The Calvin men’s soccer team picked up a key 2-0 early-season victory over rival Hope Wednesday afternoon in front of more than 1,200 fans at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. With a four-game road trip looming, the Knights needed to protect home field and did just that against the Flying Dutchmen as the Knights scored two second half goals to gain the win. Junior Chris Nance put Calvin on the board with a blast from the right wing five minutes into the second half and junior Mike Sanderson added a goal for the Knights in the 70th minute of play, tapping in a pass from sophomore Zach Willis after Willis had broken free up the sideline on a breakaway. Calvin junior goalkeeper Michael Dolan was superb through the first 80 minutes for the Knights with five saves while senior Jared Rushlau went the final 10 minutes for the Knights who are now 6-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAA. By Sports Information Student Assistant Mitch Blankespoor

SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Calvin College women’s volleyball team looked to continue its season without blemish.  The Knights had made it through the first day of the Great Lakes Regional Challenge which included a thrilling five-set victory over the third-ranked Wittenberg Tigers.  Calvin avoided the let down, and returned to Grand Rapids with a 4-0 record. The Knights first opponent of the day was the Heidelberg Student Princes; a very familiar opponent for Calvin.  A year ago, “The Berg” defeated Calvin in five sets at this very same tournament before falling to Calvin in the regional semifinal.  Despite some uncharacteristic communication errors, the top-ranked Knights defeated the Student Princes in four sets by scores of 25-11, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18. Calvin then defeated Ohio Northern in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-16. Rebecca Kamp, Lizzie Kamp, and Megan Rietema were named to the all-tournament team. Calvin will return to action on Tuesday when it faces the Comets of Olivet College.

With less than four minutes remaining, freshman Dino Duratovic snuck a ball past Madonna’s keeper Adrian Motta to give the Knights a lead.  Prior to that, the Knights and Crusaders battled out a methodical, if not disjointed, game. Calvin and Hope both finished 2-0-0 in the weekend tournament but Hope won the tournament based on goal differential as the Flying Dutchmen outscored their weekend opponents by six goals while Calvin outscored the opposition by two goals.
