Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Trine Now 7-7 Overall and 2-2 in the MIAA

Calvin split a doubleheader with Trine Monday afternoon at Calvin Field and in the process, split a four-game series with the Thunder. On Monday, Calvin claimed a 7-2 game one win but then let a 3-0 lead slip away in game two as the Knights were defeated 6-3. On Saturday, the two teams split a doubleheader in Angola with Calvin winning 9-7 and Trine coming back to win 1-0. Both teams are now 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Calvin will host Olivet in a doubleheader on Thursday which is slated to start at 2 p.m.
Calvin Concludes Competition at NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships - Men Finish 26th

Calvin concluded competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Satuday. In the morning prelims, junior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) took 47th in the 100 freestyle (46.64) while junior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) placed 21st in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.53). Neither finish was enough to advance to the evening finals however. Calvin did place in the final men’s team standings thanks to a pair of All-America performances by sophomore Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) in the diving competition. The Calvin men placed 26th with 30 points.
Calvin Track and Field Athletes Receive MIAA Athlete of the Week Awards

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – For the first time in its history, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association is recognizing outstanding athletes in track and field with its Athlete of the Week award. The MIAA has announced its first recipients of those awards for the 2012 season. Each week, the conference will name an outstanding performer in track events and field events. For the week of March 17, Calvin’s Nick Kramer is men’s Track Athlete of the Week, while the Knights’ Jodi Hoekstra is women’s Track Athlete of the Week. Calvin’s Aaron Meckes is the men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Hilary Banning of the Knights is women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin baseball team picked up a victory in the opener of an MIAA doubleheader at Trine University Saturday afternoon, winning 9-7. Calvin built an 8-1 lead only to see Trine roar back to within a run at 8-7 heading into the seventh. Calvin tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh however as junior Tyler Tos ripped an RBI single to make it 9-7. Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs. In the bottom of the seventh, Trine (6-6, 1-1 MIAA) put runners on second and third with two outs but lefthander Cory Laster (Ludington) was able to extinguish the threat on a fly-out to centerfield to pick up his second save of the season. Senior Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe) picked up the win for Calvin (6-6, 1-1 MIAA) to run his season record to 3-1. Lambers struck out three and walked two. Senior Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) also had three hits and two RBI’s on the day. Calvin built an 8-1 lead by scoring two runs in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth before Trine scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to make the game interesting. In game two, Calvin suffered a hard-luck 1-0 defeat as the host Thunder scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore pitcher Grant VanderWall took the loss despite a strong pitching performance.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Calvin College sophomore Andrew Krafft collected his second All-America certificate of the week and the fourth of his collegiate career Friday night at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatatorium. Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) took sixth on the one-meter board with a score of 472.70 points. On Wednesday night, Krafft took second on the three-meter board. A year ago, he was second on the one-meter board and third on the three-meter board. Krafft’s score surpassed his point production one on the one-meter board from lat year’s national meet when he scored 459.0 points to take second.
Men’s Golf Captures Sunshine Invitational Title

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The Calvin men’s golf team captured first place at the two-day, 36-hole Sunshine Invitational on Friday. After opening with an 18-hole round team score of 311 at the Wannamaker Golf Course on Thursday, Calvin came back with a score of 298 on Friday at the Ryder Golf Course to finish with a final total of 609 strokes. Williams was second at 626 with Trinity of Connecticut third at 631. Sophomore Ross Ryzenga finished in second place in the final tournament standings with a two-day total of 151 strokes (75-76) and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Freshman Jon Cook finished tied for third with a total of 154 strokes (79-75) and also earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Freshman Michael Wierenga finished tied for sixth at 155 (82-73) while junior Ben Kuiper (76-81) and senior Brian Haverdink (82-75) were tied for eighth at 157.
Women’s Golf Defeats Nebraska Wesleyan in Florida Dual Match

LAKE WALES, FL - The women’s golf team opened up its spring schedule on Friday with a dual match against Nebraska Wesleyan. Calvin posted a team score of 367 with Nebraska Wesleyan coming in at 404. The competition was held at the Lekarica Golf Course. Sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin with an 87 followed by freshman Jackie Reichert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) with a 90. Junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with a 92 while junior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) had a 98.
Women’s Tennis Defeated by George Fox 7-2 in Spring Break Finale

ORLANDO, FL - Calvin closed out its spring trip to Orlando with a 7-2 loss to George Fox on Friday morning. Calvin’s only two points came in singles play with sophomore Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and freshman Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Calvin is back in action on March 31 when it travels to Kalamazoo for a conference match at 1 p.m.
Softball Splits Final Four Games in Tucson - Heads Home With 5-7 Overall Record

TUCSON, AZ - The Calvin softball team split its final four games of its spring trip to Arizona. The Knights will head home with an overall record of 5-7. On Wednesday, Calvin defeated Augsburg 8-2 and fell to Whitworth 11-2. On Thursday, Calvin dropped a 9-4 decision to Carthage in eight innings before coming back to defeat Carleton College 5-3. In the win over Augsburg Wednesday, the Knights received a complete-game pitching performance from sophomore Lina Avila. Avila helped her own cause with a homerun while senior Marie Prins went 4-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Merin Cok was also 2-for-2 at the plate.
Rushlow and Counsell Compete - Do Not Advance Out of Prelims at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Mark Rushlow and Elizabeth Counsell both competed for Calvin at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. Neither individual was able to qualify for the evening finals however. Rushlow (Goshen, IN) competed in the (men’s) 100 butterfly but was unable to advance out of the morning prelims, finishing 19th with a time of 50.07. Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) competed in the (women’s) 200 freestyle prelims and finished 42nd (1:57.74). Action will continue on Friday with Rushlow scheduled to compete in the 100 backstroke where he is seeded 36th (52.06) and Counsell in the 100 breaststroke where she is seeded third (1:03.62). Sophomore Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) will also compete in the men’s one-meter diving preliminaries Saturday afternoon.
