Calvin Men’s Basketball Team Shuts Down Trine Attack in 78-51 Win at Van Noord Arena

On a day when Calvin honored its 1992 Men’s Basketball National Champions, the first National Championship in Knights history, Calvin defeated Trine in dominating fashion, 78-51.Calvin had five players with double digit points, led by juniors Tom Snikkers and Bryan Powell, each with 16. Sophomore Tyler Kruis added 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior Matt DeBoer chipped in 13 and sophomore Jordan Mast scored 10. Junior David Rietema, despite not scoring, had a big impact on the game dishing out 11 assists. The Thunder were led on offense by Jackson, who finished with 15, while Rogers scored 13 to go with seven rebounds, and Kent totaled 10 points.

Calvin Swimming & Diving Teams Claim Victories In Triangular With Alma & Saint Mary’s

A week after impressive second place finishes at the Chicago Invitational, the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team was able to defeat Alma College 118-106 in a dual meet while the women bested Alma 124-104 and Saint Mary’s 121-84.

Calvin Men’s Basketball Team Falls 81-65 at Rival Hope Despite Blistering First Half Performance

HOLLAND, MICH - Calvin was unable to keep up the pace of a torrid first half as the Knights faltered in the final 20 minutes in dropping an 81-65 decision at rival Hope Wednesday night. Calvin led 40-32 at halftime behind a blistering 64.0 percent field goal clip - Calvin’s best shooting half of the season. Hope outscored Calvin 49-25 in the second half and used a 19-2 run to take a lead it would not give up. Calvin (7-9 overall, 2-3 MIAA) was led in defeat by junior Tom Snikkers with 17 points and six rebounds while sophomore center Tyler Kruis and Matt DeBoer had 13 points apiece. Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Trine University at 3 p.m. During halftime of Calvin’s game on Saturday, the members of Calvin’s 1991-92 national championship team will be honored.

Women’s Basketball Rolls to Win at Saint Mary’s - Remains Unbeaten on the Year

Traveling down to Notre Dame, IN for a midweek game against Saint Mary’s, the Calvin Knights women’s basketball team continued its undefeated season, defeating the host Belles 80-54. Ranked fourth nationally, the Knights are now 16-0 overall and 8-0 in the MIAA at the mid-point of the league schedule.To go along with Kurncz’s 22 points, Verkaik added a near triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocks, while Wolffis added 14 points and seven rebounds. Off the bench, Julia Hilbrands had seven points and nine rebounds. Calvin shot 67.7% in the second half en route to 52.3% shooting for the game. The Knights held the Belles to just 26.9% shooting for the game.

Joel Kamstra Named Head Men’s Varsity Lacrosse Coach

Calvin College has named Joel Kamstra as its first head men’s varsity lacrosse coach. A native of Grand Rapids, Kamstra is no stranger to Calvin College or the school’s lacrosse program as he has served as an assistant coach with the Calvin men’s club lacrosse program the last two years. He will also serve as the head coach this spring in Calvin’s final year of club men’s lacrosse with the Knights making the transition to varsity status for the 2012-13 academic year. A 2007 Calvin College graduate, Kamstra was a four-year member of the Calvin men’s club lacrosse program during his time as a student. Kamstra was a midfielder with the Calvin men’s lacrosse club team and was part of teams that earned bids to the MCLA National Tournament. He was also part of teams that captured 2004, 2005 and 2006 CCLA Conference Championships while serving as team captain his senior year.

Bryan Powell Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

Calvin College junior guard Bryan Powell has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men’s basketball. Powell, a junior from Wyoming (Wyoming Park HS), averaged 21 points per game in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories. He scored 18 points and added four steals in a 68-47 victory over Kalamazoo, then scored a career-high 24 points as Calvin defeated Alma, 85-77. Powell, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, made 18 of 34 shots (53 percent) from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line (86 percent) for the week.

Calvin Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Teams Place Second at U. of Chicago Classic

CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both finished second at the University of Chicago Classic late Saturday night with the Calvin men placing second with 878 points while the Calvin women were second with 709 points. Host Chicago won both the men’s and women’s competitions with the Chicago women posting a team score of 1,107,5 points and the Chicago men posting a total of 834.5 points. On the men’s side, sophomore diver Andrew Kraft winning the one and three-meter competitions. His winning score on the one-meter board of 540.60 was a pool record, a new Calvin (school) record, a season-best performance and an NCAA III qualifying total. His winning score of 545.80 on the three-meter board was also a season-best and NCAA III qualifying total. On the women’s side, junior Stephanie Fox took first place in both the 200 freestyle (1:59.60) and 100 freestyle (54.86).

Calvin College Graduates Compete at U.S Olympic Marathon Trials

HOUSTON, TX - Three Calvin College graduates ran in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials on Saturday. In the men’s race, Calvin graduates Paul Petersen and Jed Christiansen finished 55th and 61st respectively. A 2001 Calvin graduate, Petersen took 55th with a time of 2:20.31. A 2010 Calvin graduate, Christiansen finished 61st in a time of 2:21.09. In the women’s race, 2008 Calvin College graduate Christina Overbeck took 108th in a time of 2:48.25. Her race came just over a month after she had qualified for the trials with a time of 2:44.44 at a last-chance meet in Sacramento, California.

Men’s Basketball Evens League Record With 85-77 Win at Alma

ALMA - Calvin put together its second straight win with a 85-77 road victory at Alma College Saturday afternoon, improving the Knights overall record to 7-8 and their league record to 2-2. Junior forward Tom Snikkers led the Knights with 25 points and 11 rebounds while fellow junior Bryan Powell had a career-high 24 points of his own. Snikkers scored 16 of his 25 in the second half and hit numerous big shots down the stretch to shut the door on the Scots. Powell’s 24 marked his career high so far in a Calvin uniform.  Senior Brian Haverdink also matched a career-scoring high with 13 points, connecting on 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Kruis also had eight points and seven rebounds for Calvin. Calvin will travel to Hope College on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at DeVos Arena for the first meeting of The Rivalry this season.

Women’s Basketball Claims 78-44 Non-Conference Victory at Rochester College

AUBURN HILLS - Calvin rolled to a 78-44 non-conference victory over Rochester College Saturday afternoon at Oakland Christian High School. Ranked fourth nationally, the Knights are now 15-0 on the year. Calvin led 41-23 at halftime and never looked back, outscoring the host Warriors 37-21 over the final 20 minutes of play. Calvin’s post tandem of juniors Carissa Verkaik and Julia Hilbrands combined for 30 points with Verkaik collecting 16 points, six rebounds and five assists while Hilbrands had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. 13 Calvin players reached the scoring column as the Knights shot 47.8 percent from the floor and outrebounded Rochester 40-30.  Calvin was 8-of-22 from three-point range with six different players connecting on at least one trifecta. Junior Kelsey Irwin and sophomore Shelby Sheehan had two three-point field goals apiece.
