivet College serving as host. Calvin placed fourth on Friday with a team score of 354 strokes. The Knights remain in fourth place in the overall spring tournament standings with one 18 hole round left to be played on Saturday. Junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Jackie Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin with rounds of 84 that was good for a tie for eighth place. Sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was close ehind with an 85 that placed her in a tie for 10th place. Junior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) closed out Calvin’s finishers with a round of 101. Hope took first place on Friday with a team score of 330 while Saint Mary’s was second (334) and Olivet third (341). Saint Mary’s remains in first place in the overall spring tournament standings with 658 total strokes while Hope is second (680), Olivet third (686) and Calvin fourth (758). The team in first place in the final overall standings at the conclusion of Saturday’s final round will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Softball Wins Suspended Game at Alma 2-1 in 11 Innings For First Win Over Scots Since 2005

ALMA - Calvin picked up its first victory over Alma since 2005 Friday afternoon, defeating the Scots 2-1 in 11 innings. Friday’s game marked the conclusion of a second game of a Wednesday doubleheader that was suspended by darkness after eight innings of play with the game tied 0-0. Calvin scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th with two outs to gain the win. Senior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) drove in the tying run with a double and freshman Catherine Hillbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) drove in the game-winner with a walk-off single. Freshman Trista Brownlee received the win, striking out four in 11 innings of work, upping her season record to 7-10. Prins and Hillbrands both had two hits for the Knights. With the win, Calvin moves into a tie for sixth place in the MIAA standings with Olivet and remains one game ahead of eighth place Albion. Calvin will close out its season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Adrian at 1 p.m.
