John Ross Claims 200th Collegiate victory as Calvin Women’s Basketball Coach

Coming off its first loss of the season, Calvin looked to rebound as it hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo. Calvin did just that, handing Kalamazoo a 72-38 defeat. Calvin is now 21-1 overall and 13-1 in the MIAA. The win was the 200th for Head Coach John Ross, all of which have come at Calvin College. Ross started at Calvin in the fall of 2003 after working as an assistant at Earlham College in Indiana for four years. In nine years as Calvin’s head coach, Ross is now 200-47. Junior center Julia Hilbrands ended the game with 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Knights offensively. Junior Carissa Verkaik added nine points and eight rebounds while junior Ally Wolffis also chipped in nine points.

The Calvin-Hope men’s basketball rivalry has again received national attention. The storied rivalry is featured on the NCAA website in a story written by Amy Farnum Patronis. This Saturday will mark the 181st meeting between the two rivals in a series that dates back to the 1920-21 season and sees Hope holding a 93-87 series lead. Women’s Basketball Slips One Spot in d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll

The Calvin women’s basketball team has dipped one spot in the latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll released this afternoon. The Knights have been ranked fourth for the past several weeks but dropped one spot in the rankings after falling for the first time this year on Saturday in a 59-55 loss at Hope. Defending national champion Amherst remains the top-ranked team in the country while the University of Chicago is ranked second, George Fox ranked third and DePauw now ranked fourth. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Dual Meet Victories for Calvin Over Olivet - Andrew Krafft Resets Record on One-Meter Board

The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams closed out their dual meet campaigns with victories over Olivet Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center.  In the menís competition, Calvin handed Olivet a 146-88 defeat while the Calvin women defeated Olivet 114-78. The Calvin women finish their dual meet season with a 7-2 record while the Calvin men finish 5-3 in dual meet action.
Sophomore Andrew Krafft once again dominated on the diving boards, establishing a new school records on the one meter board for six dives. On the one-meter board, Krafft took first place with a score of 363.90, breaking his previous record by nearly 20 points. It marked the third time this year that Krafft has reset the Calvin one-meter record. Krafft also won the three-meter board with a total of 354.75 points.

Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season - Falling 59-55 at Hope

Calvin’s bid for an undefeated season ended in Holland on Saturday with a 59-55 loss to rival Hope.  Calvin (20-1 overall, 12-1 MIAA) remains ahead of Hope (18-3 overall, 10-2 MIAA) in the league standings. The Knights have played one more league game than Hope. Carissa Verkaik led Calvin in the scoring column with 15 points to go with eight rebounds while freshman Kayla Engelhard had 10 points. Calvin trailed 26-24 at halftime and then fell behind by 11 points early in the second half. The Knights rallied to take a 47-45 lead before Hope would take the lead for good moments later on a three-pointer and then seal the game with free throws in the final minute of play.

Vande Streek Records 400th Win - Snikkers Hits 1,000 Point Plateau as Knights Defeat Hornets

Coming off a big win over Albion that put the team in a tie for third place, the Knights traveled down to Kalamazoo to face off against the Hornets at the Anderson Athletic Center. Calvin responded with its second road of the win, defeating the Hornets 77-65. The victory was the 400th of head coach Kevin Vande Streekís collegiate career. In 22 years at the collegiate level, Vande Streek is 400-213. Earlier this year, Vande Streek collected his 300th victory at helm of the Calvin menís basketball program. Prior to coming to Calvin, Vande Streek spent six years coaching at the University of Sioux Falls menís basketball. Junior forward Tom Snikkers also reached a milestone in the win, scoring 12 points to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Snikkers is the 21st individual in Calvin men’s history to score 1,000 points in a career. Calvin is now locked in a three-way tie for second place in the MIAA standings with Adrian and Trine.

Carissa Verkaik Named to Division III Capital One Academic All-District Team

Capital One Academic All-District Women's Basketball Teams

Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District 6 team in women’s basketball. As a member of the all-district team, Verkaik now advances to the national ballot and is eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is averaging 18.9 points and 8.7 rebounds a game while connecting on 57.9 percent of her field goal attempts. She has also blocked 81 shots for an average just over over four blocks per game. She is ranked nationally in both field goal percentage and blocked shots per-game average. Verkaik carries a 3.67 grade point average while majoring in education.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Albion 64-55 - Moves Back Into Third Place Tie in MIAA Standings

ALBION - Calvin moved back into a tie for third place in the MIAA standings with a 64-55 victory at Albion Wednesday night at Kresge Gymnasium. The Knights (10-10 overall, 5-4 MIAA) are now tied with Trine for third place in the league standings while Albion slips back to 4-5 in league play. Snikkers led Calvin with 23 points and 11 rebounds, notching his seventh collegiate double-double in the process. Sophomore center Tyler Kruis also had 11 points while Powell collected eight points off the bench. Junior David Rietema had six points, four assists and three steals.

Women’s Basketball Has 20/20 Vision In Claiming 79-49 Win at Alma

ALMA - On Wednesday night the Calvin women’s basketball team had 20/20 vision. The Knights (20-0 overall, 12-0 MIAA) defeated Alma 79-49 at Art Smith Arena, hitting the 20-win plateau for the 13th time in school history and for the seventh time under current head coach John Ross. Calvin shot 48.4 percent from the field in the first half in rolling out to a 45-17 halftime lead.  Calvin cooled down in the second half from the field but still managed to 47.6 percent (10 of 21) from three-point range in the win. Senior Jill Thomas had the hot hand for the Knights Wednesday, scoring a season-high 16 points on the strength of 6 of 8 shooting including four three-point field goals.
