Women’s Basketball Defeats Iowa Wesleyan 77-65 at Siena Heights Tournament

ADRIAN - The Calvin women’s basketball team upped its record to 4-0 with a 77-65 victory over Iowa Wesleyan Friday afternoon at the Siena Heights Thanksgiving Tournament. Junior Carissa Verkaik just missed a triple-double, recording 16 points, 10 blocked shots and seven rebounds. Calvin was 10-of-24 from three-point range led by junior Kelsey Irwin who swished 5-of-10 from three-point range, en-route to a 15-point effort. Senior Courtney Kurncz also had a strong game with 12 points, 8 rebounds and five assists. Calvin led 37-30 at halftime and blew the game open with a 16-2 second half run that allowed the Knights to build a 59-43 lead. Calvin will play in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against host Siena Heights.

Men’s Basketball Holds Off Finlandia 78-70 at Van Noord Arena to Move to 3-1 on Season

Calvin picked up its third victory of the year against one loss, handing the visiting Finlandia Lions 78-70 Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena. Finlandia (0-3) was 14-of-31 from three-point range (.452) but Calvin (3-1) held a 45-29 rebounding advantage and connected on 23-of-29 attempts (.793) from the free throw line.Sophomores Tyler Kruis and Mitch Vallie both swished a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the win. Kruis just missed a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 9 rebounds while matching a career scoring high. Senior Brian Haverdink also had 13 points for the Knights including a trio of three-pointers Junior Tom Snikkers chipped in with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Jonathon Moore led Finlandia with 18 points on 6 of 7 shooting from three-point range. Matt Strong also had 12 points for the Lions. Calvin is back in action on Friday when it faces Cornerstone University at 8 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Cornerstone’s Mol Arena.

Laura Bindon Named AVCA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year

Calvin College assistant women’s volleyball coach Laura Bindon has been named the AVCA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Bindon has been with Calvin Head Coach Amber Warners for the past nine years, and Warners calls her a “co-coach” in many areas.  Since she joined the coaching staff, the Knights have recorded a 289-56 (.828) record while winning their first ever national championship a year ago. This fall, she was a part of a Calvin team that fashioned an overall record of 33-1 and held a number-one ranking throughout the regular season. Calvin’s only loss came to eventual national champion Wittenberg in the NCAA III Regional Finals.assistant coach. She has also served as a head high school volleyball coach at Hudsonville Unity Christian High School.  The American Volleyball Coaches Association will formally present Bindon’s award at the 2011 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, December 15.  The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention.

Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Albion center Patty Rewa and Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its MIAA Co-Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through November 19. Verakik, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), averaging 17.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and four blocked shots per game as the Knights won three straight games to open the season. She scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked seven shots in a season-opening 48-43 win over Manchester, Ind., and later had 15 points, 11 boards and five blocked shots as Calvin won a weekend tournament at Anderson, Ind., 70-55. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career, converted 50 percent of her field goal attempts (22 of 44) and 88 percent of her free throws (7 of 8) for the week.

Tom Snikkers Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Tom Snikkers and Hope forward Nate Snuggerud its Players of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through November 19. Snikkers, a junior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), averaged 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the week as the Knights won two of three games. He won tournament Most Valuable Player at Calvin’s Tip-Off Tournament. In the first game, he had 27 points and 11 rebounds, including a game-tying 3-pointer that sent the game to a second overtime, in a 92-88 double overtime win over Grace Bible. He then followed with 16 points and seven rebounds in the championship game, an 81-76 win over Willamette, Ore. Snikkers is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Men’s Soccer Headed Back to NCAA III Final Four After 3-2 Double-Overtime Win Over Texas-Tyler

REDLANDS, CA - For the second time in three years, the Calvin men’s soccer team (18-5-2)  is headed back to the NCAA III Final Four. The Knights captured a national quarterfinal match over the University of Texas-Tyler (17-2-3) in improbable fashion Saturday night, winning 3-2 in double-overtime.Calvin will face Oneonta State (18-2-2) of New York. Montclair State (NJ) will face Ohio Wesleyan in the other semifinal. Calvin will play in the semifinals on December 2 in San Antonio, Texas, site of the NCAA III semifinals and final. Playing a man short, Calvin tied the game in the 86th minute of play on a goal by senior Brad Heethuis and then won the game 102nd minute of play on a goal by junior Trevor Bushhouse with Bushhouse rebounding a corner kick struck by junior Chris Nance. Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a first half goal by freshman Travis Vegter only to see Texas-Tyler score the next two goals.

Men’s Basketball Captures Tipoff Tournament Title

Led by a well-rounded effort in the post, Calvin claimed the title in its own Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday with an 81-76 victory over Willamette University on Saturday.  Tom Snikkers, Matt DeBoer, and Mitch Vallie joined Kruis in double digit scoring.  The Knights outrebounded the Bearcats 52 to 38.  Snikkers was named the tournament’s MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by Vallie.

Calvin Men’s Cross Country Takes 11th/Women Place 13th at NCAA III Championships

WINNECONE, WISC. - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA III Championships on Saturday at the Lake Breeze Golf Club with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh serving as host. On the men’s side, Calvin took 11th in the 8K race with a team score of 352 points. On the women’s side, Calvin finished 13th in the 6K race with a team score of 399 points. Calvin produced three All-Americans on Saturday with senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) finishing 14th individually in the women’s race while senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) was 21st and junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) 22nd in the men’s race.

Women’s Basketball Defeats Anderson 70-55 - Carissa Verkaik Named Tournament MVP

ANDERSON, IN - Calvin improved to 3-0 on the season with a 70-55 victory at Anderson University Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Tipoff Tournament. Calvin led 42-23 at halftime and never looked back as the Knights enjoyed a double-digit lead for a large portion of the game. Junior center Carissa Verkaik led Calvin in scoring with 15 points and 11 rebounds to notch her 27th collegiate double-double, en route to earning tournament MVP honors. She was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by senior forward Courtney Kurncz who tossed in 10 points along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Calvin is back in action next Friday when it opens play at the Siena Heights Thanksgiving Tournament against NAIA power Iowa Wesleyan.

Grace Bible Claims Consolation Game at Calvin Tipoff Tournament

After a heart-wrenching double overtime loss to Calvin Friday night, Grace Bible came out strong against D’Youville College Saturday afternoon. With the Tigers starting lineup averaging just under 6’4”, Grace Bible held an average two inch advantage over the Spartans. The Tigers would utilize this advantage all game long, outscoring D’Youville by 34 points in the paint en route to a 100-67 victory.
