Softball Sweeps Twinbill From Centre in Season Opener

DANVILLE, KY – After having a pair of games against Mount St. Joseph canceled on Friday, Calvin came out of the gates with energy on Saturday, sweeping a twinbill from host Centre College. Calvin (2-0) claimed the opener 11-7 and then took the nightcap 6-3. In game one, sophomore Lina Avila belted a grand-slam homerun while freshman Trista Brownlee was credited with the pitching victory. In game two, Avila went the distance in the pitching circle for the Maroon and Gold to close out the sweep.

DANVILLE, KY – The Calvin baseball team opened its season with a 1-2 showing as the Knights played three games on the campus of Centre College on Saturday. Calvin opened the day with a doubleheader split against Defiance College, dropping the opener 6-1 before coming back to take the nightcap 14-2. Calvin then fell in its third and final game of the day, dropping a 10-2 contest to host Centre.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - For the fifth time in school history and for the first time since 2007, the Calvin women’s basketball team is headed to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament.Calvin punched its ticket to the Round of 16 with a scintillating 76-71 second round NCAA III Tournament victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday evening inside Van Noord Arena. Ranked fifth nationally, Calvin (27-1) will face second-ranked Chicago (27-0) in a Round of 16 game next Friday at a site to be announced Sunday. The Calvin/Chicago game will feature a rematch of an NCAA III Tournament game between the two Midwest foes from a year ago that Chicago claimed by a 67-62 score in Grand Rapids.

Track & Field Athletes Compete at North Central College Last-Chance Meet

NAPERVILLE, IL – A group of Calvin men’s and women’s track and field athletes competed at a last-chance meet hosted by North Central College Friday night, hoping to improve performances in order to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.One Calvin athlete who certainly increased his stock on Friday night was junior Matt VanderRoest who took first place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.12. The time puts VanderRoest into the top 10 on the NCAA III indoor qualifying list and puts him in contention for a qualifying berth to next week’s national meet. Senior Dan Kerr was also fifth (14:54.55) and sophomore Sam Kerk seventh (15:06.38).

Playing in the nightcap of two NCAA III Tournament opening round games, the Calvin College Knights faced off against the Wisconsin-Lutheran College Warriors and recorded a 59-47 victory. Calvin will face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a second round game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.The Knights were led on offense by junior and Jostens Trophy nominee Carissa Verkaik, who scored 19 points and added five rebounds. Engelhard scored 14 points to go with five boards, while Julia Hilbrands chipped in seven points and nine rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point Holds Off Franklin 61-58 in First Round NCAA III Tournament Game

Facing off in the opening round of the NCAA III Tournament, the Franklin College Grizzlies played the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, MI, Friday afternoon. In a defensive battle, Wisconsin-Stevens Point came out on top 61-58.The Pointers advance to face either Calvin or Wisconsin-Lutheran in the second round Saturday night at 7:30 pm. The game will be played at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.

Women’s Tennis Drops 8-1 Decision to Aquinas

The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 non-conference decision to Aquinas Thursday afternoon at the Riverview Racquet Club. Calvin’s only point came at No. 6 singles as freshman Alli Roode picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win. Roode is now 4-0 on the year. As a team, Calvin drops to 1-3 on the season with the loss. Calvin returns to action next Friday when it takes on Davenport University in a non-conference match at 6 p.m.

The Calvin women’s basketball team has been selected to host a four-team NCAA III Tournament regional this Friday and Saturday (March 2 and 3) at Van Noord Arena. Calvin (25-1) will face Wisconsin-Lutheran (24-4) College in a first round game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. while the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (23-4) will face Franklin College (25-2) at 5 p.m. in Friday’s opening first round game. Friday’s winning teams will play each other on Saturday in the regional final at 7:30 p.m. (EST). The following is a team-by-team capsule of each of the four teams competing this weekend beginning in alphabetical order.
