BEAVERTON, Ore. — Calvin College junior center Carissa Verkaik has been named the 2012 Women’s DIII News Player of the Year, the publication announced in its April issue.Verkaik led the Knights to a 28-2 overall record while scoring 19.2 points, grabbing 8.8 rebounds and shooting better than 56 percent from the floor per game. She accumulated 13 double-double performances this year, including a 35-point, 12-rebound game against Siena Heights and a 15-point, 19-rebound effort against rival Hope. She earned Player of the Year honors in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Verkaik headlines the 2012 WDIIIN All-American team, where she was joined on the first team by Illinois Wesleyan guard Olivia Lett, Babson’s Nicole Wurdeman, Chicago’s Morgan Herrick and Amherst senior Caroline Stedman. WDIIIN has named a Player of the Year every season since 1994.

MEMPHIS, TN - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up their outdoor campaigns at the Rhodes College Open meet on Saturday. Both teams had strong performances. On the men’s side, Calvin’s distance crew had a strong afternoon, most notably in the 10,000 meter run. Senior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led the way by winning the race in a time of 30:16.42 while junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) was second (30:27.31) and senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) third 30:37.20. The performances are the top three times on the NCAA III outdoor performance list this spring. Calvin had five finishers in the top 10 as sophomore Phillip Spitizer (Kingsley, MI/Buckley HS) was seventh (32:33.09) and junior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) ninth (33:02.25). On the women’s side, Calvin received a second place performance from senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:01.90 with sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was fourth (38:45.34), freshman Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) eighth (40:49.63) and sophomore Hannah Kregel (Iowa City, IA/Iowa City HS) 10th (41:43.31). Hoekstra’s time also places her high above the NCAA III performance list.

Calvin dropped its first two games in Arizona, falling 3-2 to Gustavus Adolphus and 9-0 to Trinity of Texas on Saturday. The Knights are now 2-2 on the year. In the loss to Gustavus Adolphus, sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) belted a two-run homer to gave Calvin a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) tossed a three-hitter but was victimized by errors as the Golden Gusties came back to score three unearned runs to gain the win. In the loss to Trinity, Calvin went hitless as Trinity rolled to the five-inning mercy-rule win. Avila took the loss in the pitcher’s circle. Calvin is back in action on Monday when it faces North Central and Carthage out of the CCIW.

For the third straight year, Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named a D3hoops.com All-American. Verkaik has been named to the D3hoops.com All-America first team. She was also a first team selection in 2011 and a third team choice in 2010. Verkaik has a growing collection of post-season honors as she was named a Division III State Farm All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association last night and a finalist for the State Farm/WBCA Division III Player of the Year award. Last week, she was named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year. She has also been named a Capital One Academic All-American this winter and was a finalist for the Josten’s Trophy. She averaged 19.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game this year for the Knights while also blocking 128 shots, setting a new Calvin single-season record.

Calvin picked up an 8-1 win over Grand Rapids Community College Friday afternoon at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Center. The win will not count on Calvin’s season record however as it did not come against a four-year institution. Calvin swept all three doubles flights and five of the six singles flights to gain the win. Calvin will now prepare to travel to Orlando, Florida. The Knights will compete in a series of matches next week in Orlando including a Monday match against Grinnell College.

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin improved to 3-2 on the year with a pair of victories on Friday. Calvin opened play with a 5-3 win over NAIA Dickinson State and then topped Division III Norwich 14-6. In the win over Dickinson State, senior Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe/Grosse Pointe South HS) picked up the win to up his record to 1-1 on the year. The lanky southpaw went five innings and struck out seven. Sophomore Cory Laster (Ludington/Ludingto HS) later came on to pick up the save in relief. Freshman Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 2-for-4 in the win with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Against Norwich, freshman Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) picked up his first collegiate victory, striking out seven batters in six innings of work. Senior Jake VanAlten went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. On Saturday, Calvin split a doubleheader against defending MIAC champion Hamline, winning game one 11-10 and losing the nightcap 6-2.

Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named a State Farm Division III All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. In addition, she has been named one of two finalists for the State Farm/WBCA Division III Player of the Year Award. Verkaik and Amherst senior guard Caroline Stedman are the two finalists. The winner will be announced during the second annual WBCA Awards Show on Monday, April 2, in Denver. This event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik averaged 19.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game this year. She also blocked 128 shots, establishing a new Calvin single-season record.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Blake Boehm has been named head women’s varsity lacrosse coach at Calvin College. A 2007 Calvin College graduate, Boehm will lead the Calvin women’s lacrosse team into its first varsity season next spring. Boehm has held the head coaching position of the Calvin women’s club lacrosse program since the 2007-08 academic year. He was graduated from Calvin with a degree in exercise science while also holding a minor in biology. Calvin will be making the transition from club to NCAA III varsity status for the 2012-13 academic year and will compete in a full MIAA regular season next spring. The winner of the 2013 MIAA Tournament will also gain an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

On an absolutely beautiful March 13 afternoon, the Calvin men’s tennis program swept Cornerstone 9-0 at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts on Calvin’s campus in its first home match of the season.The Knights will play Grand Rapids Community College Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before heading down to Orlando, FL over spring break and training against a number of DIII schools.

The Calvin softball team is off to a 2-0 start and the Knights are in the midst of preparing for a 10-game stretch of games in Tucson, Arizona, that will begin on March 17 and carry on through March 22. The Calvin Sports Information Office recently caught up with head coach Sharon DeKleine to discuss the upcoming spring break trip as well as the remainder of the 2012 schedule in an online interview. This year’s Calvin team features a youthful look as the team includes one senior, three juniors, three sophomores and 10 freshmen.
