Men’s Golf Takes Seventh at First MIAA Jamboree

MARSHALL - After a weekend of finishing on top, the Calvin men’s golf team slipped to the back of the pack Thursday afternoon at the first MIAA Jamboree of the year. Thursday’s outing was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club and the Knights took seventh in the eight-team field with a team score of 335 strokes. Calvin had opened its season last weekend at the (non-conference) Olivet Comet Lou Collins Invitational, winning the tournament title for the first time in school history. Calvin was led individually by junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 80 that was good for a sixth place tie individually. Freshman Michael Wierenga (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was next with an 84 while senior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) had an 85, junior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) an 86 and freshman James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) an 88.

Men’s basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek has published his second book of devotionals for athletes

Men’s basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek has published his second book of devotionals for athletes.  Working with German professor emeritus Wally Bratt, Vande Streek took stories from the book of Joshua and used them to teach about commitment, encouragement, leadership, perseverance and teamwork.

Women’s Soccer Falls at Sixth-Ranked Wheaton

WHEATON, IL - Calvin dipped to 0-3 on the year with a 6-1 defeat at sixth-ranked Wheaton (IL) Wednesday afternoon. All three of Calvin’s defeats have come to nationally-ranked opponents this year as the Knights opened the season with a loss to 16th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) and then to ninth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. In Wednesday’s loss to Wheaton, Calvin trailed 4-0 at halftime and later trailed 5-0 before scoring in the 71st minute of play on a goal by junior Liz Cancel (St. Clair Shores/Fraser HS) with Cancel stealing the ball in the Wheaton defensive end and placing a shot just inside the far post. Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Augustana (IL) College at 5:30 p.m. at Zuidema Field.

Megan Rietema Named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week in Women’s volleyball

For the third time in her career, Megan Rietema has been named the MIAA’s Specialty Player of the Week. Rietema, a sophomore from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS) , dished out 138 assists (9.8 per game) and added 22 kills for a hitting percentage of .365 as the defending national champion Knights opened their season with four straight wins in a tournament at Thomas More, Ky. She also had 30 digs and 21 blocks during the tournament.

Carlia Canto Claims Medalist Honors at North Central College Classic - Calvin Ties For Sixth as Team

NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin women’s golf team finished tied for sixth in a 13-team field at the North Central College Classic Tuesday afternoon with a team score of 375 strokes. Calvin sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led all golfers by earning medalist honors with a round of 83. Next for Calvin were freshman Laura Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) with a 96 and junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 97. Freshman Jaclyn Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) rounded out Calvin’s finishers with a 99.

Top-Ranked Volleyball Team Opens MIAA Campaign with Victory Over Albion

In their home and conference opener, the top-ranked Knights’ rolled by Albion for a three-set victory. Calvin (5-0, 1-0 MIAA) opened the first set on a roll, scoring 16 straight points before the Britons got on the board.  Sophomore Kristi Zietse served 15 of the points, giving the Knights a commanding lead.  Calvin wouldn’t stop there, as sophomore Jen Pluymert added another service run.  The Knights’ front row was also strong, hitting a collective .609 in the first set.

Calvin To Join MIAA in Adding Men’s, Women’s Lacrosse As Varsity Sports in 2012-13

Calvin College will be adding men’s and women’s lacrosse as varsity sports effective with the 2012-13 academic year. The announcement is made in conjunction with the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association which announced today that the league will add men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse as varsity conference sports, effective with the 2012-13 season, the 125th anniversary season for America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference. Calvin has been a member of the MIAA since the 1953-54 academic year.

Men’s Golf Captures Title of Lou Collins Memorial Tournament

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men’s golf team completed a big weekend at the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Invitational, winning the tournament with a two-day total of 597 strokes. Calvin has competed at the tournament for several years and it is believed that this is the first time the Knights have finished as tournament champions. Calvin opened the tournament with a team score of 300 on Friday and came back with a sizzling score of 297 on Saturday. The two-day total of 597 allowed the Knights to finish four strokes ahead of non-conference rival Wheaton.

Volleyball Captures Title of Thomas More Invitational - Rebecca Kamp Named MVP

Crestview Hills, KY - Calvin entered the second day of the Thomas More Invitational with a perfect record of 2-0, and finished the day with its perfect record intact at 4-0 Calvin took on Transylvania University at 10:00am Saturday morning. The match was over soon after it started.  Calvin jumped out to big leads in all three sets.  The block of the Knights was too much for Transylvania, and it failed to record more than 20 points in any of the three sets.  Calvin won by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-14. Calvin then came back to top Otterbein 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19. Rebecca Kamp was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by Lizzie Kamp and Megan Rietema.

Men’s Soccer Rolls To Win Over St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY - Calvin picked up its first victory of the year with a 5-0 victory over St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon at the Flower City Classic hosted by the University of Rochester. Calvin blew the game open with four second half goals with sophomore Zach Willis (Grandville/Unity Christian HS) netting a pair. Senior Tyler Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) put Calvin on the board with a goal in the 28th minute of play, converting a feed from senior Willis on a two-on-one breakaway. Five minutes into the second half, junior Chris Nance (Washington, MI/Warred DeLaSalle HS) converted a penalty kick and the rout was on.
Calvin is back in action next Friday as it travels to Aurora University for a 5:30 p.m. (EST) contest in suburban Chicago.
