Ben Kuiper Named MIAA Most Valuable Player in Men’s Golf

Calvin College junior Ben Kuiper has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in men’s golf. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Kuiper is just the second MIAA Most Valuable Player from Calvin in men’s golf and the first since 1965 when Lloyd Dozeman received the honor. This past Saturday, Kuiper earned MIAA medalist honors by finishing on top of the MIAA individual standings with a season average of 74.6 strokes-per-round. In addition, Kuiper has earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team. He is the second individual from his family to earn All-MIAA first team honors as his brother Jon Kuiper was a first team All-MIAA selection in 2009.

Lizzie Kamp Named MIAA Player of the Week in Volleyball

Calvin College junior Lizzie Kamp has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in volleyball. Kamp, a junior from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS),had 27 kills for a hitting percentage of .480 for the week as Calvin remained unbeaten with three straight MIAA wins. She had 14 kills in a sweep of Saint Mary’s, and had three service aces in a sweep of Albion. Kamp, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and third time in her career, also had 11 digs and five blocks for the week. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. match.

Alyssa Penning Named MIAA Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intecollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Alyssa Penning its MIAA Runner of the Week in women’s cross country for meets through October 8.Penning, a junior from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS), finished third in the small college (Division II/III) division at the Michigan Intercollegiates meet at Hillsdale with a time of 18:28 over the 6-kliometer course. Her performance led Calvin to a second-place showing among the 17 teams in the small college division, behind only Division II Saginaw Valley State, with a team score of 79 points. Calvin will now prepare to compete at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh pre-national invitational on Saturday.

Women’s Golf Takes Fourth at MIAA Tournament - Places Fourth in Final MIAA Standings

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin women’s golf team closed out its 2011 MIAA regular season with an eye looking forward to the 2012 MIAA Spring Tournament. Calvin clinched one of the four qualifying spots for next springs NCAA III qualifying tournament by finishing fourth in the final MIAA regular season standings on Saturday. Calvin completed the two-day MIAA Tournament with a fourth place score of 701 strokes. The two-day total placed Calvin in fourth place in the final league standings. The top four teams in the final MIAA regular season standings qualify for the spring tournament. Calvin will be making its first appearance as an NCAA-eligible qualifying team at the MIAA Tournament next spring. Calvin finished with a season scoring average of 350.3 strokes-per-round, an improvement of more than 33 strokes from a year ago. The scoring average is a new Calvin single-season (team) record. The Knights also jumped up three places in the MIAA standings from their seventh place finish of 2010.

Men’s Golf Fifth at Final MIAA Jamboree - Ben Kuiper Claims Overall MIAA Medalist Honors

ADRIAN - Calvin closed out its 2011 MIAA season with a fifth place showing at the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree of the year with a team score of 305 strokes. The MIAA Jamboree was hosted by Adrian on Saturday at the Lenawee Country Club. Calvin finishes in sixth place in the final MIAA overall standings. A highlight for Calvin on Saturday was the play of junior Ben Kuiper who fired a score of 72 on Saturday to finish in first place in the final MIAA individual standings. In doing so, Kuiper becomes the second MIAA medalist in Calvin men’s golf history and the first since Lloyd Dozeman did so in 1970. Kuiper finished the MIAA season with an average of 74.6 strokes-per-round. Kuiper’s round of 72 on Saturday was good for a tie for fourth place in the Jamboree.

Women’s Soccer Takes Sole Possession of Fourth Place in MIAA With 3-0 Win Over Trine

On yet another picture perfect day for playing soccer, Calvin’s women’s soccer team looked to build off their 4-1 win over Kalamazoo as it hosted Trine University. The Thunder came into the contest with a 1-6 record, compared to Calvin’s 5-3 MIAA mark. After a scoreless first half, Calvin received second half goals from Danielle Carter, Paige Rindels and Liz Cancel. Sophomore Ashton Hearn got the shutout in net for the Knights with two saves. Calvin is now in sole possession of fourth place in the MIAA standings and will travel to Alma next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.

Men’s Soccer Fit To Be Tied Against Alma Scots - Still Takes Over Top Spot in MIAA Standings

Despite a plethora of offensive chances, the Knights settled for a disappointing 0-0 result to Alma on Saturday afternoon.The tie moved the Knights’ MIAA record to 5-1-1 and brought the Scots to 2-4-1. Calvin moves into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as Olivet dropped a 2-1 decision to Adrian. Calvin is now one point ahead of Olivet and three points ahead of Hope and Trine. Calvin had numerous scoring chances and hit the crossbar twice. Calvin outshot Alma 32-7 in the contest. The Knights will travel to Adrian on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.

Volleyball Teams Drops Saint Mary’s to Stay on Top of MIAA Standings

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin Knights women’s volleyball team played host to the St. Mary’s Belles on Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two teams in the top half of the MIAA.  Calvin defeated St. Mary’s in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-13, keeping their perfect season record intact. 

Calvin jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first set.  The Knights were able to hold the lead despite the Belle’s hitting a .452 clip in the first set.  The second set was very hotly contested from the start.  Using a couple of mini service runs from junior Lizzie Kamp (Chicago Christian HS), the Knights built a 15-10 lead and never looked back.  The third set was much like the first.  Using a service run from junior Kelly Gordon (South Christian HS), Calvin built a 7-1 lead and only expanded that lead en route to the three set victory.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Compete at Michigan Intercollegiates at Hillsdale College

HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Michigan Intercollegiates on Friday at the Hayden Park cross country course on the campus of Hillsdale College. The competition included teams from around the state of Michigan from the NCAA Division I, II and III ranks as well as the NAIA level. On the men’s side, Calvin chose not to run its top group in order to prepare for the Wisconsin-Oshkosh pre-national meet next Saturday. Neverthless, the Knights still managed to finish fourth in the small college division behind Wayne State, Grand Valley State and host Hillsdale with a total of 148 points. Calvin’s top runner was junior Kevin Peterson with a time of 26:53 on the 8K course. In the women’s 5K race, Calvin took second in the small college division with 79 points with Saginaw Valley State winning with 62 points. Calvin also chose not to run all of its top seven on Friday with the Wisconsin-Oshkoh pre-national race looming next week. Calvin did run its top two runners in senior Jodi Hoekstra and junior Alyssa Penning and both individuals flashed fine form with Hoekstra taking second (18:22) and Penning third (18:28).

Amber Warners Joins 300-Win Club In Victory at Albion

ALBION, MI – Calvin head coach Amber Warners walked into Albion College’s Kresge Gymnasium Friday evening with 299 career collegiate coaching victories.  Behind the play of her top-ranked Knights, she was able to walk off with number 300 as Calvin defeated Albion in straight sets by scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-14. A 1990 Calvin College graduate, Warners is now 300-67 as a collegiate coach which includes 10 seasons at Calvin College and one season at Hope College. Heading into the 2011 season, Warners was ranked fourth among active NCAA III women’s volleyball coaches in terms of winning percentage.
