After a 5-0 conference opening win against Adrian this past Tuesday, the men’s soccer team was looking to continue its strong offensive play as it hosted the Wheaton Thunder in the first round game of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Calvin did just that, defeating Wheaton 2-1 at Calvin’s Zuidema Field to extend its winning streak over the Thunder to four games. Sophomore Lawrence Murray scored on a free kick late in the first half to give the Knights a 1-0 lead and senior Tyler Vegter later ripped in a feed from younger brother (freshman) Travis Vegter in the second half to put the Knights up 2-0. Wheaton cut the deficit in half on a goal with seven minutes left in regulation but the Knights held fast from there to gain the win. Junior Michael Dolan had one save for Calvin to gain the win in goal.

This fall, the Calvin men’s soccer team will honor the late Dr. Marv Zuidema in a unique way after each and every home game. The team, along with family and friends, will replace divots on the field that bears his name. The tradition began when Zuidema was a coach and will continue even though the legendary coach passed away earlier this summer. An accomplished educator, coach, and administrator, Zuidema was passionate about replacing divots in the field immediately after soccer games. Even days after games, Zuidema could be seen walking about the field, fixing the turf.

Responding to last Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Dominican, the Knights took their conference and home opener convincingly on Tuesday, defeating Adrian by a score of 5-0. Calvin established possession early and looked effortless in peppering Bulldogs freshman keeper James Ruby from the onset. In the 18th minute, the Knights got on the board off a well-executed set piece. Junior Chris Nance lined up to take a corner kick with freshman Dino Duratovic as a short option. Nance touched the ball to Duratovic, who settled it for Nance to play a cross. Junior Joe Broekhuizen then used his head to redirect the ball into the back netting and give the Knights the only goal they’d need.« First < 2 3 4 5 6 > Last »
