Four Calvin Players Named to AVCA Division III Great Lakes All-Region Teams

Four members of the Calvin women’s volleyball team have received AVCA Division III Great Lakes All-Region honors. The four Calvin players named to the all-region honor team are seniors Rebecca Kamp and Erin VanderPlas, junior Lizzie Kamp and sophomore Megan Rietema. As members of the all-region team, all four individuals are now eligible for All-America consideration.

Rebecca Kamp and Lizzie Kamp Named to Capital One Academic All-District Volleyball Teams

Capital One Academic All-District Volleyball Teams

Rebecca Kamp and Lizzie Kamp have been named to the Division III Capital One All-District 6 team in women’s volleyball. This is the first year that the Capital One Academic All-America program coordinated by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA) has been split into four separate divisions. In past years, the program was split into a University (Division I) and College Division (Division II, III and NAIA schools). Beginning with this year, the program now has a separate division for Division I, Division II, Division III and a fourth division for NAIA and two-year institutions. Calvin is also now located in District 6 which includes Division III schools in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. As members of the Capital One Academic All-District team, both Kamp sisters are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Calvin Defeats St. Norbert in First Round NCAA III Tourney Match - To Meet Hope in 2nd Round

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team picked up a 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 victory over St. Nobert College in a first round NCAA III Tournament match at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Calvin will face rival Hope in a second round match Friday night at 7 p.m. The meeting will be the fourth of the year between the two teams. Calvin (32-0) hit .429 in the opening set against St. Nobert but the Green Knights fought back behind a stubborn defensive effort. St. Norbert finished with 51 digs in the three-set match and limited Calvin to a .150 hitting percentage in set three. Calvin entered the match with the nation’s top hitting percentage at .325 and did hit .302 overall in the win. Erin VanderPlas led Calvin with a match-high 15 kills and an attack percentage of .433 while senior Rebecca Kamp had 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .391. St. Norbert (26-8) received nine kills from Breanne Brocker and 16 digs from Abby West.

Hope Claims Three-Set Win Over Otterbein in First Round NCAA III Tournament Match

Playing in a familiar environment, 14th ranked Hope College was able to roll to a three-set first round victory over Otterbein University (25-21,25-22,25-16) at the NCAA Regional Site of Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hope will now face Calvin in a second round match Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be the fourth of the year between the two rivals including the third in the last two weeks.

Wittenberg Rolls to First Round Win Over Rose-Hulman Institute in First Round NCAA Match

Entering its 16th consecutive NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament, the experience of No. 5 Wittenberg was too much for newcomer Rose-Hulman as the Tigers defeated the Fightin’ Engineers 3-0 (25-15,25-10,25-11) in first round tournament play at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids,MI. Wittenberg now advances to the second round where they will face Heidelberg, who defeated Geneva 3-2 in a comeback victory earlier in the day. Wittenberg will now face Heidelberg in its second round match, who it swept earlier in the year, at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday.

Heidelberg Holds Off Upset Bid by Geneva in First Round NCAA III Tournament Match

In a five-set match, Heidelberg prevailed over the Geneva by scores of 24-26, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 17-15.  Marian Bevington led Heidelberg with 17 kills while Vanessa Haase had 15 kills for the Student Princes. Rachel Kuegler had 12 kills as did Ashley Davis for Geneva. Genava was making its first-ever NCAA III Tournament appearance. 13th-ranked Heidelberg advances to the second round on Friday to face the winner of the first round match between Wittenberg and Rose-Hulman Institute.

NCAA III Volleyball Regional Final Set for Tonight Between Calvin and Wittenberg

The NCAA III volleyball regional concludes tonight at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena with fifth-ranked Wittenberg (33-3) taking on top-ranked Calvin (33-0) at 7 p.m.  The regional final will include live stats and live video streaming. Tickets will be available at the door.

Eight Members of Calvin Men’s Soccer Team Receive All-MIAA Honors

Eight members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have received either first or second team All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior Miles Colago, juniors Dan Nederhoed and Nick Holtrop, sophomore Zach Willis and freshman Dino Duratovic. Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are senior Justin Ahearne and juniors Michael Dolan and Chris Nance. Colago is receiving All-MIAA first team accolades for the second straight year while Nederhoed, Holtrop, Willis and Duratovic are being so honored for the first time.

Men’s Basketball Claims 79-72 Exhibition Game Victory Over Ferris State

In a home exhibition contest Tuesday night, Calvin came out and impressed as the Knights took down Division II foe Ferris State in a thrilling 79-72 victory.  Leading by a mere two points with under two minutes to play, the Knights managed to hold on and get the win. Leading the way for the Knights was junior Tommy Snikkers, who led all scorers with 20 points on 6 of 13 shooting despite getting into some foul trouble early on.  Junior Bryan Powell hit on 5 of 10 shots for 12 points on some clutch shooting, and sophomore Tyler Kruis also added 10 points with 6 rebounds as well.
