Women’s Basketball Captures MIAA Tournament Title With 65-43 Win Over Hope

The Knights left no doubt about the MIAA Tournament championship with a 65-43 victory over rival Hope on Saturday. The MIAA Tournament title is Calvin’s second straight including its sixth overall. The Knights (25-1) receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament next week. The NCAA III Tournament field will be announced on Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Calvin jumped out to a 17-0 lead and did not allow Hope to score until 9:09 was left in the first half. Junior Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 15 points, 19 rebounds and nine blocked shots while senior Jill Thomas had 13 points and freshman Kayla Engelhard 12 points. Calvin is now 31-14 all-time in the MIAA Tournament including 8-0 in MIAA Tournament games at Van Noord Arena. The Knights will be making their 13th appearance in the NCAA III Tournament including their sixth under ninth-year head coach John Ross. Calvin is 15-12 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play.

Calvin Softball Team Picked to Finish 8th in MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll

The 2012 preseason MIAA softball coaches’ poll has been announced and Calvin has been picked to finish eighth out of nine teams. Two-time defending champion Alma has been picked to repeat as champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in the poll while Adrian is picked to finish second and Trine third. Calvin returns seven letterwinners from its 2011 team that finished 6-28 overall. The Knights welcome in 10 freshmen to the 17-player roster this year. Calvin is scheduled to open its season on March 2 with a doubleheader against Mount St. Joseph in Danville, Kentucky. The Knights open their MIAA season on April 5, traveling to Saint Mary’s for a twinbill.

Calvin Women’s Basketball Advances to MIAA Tournament Finals With 78-50 Win Over Saint Mary’s

The Calvin women’s basketball team advanced to the MIAA Tournament Championship game with a 78-50 victory over Saint Mary’s Thursday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin led 40-21 at halftime and pulled away inside the final 12 minutes of play. Junior Carissa Verkaik had 25 points to lead the Knights while junior Ally Wolffis had 13 points and freshman Kayla Engelhard 12 points. Senior Courtney Kurncz had five steals, five points, four assists and two blocked shots to aid the victory. Calvin will face rival Hope Saturday night in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Doors to the arena will open at 6:30 p.m.

Calvin Concludes Season with 87-80 Loss to Hope in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men’s basketball season came to a conclusion Wednesday night with an 87-80 loss to Hope in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin concludes its season with an overall record of 13-13. Calvin trailed 41-27 at halftime but came back to cut the deficit to eight points on four separate occasions in the second half and to five points with nine seconds to play. Ranked number-one in the country, Hope was able to hold off Calvin with free throw shooting inside the final minute of play. Calvin was led in defeat by junior guard Bryan Powell with 18 points while sophomore center Tyler Kruis who tallied his second straight double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Tom Snikkers had 14 points while Matt DeBoer had 13 points. Hope was led by David Krombeen with 23 points as Hope shot 52.7 percent from the floor. Calvin held a 39-34 rebounding advantage.Hope now leads the all-time series with Calvin 95-87 and will host the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. against Adrian.

Seven from Calvin Named to All-MIAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Team - Klaasen Named Most Valuable

Seven members of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. It marks the second-highest single-season total in Calvin swimming and diving history. Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are senior Rachel Bos, juniors Rachel Colasurdo, Stephanie Fox, Elizabeth Counsell, Samantha Klaasen and freshmen Erika Waugh and Kathryn Wrobel. Klaasen headlines the group as she has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Diver for the second straight year.

Four Calvin Athletes Named to All-MIAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Team - Krafft Named Most Valuable

Four members of the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are senior Ross Battoclette, junior Mark Rushlow, sophomore Andrew Krafft and freshman Travis Vincent. Sophomore Andrew Krafft headlines the group as he was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Diver for the second straight year. At the MIAA Championships, Calvin placed fourth with a school record point total of 635 points.

Carissa Verkaik Named Capital One Division III Academic All-American in Women’s Basketball

Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named a Capital One Division III Academic All-American in women’s basketball. Verkaik has been named to the Division III Capital One Academic All-America Third Team. Verkaik is the second individual in Calvin women’s basketball history to receive the prestigious accolade as Lisa Winkle was an Academic All-American in both 2006 and 2007 in women’s basketball. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is averaging 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game while connecting on 56.5 percent of her field goal attempts. She has also blocked 100 shots for an average just over over four blocks per game. She is ranked nationally in both field goal percentage and blocked shots per-game average.

MIAA Tournament Men’s Basketball Ticket Information

The Calvin men’s basketball team will face Hope Wednesday night in an MIAA Tournament semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Tickets for Wednesday’s game will be on sale at Calvin’s website (www.calvin.edu/boxoffice), and at the Box Office on Monday and Tuesday, February 20 and 21 from 9:00am until 5:00pm.  If available they will be sold through Hope’s Box Office on Wednesday and at the door to the game.  Ticket Prices: General Admission tickets are FREE for MIAA students with student ID.  General Admission tickets are $3.00 for any college faculty/staff and students, High School students and children, and $5.00 for all others.

MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Ticket Information

General Admission tickets for Thursday’s MIAA Tournament semifinal game between Calvin and Saint Mary’s will be on sale at Calvin’s website (www.calvin.edu/boxoffice), and at the Box Office Monday through Thursday, February 20 - 23 from 9:00am to 5:00pm.  Tickets will also be sold at the Arena starting at 6:30pm on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Ticket Prices: General Admission tickets are FREE for MIAA students with student ID.  General Admission tickets are $3.00 for any college faculty/staff and students, High School students and children, and $5.00 for all others.  There is no limit on the number of tickets to be purchased.

Calvin Men Take Fourth at MIAA Championships - Post School Record Point Total

HOLLAND - After the final day in the Holland Community Aquatic Center, the Calvin men’s swim and dive team finished this week’s MIAA tournament with a fourth place finish. The Knights scored a school record point total of 635.5 points, coming just five points short of topping Olivet and finishing third in conference for the first time since 2006. Senior Ross Battoclette continued an impressive final conference campaign by taking second place in the 200 yard backstroke. The Knights also recorded a fine performance on the diving boards. Sophomore Andrew Krafft won the one-meter diving as he totaled 575.10 points, over 55 points more than the second place finisher. His score was also a new school record. At the conclusion of the meet, he was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Diver for the second straight year. His final dive earned a 63.00 point ruling from the judges. Freshman Jordan Kaster placed fourth with 399.5 total points.Another highlight during the day came from freshman Travis Vincent who placed third in the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:07.07. In the 100 freestyle, junior Mark Rushlow continued his strong weekend by placing second with a time of 46.23.
