Women’s Swimming & Diving Captures Eighth Straight MIAA Title

Heading into the final night of competition up 112.5 points over its nearest competitor, Calvin looked to hold on for the MIAA Championship. Not only did the Knights hold on to the lead, but the Knights also built up a 150-point advantage en route to a 803.5 point performance and its eighth straight women’s swim and dive title including its 10th in the last 12 years. In the 200 backstroke, Calvin claimed its first individual title of the night as freshman Erika Waugh finished in a NCAA B cut time of 2:06.42. Earlier in the day, Waugh established a new school record in the event with a time of 2:06.29. In the 200 breaststroke, junior Elizabeth Counsell earned another individual title for the Knights and her second of the weekend. Counsell’s time of 2:21.86 was good enough for a NCAA B cut. In the post-meet ceremonies, Calvin junior diver Samantha Klaasen was named the MIAA Most Valuable Diver for the second straight season for her first place performance on the one meter board and second place finish on the three meter board.

Calvin Men’s Basketball Defeats Olivet to Advance to MIAA Tournament Game Against Hope

OLIVET - The Calvin men’s basketball team advanced to the MIAA Tournament with an 81-74 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon at the Cutler Events Center. With the win, Calvin improves to 13-12 overall and more importantly to 8-6 in the MIAA. Calvin gained the fourth seed for the MIAA Tournament as Adrian defeated Albion 71-55 on Saturday evening to allow Calvin to finish one game ahead of (7-7) Albion in the final league standings. Calvin will travel to rival Hope for a Wednesday night MIAA Tournament semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. In its win over Olivet Saturday, Calvin was led by sophomore center Tyler Kruis who tallied a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kruis was one of four Calvin players to notch double-digits in scoring as junior David Rietema had a career-high 12 points while junior Matt DeBoer had 12 points and junior Bryan Powell 10 points. Junior Tom Snikkers had eight points to move past Kevin Broene and into 17th place on the Calvin career scoring list.

Calvin Track & Field Teams Compete at GVSU Tuneup Invitational

ALLENDALE Ė A group of Calvin track and field athletes compete at the Grand Valley State Tuneup Invitational.  Notable performances for the Calvin women included sophomore Stephanie Bennett placing ninth in the 200 meters (26.52), junior Kaylea Brase placing 11th in the 800 meters (2:20.88), senior Jodi Hoekstra placing third in the 3,000 meters (10:12.95), freshman Amy Sybesma placing sixth in the high jump (5-0 ľ), senior Laura Sybesma winning the triple jump (34-4), freshman Christina Greating placing seventh in the pole vault (9-10 ĺ) and sophomore Hillary Banning placing sixth in the long jump (15-9 ĺ) and third in the triple jump (33-3 ľ). On the menís side, sophomore Matt Christians was second in the high jump (6-5), sophomore Evert Geerlings was seventh in the pole vault (14-2), freshman Jacob Kuyvenhoven placed sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:37.76), freshman Erik Holstege was seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (9:04) and eighth in the long jump (19-8 3/4) while junior Aaron Meckes was fourth in the shot put (51-6 Ĺ).

Calvin will now prepare to host the Michigan/Indiana Invitational next Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

Rushlow and Battoclette Claim MIAA Individual Titles at Conference Meet

The Calvin menís swim and dive team is poised to complete one of its strongest finishes in recent memory after Fridayís MIAA conference meet at the Holland Aquatic Center. After Fridayís action, the Knights sit in fourth place with 407 points. They trail Olivet, Hope, and Kalamazoo, who hold 420.5, 481 and 510.5 points respectively. The Knights were led by standout performances from seniors Mark Rushlow and Ross Battoclette. Rushlow became the first Calvin swimmer since Peter Boumgarden to win the butterfly. Boumgarden was a four-team champion from 2002-to-2005. On Friday, Rushlow took the 100 butterfly with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 49.33, just missing the school record of 49.25 set by Boumgarden in 2002. Meanwhile, senior Ross Battoclette, won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.63, becoming the first-ever swimmer in Calvin menís history to win the race at the conference meet. Battoclette came from behind in the final two lengths to take the event in dramatic fashion. Freshman Alex Baumann improved his preliminary time by nearly two seconds to place third.

Calvin Women’s Swimming & Diving Team Closing in On 8th Straight MIAA Title

HOLLAND - In women’s swimming and diving Friday night at the MIAA Championships, Calvin used depth across the board to build a commanding 112.5 point lead over second place Hope. The Knights are bidding for their eighth straight MIAA title including their 10th in the last 12 years. Heading into Saturdayís final day of competition, Calvin has a total of 562.5 points with Hope second (455) and Kalamazoo third (396.5). Calvin claimed two individual titles on Friday with junior Elizabeth Counsell repeating as league champion in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA III Bí cut qualifying time of 1:05.42 while junior Samantha Klaasen repeated as league champion on the one-meter diving board, winning with a season-best time of 433.30 points. Calvin also posted a win in the 200 medley relay with the quartet of Erika Waugh, Counsell, Rachel Colasurdo and Stephanie Fox posting a time of 1:48.18.

Women’s Tennis Opens up Season With 9-0 Win Over Cornerstone

Calvin opened up its season Friday night with a clean sweep of Cornerstone, 9-0. The matches were played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin opened up the match in doubles play, where the first doubles team of Megan Visser and Samantha Reitsma defeated Amy Fouty and Hanna Guest 8-1. The second doubles team of Bethany Zoerhof and Elise Doezema won by a score of 8-3. Rounding out the doubles was Emily Swets and Nicole Sheppard who defeated Kelly Gampel and Carrie Carr 8-0. Calvin continued to roll in singles play, sweeping all six flights.The Knights are now 1-0 and look forward to next weekend when they travel down to Wheaton for matches on Friday and Saturday.

Day Two Report from MIAA Swimming And Diving Championships

HOLLAND Ė With two days of competition left at the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the Calvin womenís team is in second place while the Calvin menís team is in third place. On the womenís side, Calvin sits two points behind host Hope as the Knights have 253 points with Hope holding the lead at 255. On the menís side, Calvin is in third place with 217 points, 19 points ahead of Olivet and 31 points behind Hope with Kalamazoo in first with 296 points. In the menís competition, sophomore Andrew Krafft highlighted the competition by repeating as MIAA champion on the one-meter diving board, recording a score of 534.55 after posting a score of 546.10 in the prelims

Calvin Women’s Cross Country Team And Runners Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named its 2011 All-Academic recipients in women’s cross country and three members of the Calvin women’s cross country team have been so honored. In order to receive USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, individuals must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships. Individuals from Calvin that received the honor include senior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS), junior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Alyssa Pram (Cheboygan, MI/Home Schooled). In addition, the Calvin women’s team has also received USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors with a 3.52 grade point average. The Calvin women’s team has received the award for over 20 consecutive years.

Men’s Basketball Defeated at Trine 73-54 - Faces Must-Win at Olivet To Remain in MIAA Tourney Hunt

The Knights dropped a 73-54 loss to Trine on Wednesday, setting up a must-win game with Olivet on Saturday. Statistically, Junior Tom Snikkers led the Knights with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Brian Haverdink joined him in double figures with 10 points. The loss drops the Knights to .500 overall at 12-12 and 7-6 in conference. Calvin will travel to Olivet on Saturday for a game that will decide its conference tournament fate.
