Calvin Men Take Second in 800 Free Relay/Calvin Women Fourth in 800 Free Relay at MIAA Championships

HOLLAND – The first night of the four-day MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships took place Wednesday night at the Holland Aquatic Center. After one day of competition, the Calvin men are in second place with 34 points while the Calvin women are in fourth place with 30 points. The only finals events that took place on Wednesday were the men’s and women’s 800 freestyle relays.In the men’s 800 freestyle relay, the Calvin team of senior Ross Battoclette, freshman Alex Baumann, sophomore Andrew Mitchell and freshman Travis Vincent had a season-best time of 6:54.12 that was good for second place, just .54 of a second behind Kalamazoo’s winning relay team. On the women’s side, the Calvin team of junior Elizabeth Counsell, junior Stephanie Fox, freshman Kathryn Wrobel and junior Shelby Cloyd took fourth in a time of 8:05.48.

Women’s Basketball Captures Outright MIAA Regular Season Title & Top Seed for MIAA Tourney

Calvin College was able to send its seniors off with the outright MIAA regular season championship as the Knights defeated the Saint Mary’s College Belles 73-52 in their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday night. Playing in pink, breast cancer awareness jerseys, Calvin was able to fend off a pesky Belles team on Senior Night. Playing in their final regular season home games on Wednesday were Calvin seniors Jill Thomas, Leah Mattson and Courtney Kurncz. Junior Carissa Verkaik had 21 points and nine rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and 34th of her career. She also moved past Marcia Harris and into second place on the Calvin career scoring list, boosting her career total to 1,564 points. The MIAA title is Calvin’s 13th overall and fourth under current head coach John Ross. Calvin gains the top seed for the four-team MIAA Tournament and will host Saint Mary’s in a rematch next Thursday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Flashback: Bryan Powell Steal-And-Dunk In Calvin-Hope Game Now Online

With Calvin trailing late in the first half of its February 11 rivalry game with Hope at Van Noord Arena, Calvin junior Bryan Powell electrified the Calvin crowd with a steal and powerful one-hand dunk. Powell went on to score 16 points in the game. Calvin student videographer Mike Zaagman caught the Powell dunk and has posted the following video clip online:

Baseball Team Picked to Finish Third in MIAA Preseason Poll

The Calvin baseball team has been picked to finish third in the MIAA preseason coaches poll. A year ago, Calvin finished third in the final MIAA regular season standings with a 15-13 conference record. The Knights posted an overall record of 20-20. Defending MIAA champion Adrian has been picked as the preseason favorite. The Bulldogs received five of a possible eight first place votes while Hope has been picked to finish second. The Flying Dutchmen received the other three first place votes. Calvin is scheduled to open its season on March 2 against Defiance College in Danville, Kentucky. Calvin will open its MIAA season on March 23 when it travels to Trine for a conference doubleheader. This year also marks the first time the MIAA will hold a postseason conference tournament. The four-team tournament will take place May 9-11.

Brian Haverdink Reflects on Last Regular Season Home Game At Van Noord Arena

Playing in his final regular season home game as a Calvin College Knight, senior Brian Haverdink could not have asked for a better atmosphere than was present against Hope. Although the Knights could not dismantle the Dutch, Haverdink was grateful just the same. Haverdink’s last regular season game in Van Noord Arena was marked with an 11-point, six-rebound performance by Calvin’s lone senior against the team ranked number one in the nation in Division III.

Track and Field Action Continues at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE – Action continued at the Grand Valley State big meet on Saturday. Notable performances for the Calvin men’s team included sophomore Sam Kerk placing fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:39.93.In the men’s shot put, junior Aaron Meckes produced a season-best throw of 53-3 that places him ninth on the NCAA III qualifying list. On the women’s side, sophomore Stephanie Bennett had a solid day, posting a time of 8.20 in the 60 meter dash and a time of 26.70 in the 200 meter dash. Freshman Kate Ardinger also had a strong time of 5:10.97 that was good for 10th place in the mile run.

Women’s Basketball Claims Share of MIAA Regular Season Title With 67-44 Win at Olivet

OLIVET – Calvin clinched a share of the MIAA regular season title with a 67-44 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon. Ranked fifth nationally, Calvin improves to 22-1 overall and to 14-1 in the MIAA. The Knights can claim an outright title with a win over Saint Mary’s next Wednesday. The league title is Calvin’s 13th overall in women’s basketball which leads all MIAA schools. Calvin’s inside tandem of juniors Carissa Verkaik and Julia Hilbrands powered the Knights to the win as Verkaik had 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting while Hillbrands was 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free throw line for 16 points.

Hope Defeats Calvin 83-70 in 181st Meeting of The Rivalry

The Knights dropped an 83-70 loss to archrival and top-ranked Hope on Saturday, moving their record to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in conference. Sophomore Tyler Kruis led the Knights in scoring with 17 points. He also contributed 6 rebounds. Junior Bryan Powell was close behind with 16 points and junior Tom Snikkers led the way on the glass with 10 boards. Calvin held a 43-29 rebounding advantage but the Knights shot just 36.9 percent from the floor while Hope connected on 52.8 percent of its attempts. Calvin travels to Angola, IN to square off against Trine on Wednesday. Calvin is currently locked in a three-way tie for second place in the MIAA standings with Adrian and Trine as all three teams are 7-5 in league play. Albion is lurking close behind at 6-6 as four teams are vying for three available spots for the upcoming four-team league tournament. Hope has already clinched the top seed.

Tracksters Post Big Times on First Day at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE - The first day of competition of the Grand Valley State Big Meet took place on Friday and a handful of Calvin athletes competed and had big performances. Senior Nick Kramer had an NCAA III qualifying time in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:20.38. Teammates Matt VanderRoest and Dan Kerr also had strong performances with VanderRoest clocking in with a time of 14:49.62 and Kerr a time of 14:51.36.In the men’s mile run, junior Greg Whittle had a time of 4:12.40 which ranks him seventh on the NCAA III (indoor) qualifying list. On the women’s side, senior Jodi Hoekstra had a big time of 17:21.53 in the 5,000 meters while sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen broke the 18-minute mark for the first time this winter, clocking in at 17:57.48. Action continues on Saturday at Grand Valley State.

Men’s Basketball Holds On for Win in 100-99 Overtime Thriller Over Alma

Down by seven with three minutes in regulation, the Knights fought back to capture a thrilling 100-99 overtime victory over Alma on Wednesday. Junior Matt DeBoer hit a jumper in the closing seconds of regulation to send the contest into overtime. In the closing seconds of overtime, Alma missed a three-point shot, allowing Calvin to hold on for the win. Four Knights finished in double figures. Snikkers had 26 points and 11 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double. DeBoer had 22 points and seven rebounds. Powell had 21 points and Kruis had 16 points and nine rebounds. Alma’s Cory Schneider led all scorers with 27 points. With the win, Calvin remains tied for second place in the MIAA standings with Adrian at 7-4 in league play.
