COMSTOCK PARK - The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Aquinas College at Fifth/Third Ballpark Tuesday afternoon. The Knights dropped game one by an 8-3 score and then fell in game two 5-1. Calvin is now 19-17 on the year heading into a four-game weekend series with Alma. The Knights will host Alma on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and will then travel to Alma on Saturday for a 1 p.m. twinbill.

Calvin College women’s basketball coach John Ross has been named the Women’s College Coach of the Year by the (BCAM) Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. It marks the second time that Ross has been so honored as he also received the award in 2007. The award honors a women’s basketball coach at a four-year institution in the state of Michigan and includes schools at the NCAA I, II and III levels as well as at the NAIA level. Ross is one of four Michigan collegiate coaches to be honored by BCAM as Gary Bailey of Grace Bible College is the Men’s College Coach of the Year while Jason Cooper of Lake Michigan Community College is the Women’s Junior College Coach of the Year and Dick Shilts of Kalamazoo Valley Community College the Men’s Junior College Coach of the Year.

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out action on Saturday at the Hillsdale Gina Relays and at the Aquinas College Quad. At Hillsdale on Saturday, the women’s team had a strong day of competition. In the 800 meters, freshman Olivia Butler had a season-best time of 2:17.90 in the 800 meters while freshman teammate Rebekah Folkema was close behind in a time of 2:19.30 and senior Kristen Fletcher on Folkema’s heels with a season-best time of 2:19.69. At the Aquinas College Quad held at Houseman Field on the north side of Grand Rapids, the Calvin men also turned in several strong performances. Sophomore Aaron Meckes took first place in the shot put with a season-best toss of 50-1 3/4 while also winning the discus with a throw of 136-6. Sophomore Kyle Jasperse won the triple jump with a leap of 43-5 while freshman Matt Christians was third in the high jump (6-3 1/4). In addition, sophomore Adam DeYoung won the javelin (136-7) while freshman Calvin Kuyers had a season-best time of 56.12 in the 400 meter hurdles.Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Field Day on May 5 and 6 at Olivet College.« First < 2 3 4
