BIG RAPIDS - The Calvin women’s basketball team traveled to Ferris State for an exhibition game Tuesday night and came away with a 75-73 overtime loss. Verkaik led all scorers with 24 points to go with 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Senior Jill Thomas (West Catholic HS) added 12 points on the strength of four three-point field goals while junior Ally Wolffis (Muskegon-Mona Shores HS) had eight points and freshman Kayla Engelhard (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) had seven points.
Calvin will officially open its season next Tuesday when it travels to Manchester for a 6 p.m. contest.

The All-MIAA women’s soccer teams have been announced and three Calvin players have received all-conference accolades. Juniors Francesca Smith and Liz Cancel have been named to the All-MIAA first team while sophomore Danielle Carter has been named to the All-MIAA second team.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Lexi Scott its Women’s Swimmer/Diver of the Week award for meets through November 5.Scott, a freshman from Richmond, Ind. (Richmond HS), won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:15.14 as the Knights rallied to defeat Wheaton, Ill., 147-137, in a non-conference dual meet. She also placed third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.92 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.58. Calvin returns to action this weekend when it hosts Wayne State Friday for a non-conference meet and then travels to rival Hope on Saturday for a conference meet.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin middle hitter Rebecca Kamp its Player of the Week and Calvin defensive specialist Kelly Gordon its Specialty Player of the Week for matches played through November 5. Kamp, a senior from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 14 kills in 17 attempts for a hitting percentage of .765, a Van Noord Arena record, as the Knights swept Hope in the championship match of the MIAA tournament. She finished with 22 kills and eight blocks for the tournament. Kamp is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and eighth time in her career. Gordon, a junior from Caledonia (Grand Rapids South Christian HS), played a key role on defense with 28 digs in two matches as Calvin won the MIAA tournament. She had 11 digs in a semifinal win over Trine, then had 17 digs in the championship match against Hope. Gordon is being honored as Specialty Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

The Calvin men’s soccer team has received an at-large (Pool C) bid to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights will face Cathage College (Wisc.) in a first-round game Friday night in Dubuque, Iowa, on the campus of Loras College. Host Loras (16-3-2) will face Minnesota-Morris (11-4-4) in the other first round game. Game times will be announced later this afternoon. Calvin (15-5-1) will be making its 11th appearance in the NCAA III Tournament including its seventh under current head coach Chris Hughes. The Knights have now reached the NCAA III five straight years. Calvin and Carthage (14-5-2) met in in a regular season contest a year ago with Calvin claiming a 2-0 win in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title this year, finishing 11-2-1 in league play. Calvin is 10-9-4 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play.

The Calvin women’s volleyball team will host an eight-team NCAA III regional November 10-12 at Van Noord Arena. Joining Calvin at the regional will be Otterbein (Oh.), Hope (Mich.), St. Norbert (Wisc.), Heidelberg (Oh.), Geneva (Pa.), Rose-Hulman (Ind.) and Wittenberg (Oh). First round matchups on November 10 will feature Heidelberg (31-6) against Geneva (27-8), Wittenberg (31-3) against Rose-Hulman (24-8), Otterbein (25-5) against Hope (24-6) and Calvin (31-0) against St. Norbert (26-7). Calvin will be making its 21st appearance in the NCAA III Tournament. The Calvin Knights are 26-21 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. The Knights are the defending national champions.

For the third time in four years, Calvin College senior Rebecca Kamp has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in volleyball. In addition, she has been named to the All-MIAA first team along with Calvin teammates Lizzie Kamp and Megan Rietema. Seniors Renee DeHaan and Erin VanderPlas have been named to the All-MIAA second team. A middle-hitter, Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) is the first three-time league-MVP in MIAA women’s volleyball history. She is also just the sixth individual in MIAA history to be named a four-time first team All-MIAA selection in volleyball, joining Leah Calsbeek (Calvin, 1983-86), Holly VandenBerg (Hope, 1983-86), Heather Velting (Hope, 1996-99), Lauree Dermyer (Adrian, 01-04) and Katie Zondervan (Calvin, 04-07).

Calvin College senior Miles Colago has been named to the Division III Capital One All-District 6 team in men’s soccer. This is the first year that the Capital One Academic All-America program coordinated by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA) has been split into four separate divisions. In past years, the program was split into a University (Division I) and College Division (Division II, III and NAIA schools). Beginning with this year, the program now has a separate division for Division I, Division II, Division III and a fourth division for NAIA and two-year institutions. Calvin is also now located in District 6 which includes Division III schools in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. As a member of the all-district team, Colago advances to the national ballot and is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors.

Returning to action after a week of practice, the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted Wheaton Saturday afternoon. The men would take the meet by an overall score of 169-129, winning their second straight meet against the Thunder. Heading into the final event a point ahead of Wheaton, the Calvin women had to win the final event to take the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights A relay team of Alex Dhaenes, Rachel Colasurdo, Margaret Rechel, and Stephanie Fox would take the final event in a time of 3:41.88, claiming the meet for Calvin. The women won the meet by an overall score of 147-137. Both teams are now 1-1 in dual meet competition and return to action next Friday when they host Wayne State University in non-conference dual meets.

The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team rolled to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 victory over rival Hope Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena to capture the 2011 MIAA Tournament title and an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament. The MIAA Tournament title is Calvin’s eighth MIAA Tournament crown including its sixth under current head coach Amber Warners. Calvin hit .337 as a team including .375 in the opening set to gain the early momentum. The sister combination of Rebecca and Lizzie Kamp was again powerful as each sister pounded home 14 kills with Lizzie hitting .314 and Rebecca hitting a Van Noord Arena single-match record .765 in the win, breaking the previous record of .714 set by Renee DeHaan in 2009. Sophomore setter Megan Rietema had 34 assists and 10 digs. Calvin’s defense was also stellar as the Knights had 47 digs led by 17 from senior Kelly Gordon while the Knights also piled up seven blocks.
