Men’s Soccer Wins Penalty Kick Shootout With Redlands - Will face Texas-Tyler in National Quarters

REDLANDS, CA - For the third consecutive year, the Calvin men’s soccer team has advanced to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament. On Friday night, Calvin advanced to the quarterfinals by winning a penalty kick shootout 5-3 over the University of Redlands. The game finished in a 1-1 double-overtime tie but Calvin converted all five of its penalty chances and sophomore goalkeeper Mirza Harambasic came up with a critical save on Redlands’ fourth penalty attempt. Junior Nick Holtrop converted the game-winning penalty for the Knights to clinch the shootout win. Calvin will face the University of Texas-Tyler which claimed a 2-1 overtime win over Randolph Friday night. Calvin and Texas-Tyler will meet Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EST) with the winner advancing to the national semifinals in San Antonio, Texas. In its game with Redlands, Calvin scored just 24 seconds into the match as sophomore Zach Willis stole a pass by the Redlands defense and whipped in his team-leading 14th goal of the year. Redlands came back to tie the game on a penalty kick goal in the opening minute of the second half after a Calvin foul. Calvin is now 12-9-5 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play and has won five consecutive shootouts in NCAA III Tournament play.

Calvin Uses OT Heroics to Defeat Grace Bible at Calvin Tipoff Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin received 27 points from junior Tom Snikkers in gaining a 92-88 double-overtime victory over visiting Grace Bible College Friday night in a first round game of the Calvin Tipoff Tournament.Calvin advances to the championship game on Saturday to face Willamette University which claimed a 108-101 win over D’Youville in Friday’s opening first round game. Junior Bryan Powell had 11 points off the bench from junior Bryan Powell including a key three-pointer in the second overtime. Sophomore Mickey DeVries had 13 points off the bench while sophomore Mitch Vallie had 15 points including a key triple near the end of regulation that gave Calvin a brief one-point lead. The Calvin/Willamette game will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Willamette Claims 108-101 in Opener of Calvin Tipoff Tournament

The first game of the Calvin Tip-off Tournament turned into a shootout as the D’Youville College Spartans (Buffalo, NY) and Willamette University Bearcats (Salem, OR) fought for a spot in the tournament championship. In the highest scoring game in the history of the Calvin Tipoff Tournament, Willamette prevailed 108-101. In the loss, D’Youville was lead by Raysean Johnson, who scored 36 points and had five rebounds. Johnson’s 36 was both a Tip-Off Tournament scoring record and a Van Noord Arena scoring record.

Women’s Basketball Claims 90-38 Win Over University of Cincinnati-Clermont

ANDERSON, IN - Calvin used 14 first half points from senior Courtney Kurncz to roll to a 90-38 victory over the University of Cincinnati-Clermont Friday night in a first round game of the Anderson University Tipoff Tournament. Kurncz finished the game with 16 points and hit 7 of her first 8 shots to propel the Knights to a 39-21 halftime lead. Junior Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 18 points while junior guard Kelsey Irwin tossed in 12 points off the bench as she was 4 of 5 from three-point range. Sophomore Shelby Sheehan also chipped in a career-high seven points off the bench.  Senior Jill Thomas also had five assists for the Knights.

Brian Diemer Named Gt Lakes Regional Women’s XC Coach of the Year - Coaches Preview Nationals

Brian Diemer has been named the Great Lakes Regional Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Now in his sixth year as Calvin women’s cross country coach, Diemer is receiving the award for the fourth straight year. This fall, Diemer led the Calvin women’s cross country team to its fourth straight Great Lakes Regional crown. The Knights posted a first place team score of 69 points at the regional meet hosted by Oberlin College this past Saturday. The Calvin women’s cross country team will head into the national meet this Saturday in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, ranked sixth nationally. Meanwhile, the Calvin men’s cross country team will head into the national meet on Saturday ranked fourth. Saturday’s races will feature a live video webcast. Rebecca Kamp Named AVCA Division III National Player of the Year

ST. LOUIS, MO - Calvin College senior Rebecca Kamp has received the highest honor in Division III volleyball. On Thursday night at the Division III All-America banquet ceremony, Kamp was named the Division III National Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. A graduate of Chicago Christian High School, Kamp is the first individual in Calvin women’s volleyball history to receive the award. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp recently was named a first team All-American for the fourth straight year. She is one of only two individuals in Division III women’s volleyball history to receive first team All-America honors four straight years.

Three members of the Calvin women’s volleyball team have been named Division III All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Senior Rebecca Kamp has been named a first team All-American for the fourth straight year while sophomore Megan Rietema has been named a first team All-American for the first time. In addition, junior Lizzie Kamp has been named a second team All-American, also receiving the honor for the first time. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Rebecca Kamp is the second four-time first team AVCA All-American in NCAA III women’s volleyball history, joining Christy Orndorff of Juniata (Pa) who did so from 1991-to-1994. A middle-hitter, she is also one of nine four-time All-Americans in Division III women’s volleyball history as seven others did so by combination of being named first, second or third team during their four years of collegiate competition. Finally, senior Erin VanderPlas has been named an honorable mention All-American.

Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener 73-60 at Anderson University

ANDERSON, IN - The Calvin men’s basketball team dropped its season opener, falling 73-60 at Anderson University Tuesday night. Anderson grabbed control early, shooting 57.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes - en route to taking a 44-29 halftime lead. Calvin came back to close within 10 at 50-40 early in the second half but got no closer as the host Ravens held the Knights at bay. Calvin was led in defeat by Bryan Powell with 14 points while Tom Snikkers had 12 points. Andrew Bowman was one of four Anderson players to notch double-digits in scoring as he recorded 24 points. Calvin returns home to host its own Calvin Tipoff Tournament this weekend. Calvin will host Grace Bible College Friday night with D’Youville and Willamette meeting in the other first round game.

Women’s Basketball Gains Come-From-Behind Win at Manchester in Season Opener

MANCHESTER, IN Calvin survived an upset bid by host Manchester Tuesday night, securing a 48-43 victory in its season-opener. Ranked sixth by one national poll and fifth in another, Calvin trailed 21-12 at halftime and shot just 35 percent overall but used a stingy defensive effort over the final 10 minutes of the game to gain the win. Junior center Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was key to the Calvin comeback, recording her 26th collegiate double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to go with seven blocked shots. Of her 20 points, 14 came in the second half.

Men’s Soccer to Face University of Redlands in Sectional Semfinal Game

The four-team field for the sectional tournament that the Calvin men’s soccer team is competing in is set for next weekend. Calvin (17-5-1) will take on the University of Redlands (Ca.) in a sectional semifinal game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (PCT)  in California. Redlands will serve as the sectional host. Randolph College (Va.) will face the University of Texas-Tyler in the first sectional semifinal game at 5 p.m. (PCT). Friday’s winners will then meet in the national quarterfinals at 5 p.m. (PCT) Saturday night. Redlands (20-3-1) advanced to the sectional semifinals with a 3-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Sunday night. Randolph (18-5-0) advanced to the sectional round with a 3-2 win over DeSales on Sunday while Texas-Tyler (17-2-2) advanced with a 2-0 win over Trinity (Tx) on Sunday. Calvin advanced to the sectional round with a 4-0 win over Loras College Saturday night. Calvin will be making its third straight appearance in the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament including its fourth appearance in the last seven years.
