Coming off a stellar season that included an MIAA tournament title and an undefeated home record, the 2011 Calvin Women’s soccer program looks again to get back on the pitch and replicate its success this upcoming fall. Despite losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last November, the Knights still boasted a 15-3-2 record and certainly will look to maintain the confidence with which they finished the 2010 season. With the tradition that Calvin soccer offers, there are always talented freshmen looking to make their mark on the team, and having lost the past senior class of six players to graduation, this year should provide plenty of opportunities for playing time among what is ultimately a very young lineup.

The Calvin men’s golf team will enter the 2011 MIAA season like no previous Calvin team before. For the first time the Knights will enter conference play as defending MIAA champions. Calvin captured the 2010 MIAA title in improbable fashion, overcoming a 19-stroke deficit on the final day of the league season to edge Trine by two strokes for the MIAA Championship – the first in Calvin men’s golf history. As MIAA champions, the Knights garnered the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Championships in the spring, finishing 26th out of 40 teams.

With four returning letterwinners and an incoming freshmen class of five student-athletes, the Calvin women’s golf team will feature one of its largest rosters in recent memory. Calvin will open its season on September 6 at a tournament hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The Knights will then compete at the two-day (September 9 and 10) Olivet Invitational and will later compete at the Alma Invitational on September 24. There will also be four league tournaments beginning on September 15 at Trine’s Zollner Golf Course. The 36-hole MIAA (fall) Tournament will take place on October 7 and 8 at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek. The top four teams in the final fall standings will then be eligible to compete for the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament when the league holds three qualifying rounds in the spring.

The 2010 Calvin volleyball season is best described as an up and down season. The lowest point of the 2010 season came on November 6th at the DeVos Fieldhouse. The Knights had just been beat in straight sets by the Hope College Flying Dutch in the MIAA Tournament Final. “Right after that match, I doubted our team’s ability to win a big match. But after we talked in the locker room, I could see the desire in the girl’s eyes. We didn’t want our season to end.” Head coach Amber Warners recalled. She proved to be right, and the high point of Calvin’s season came sixteen days later on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. The Knights hoisted the NCAA III national championship trophy after a four set victory over top ranked Emory University (GA).

After two consecutive NCAA tournament runs and an elite eight finish last year, the Knights’ soccer program is on the precipice of annual national contention. Sustaining that success, and ultimately improving on it, makes for a daunting challenge, but Coach Chris Hughes, who remains confident in both his returning and incoming talent, is eager to see what transpires on the field of play. Last season’s team finished 16-3-5 and 9-2-3 in conference. The Knights extended their streak of conference titles to four years and enter this year the seventh ranked team in the country, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
