Calvin Volleyball Picks Up Midwest Invitational Victory over St. Benedict

Playing in the first match of the 2011 Midwest Invitational, the top-ranked Knights continued their unbeaten season with a three set victory over a feisty squad from St. Benedict, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-18. The Knights had a solid performance from the front lines in converting 38 of 89 hit attempts (.303 hit percentage) and racking up 11 total blocks for the match to St. Benedictís 3.  Senior Rebecca Kamp led the Knights with 12 kills, followed by fellow senior Erin Vanderplas who totaled 8 kills.  Senior Renee DeHaan and junior Lizzie Kamp both added 7 kills each from the attack as well.

Women’s Hoops Ranked 8th in Preseason Poll - Preseason All-America Honors for Carissa Verkaik

The Calvin womenís basketball team has been ranked eighth in the preseason issue of the Womenís Division III Newsletter. In addition, Calvin junior Carissa Verkaik has been named a preseason All-American by Womenís DIII News. A two-time MIAA MVP, Verkaik averaged 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.  A 6-2 center, Verkaik hails from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. A year ago, Calvin finished 25-5 overall, captured a share of the MIAA regular season title and claimed the MIAA Tournament crown . The Knights also reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament before falling to the University of Chicago. Chicago is ranked second in the preseason WDIII News poll. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the preseason WDIII News as Hope is ranked 13th. The Calvin womenís basketball team is scheduled to open practice for the upcoming season on Monday.

Men’s Basketball Ranked 18th by DIII News - Sporting News Pre-Season Honors for Tom Snikkers

The Calvin menís basketball team has been ranked 18th in the preseason edition of the Division III Newsletter. The Knights are one of two MIAA teams in the Top 25 as Hope is ranked 13th. In addition, Calvin junior Tom Snikkers has been named a preseason honorable mention Division III All-American by the Sporting News preseason basketball magazine. A 6-4 junior forward, Snikkers was named to the All-MIAA first team last year after averaging 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game. As a team, Calvin finished 16-12 last year and in second place in the MIAA.The Calvin menís basketball team is scheduled to open practice for the upcoming season tomorrow morning.

Calvin Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams Ready for 2011-12 Season

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open their seasons on October 22 when both teams compete at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center. On the men’s side, Calvin returns 16 letterwinners including 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Diver Andrew Krafft. A sophomore, Krafft is coming off a record-breaking 2011 season that saw him earn national runner-up honors on the one-meter board at the NCAA III Championships and a third place finish on the three-meter board. On the women’s side, Calvin returns 15 letterwinners led by junior Elizabeth Counsell who was named the 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer and junior Sam Klaasen who was named the 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Diver. Both individuals were All-MIAA selections with Counsell later earning NCAA III All-America honors in the 200 breaststroke.

Volleyball Team Rolls to Victory at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI Ė The Calvin womenís volleyball team took on the Hornets at Kalamazooís Anderson Athletic Complex Wednesday night.  Kalamazoo held to form, playing tough at home, but fell to the Knights in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-11.  Calvin was led by a trio of hitters.  Senior Rebecca Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) had 17 kills and four block assists.  Fellow senior Erin Vander Plas (Northern Michigan Christian HS) hit a .429 clip adding 12 kills of her own.  Lizzie Kamp added 11 kills.  Kelly Gordon led the Knights with 11 digs. Sophomore setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) dished out 44 assists (14.66 assists/set) while adding two solo blocks and two block assists. Calvin (19-0, 11-0 MIAA) is co-hosting the Midwest Tournament with Hope College this coming weekend.  The Knights will face four teams starting with St. Benedict at 3:00pm Friday.  The complete schedule can be found at: Midwest Tournament

Women’s Soccer Tripped Up at Alma by 2-0 Score

With a chance to move up in the standings with a win, the Knights fell short of the mark Wednesday at Alma, falling by a score of 2-0 off a pair of second half goals by Carly Reising (Otsego, MI) of the Scots.  The loss pushes Calvin to 6-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference. With fifth place Kalamazoo upsetting Adrian 1-0 on Wednesday as well, Calvin falls into a points tie with Kalamazoo for fourth place in the standings, but with the Knights owning the edge after defeating the Hornets last week 4-1. Calvin will next play on Saturday with a home contest against last-place Albion.

Men’s Cross Country Ranked Third/Women’s Cross Country Ranked Seventh in Latest Set of National Poll

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams continue to hold their spots in the latest set of national rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Calvin men are again ranked third while the Calvin women are again ranked seventh. North Central (IL) continues to be the top-ranked team on the men’s side while Williams (MA) has taken over the top spot in the women’s poll. Both Calvin teams are preparing to compete at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational this Saturday.

Men’s Soccer Claims 4-1 Win at Adrian - Now Ranked 24th in NSCAA Division III Top 25 Poll

ADRIAN - On a day when it moved back into the Division III Top 25 coaches’ rankings, the Calvin men’s soccer team also remained on top of the MIAA standings with a 4-1 victory at Adrian Tuesday evening. With the win, Calvin is now 10-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the MIAA. The Knights are one point ahead of second place Olivet and three points ahead of third place Hope and Trine. The Knights will travel to rival Hope on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. game. Earlier in the day, Calvin moved into the NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll for the first time in over a month as the Knights are ranked 24th in this week’s poll.

Volleyball Team Continues to Be Ranked Number-One in AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll

The Calvin women’s volleyball team continues to be the top-ranked team in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll. The Knights received 22 of a possible 24 first place votes in this week’s poll with second-ranked Washington University (Mo.) receiving the other two first place votes. Emory is ranked third followed by Wittenberg in the number-four spot. Of note, Carthage (Wisc.) is ranked 10th. Calvin will host Carthage Friday night as part of the Midwest Challenge hosted by Calvin. The Calvin-Carthage match will take place at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena Friday night. Calvin is back in action Wednesday night when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. match.

Jed Christiansen Third American at Chicago Marathon - Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials

Jed Christiansen, a 2010 Calvin College graduate, had the finest marathon performance of his running career this past weekend at the Chicago Marathon. A native of Greenville, Pennsylvania, Christiansen took 14th at the 2011 Chicago Marathon with a career-best time of 2:18.31, a pace of 5:18 per mile. Not only was Christiansen the 14th individual finisher at the Chicago Marathon, but he was also the third American finisher. His time was also a qualifying time for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials - scheduled for January 14 in Houston, Texas. A graduate of Greenville High School in Pennsylvania, Christiansen is the second Calvin alum to qualify for the upcoming U.S. Olympic trials as 2001 . Calvin graduate Paul Petersen also qualified with a time of 2:17.35 at the Boston Marathon this past April. Also of note, 2008 Calvin graduate Christina Overbeck was the 24th individual finisher on the women’s side with a time of 2:47.07. She was also the 10th American woman to finish the race. Her time was just shy of the “B” standard for the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials. At Calvin, Overbeck was an NCAA III All-American in both cross country and track and field.
