Men’s Tennis Drops Lawrence 9-0 in Spring Break Finale

ORLANDO, FL - Calvin closed out its spring trip with a 9-0 win over Lawrence University. The Knights are now 2-3 on the year. Calvin got off to a quick start, sweeping all three doubles points with Brian DeMaagd and Preston Phillips winning at No. 1 doubles, Phillip Reinken and Loukas Peterson winning at No. 2 doubles and Jarrod Brower and John Strikwerda winning at No. 3 doubles. Picking up singles points for Calvin were DeMaagd (No. 1), Peterson (No. 2), Reinken (No. 3), Phillips (No. 4), Brower (No. 5) and Vashan Wright (No. 6). Calvin is back in action next Tuesday when it hosts Davenport at 4 p.m.

Women’s Tennis Team Defeated by William Smith 9-0

ORLANDO, FL - The women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to William Smith on Thursday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-7 on the year. Calvin closes out its spring trip in Orlando on Friday with a 9 a.m. match against George Fox.

Men’s Golf Takes Opening Round Lead at Sunshine Invitational in Port St. Lucie, FL

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - After one day of competition, Calvin is in first place at the 36-hole Sunshine Invitational. Calvin is one of three teams competing in the two-day invitational. Through 18 holes, Calvin is in first place with a team score of 311 strokes while NESCAC regular season champion Williams is in second place with 317 strokes and Trinity of Connecticut third with 323 strokes. Playing in high wind conditions, Calvin received balanced play led by sophomore Ross Ryzenga with a 75. Junior Ben Kuiper was close behind with a 76 while freshman Jon Cook had a 79. Rounding out Calvin’s team finishers were sophomore Mark Allen with an 81, freshman Michael Wierenga with an 82 and freshman James Van Noord with an 88. Competing as individuals for Calvin were senior Jake DeBoer with an 80, senior Brian Haverdink with an 82, sophomore Jake Hoogstrate with an 82 and sophomore Kory Kiefer with an 88. The tournament concludes with an 18-hole round on Friday and will be played at the nearby Ryder Course.

Women’s Tennis Defeats Hamline 5-4

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin women’s tennis team got back on the winning track with a 5-4 win over Hamline University Wednesday morning. Calvin picked up two points in doubles with Megan Visser and Lauren Schlaugenhauf winning at No. 3 doubles and Megan Visser and Samantha Reitsma winning at No. 1 doubles. Reitsma, Elise Doezema and Ali Roode then closed out the win with singles victories. Calvin is back in action on Thursday when it takes on William Smith College.

Men’s Tennis Nipped by Hamline 5-4 in Orlando

ORLANDO, FL - For the second consecutive day, Calvin suffered a 5-4 loss, this time coming against Hamline University. Calvin held a 4-2 lead but Hamline came back to claim singles wins at #2, #3 and #5 singles to pull out the win. Hamline also claimed two of the three doubles points to gain an early edge. Singles victories for Calvin came from Brian DeMaagd, Philip Reinken and Jarrod Brower. Loukas Peterson and Reinken claimed Calvin’s lone doubles point at #2 doubles. Calvin is back in action on Thursday against Lawrence College.

Andrew Krafft Earns National Runner-Up Berth on Three-Meter Diving Board at NCAAs

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Calvin College sophomore Andy Krafft came within 1.1 points of claiming a national title on the three-meter board Wednesday night at NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Krafft was competing at the at IU Natatorium, a facility he has competed in several times at the club level while growing up in Indiana. Krafft finished second on the three-meter board with a score of 541.55 points, just behind Phil DeVine of Wisconsin-Oshkosh who claimed his second three-meter national title in the last three years with a score of 542.65 points. It marks the third All-America performance of Krafft’s collegiate career. A year ago, Krafft placed third on the three-meter board and second on the one-meter board.Krafft will compete on the one-meter board on Friday. His second place finish Wednesday night gave Calvin 17 points in the team standings which has Calvin in a tie for 18th place. Scheduled to compete for the Calvin men on Thursday is junior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) in the 100 butterfly prelims where he is seeded eighth. On the women’s side, junior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) will compete in the 200 freestyle prelims where she is seeded 41st.

Baseball Closes Out Tucson Trip With Dramatic Win Over Luther College

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin closed out its spring trip to Tucson with a dramatic 5-4 victory over Luther College. Junior Jack Jorgenson connected on a two-out walk-off single that plated junior Tyler Tos with the game-winning run. Sophomore Cory Laster went the first four innings for the Knights on the mound while sophomore Steve VanderMolen, freshman Nate Schepers, sophomore Jeff Victor and senior Joe Lambers came on in relief with Lambers gaining the win. Junior Ben Cok had a pair hits and scored two runs while Jorgenson was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Calvin will carry a 5-5 overall record into MIAA play later this week. The Knights open up league play on Friday with a doubleheader at Trine scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Softball Splits Tuesday Contests in Tucson - Belts Five Homers on the Day

TUCSON, AZ - The Calvin softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-3 to North Central and defeating Carleton College 11-3. In the loss to North Central, sophomore Lina Avila took the loss but also went 3-for-4 at the plate including a three-run homer. Senior Marie Prins and freshman Trista Brownlee also had two hits apiece.In the win over Carleton, Brownlee tossed a three-hitter, striking out six and walking none in a game limited to six innings because of the mercy-rule. Calvin belted four homeruns in the win with Avila and freshmen Merin Cok, C.J. Hillbrands and Nicole Weener all going deep.

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches on Monday to dip to 1-7 on the year. Calvin opened the day with a 9-0 loss to regionally-ranked Grinnell College and then suffered a 6-3 loss to Hamilton College later in the day. In the loss to Hamilton, Calvin received a 7-6, 6-3 victory from Megan Visser at No. 1 singles and a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win from freshman Ali Roode at No. 6 singles. Visser and Samantha Rietema also claimed an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline University at 9 a.m.
