Softball Falls to UW-Oshkosh 7-4 at Illinois Wesleyan Tourney

BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Calvin softball team dropped its opening game at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament, falling to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 7-4. Oshkosh scored two runs in the firt, two in th second and one in the third to grab a 5-0 lead. Calvin came back with a run in the fourth and three in the sixth as junior Marie Prins hit her second homerun of the season while freshman Lina Avila belted a three-run homer - her fifth of the year in the sixth. Oshkosh (13-5) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth however to stay ahead of the Knights. The Knights will face host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. rematch against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Men’s Tennis Splits Matches at GLCA Tournament

LANSING - The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of matches at the GLCA Tournament on Friday, defeating Ohio Wesleyan 8-1 before falling to nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon 6-1. The Knights will face Oberlin College in a Saturday morning match at 9 a.m. at the Markin (indoor) Tennis Center on the campus of Kalamazoo College.
Baseball Moves Into Third Place Tie in MIAA Standings With Doubleheader Sweep at Albion

ALBION - Calvin moved into a tie for third place in the MIAA baseball standings with a doubleheader sweep at Albion Friday afternoon. Calvin claimed game one 7-5 behind a complete-game pitching performance from senior Keith Spoelstra and then took game two 9-2 behind a complete-game pitching effort from senior Peter Steiner. The Knights are now 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the MIAA standings, good for tie for third place with rival Hope.
Second Game Softball Rally Comes Up Just Short Against Nationally-Ranked Adrian

The Calvin softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader against nationally-ranked and unbeaten Adrian College Thursday afternoon at Gainey Field. Adrian took the opener 10-0 in five innings but then needed a seventh-inning rally to top the Knights 2-1 in game two. In the opener, Adrian collected 11 hits and used five Calvin errors to pull away for the win. In game two however, Calvin sophomore starter Shelby Mast pitched a gem, allowing just one run over the first six innings with Calvin tying the game in the top of the sixth on a two-out single to right by freshman Lina Avila that brought home junior Marie Prins. Adrian countered with a two-out rally of its own in the seventh, using a single and a triple to win the game. Calvin (4-12 overall, 2-2 MIAA) will now prepare to compete at a weekend tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University.

ALBION - The Albion women’s tennis team handed Calvin its first conference defeat in two years Wednesday at Albion’s Ungrodt Tennis Center, defeating the Knights 6-3. With the win, Albion moves to 3-0 in league play while Calvin fall to 1-1 in the league and 4-7 overall. Calvin grabbed the early advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles but Albion struck back with five singles victories with Calvin’s only singles point coming from senior Melissa Oosterhouse who picked up a hard-fought three-set win over longtime rival Shelly Zamler. Oosterhouse is now 23-3 all-time in singles play in MIAA dual match competition. Calvin returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Trine for a 1 p.m. MIAA dual match.

KENTWOOD - The Calvin men’s tennis team picked up a hard-fought 6-3 non-conference win over Davenport University Wednesday afternoon at the MVP Sportsplex. The Knights are now 8-5 on the year. Calvin took two of the three doubles points and then split the six singles points to gain the victory. Calvin will now prepare to compete at the GLCA Tournament at Albion College Friday and Saturday. Calvin will open the tournament against eighth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan at 9 a.m.

The first set of Division III Top 25 rankings for outdoor track and field have been released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association and both Calvin teams are ranked in the top 25. The Calvin women’s track and field is ranked ninth in the women’s poll while the Calvin men’s track and field team is ranked 21st. In addition, the Calvin women are ranked number-one in the women’s Great Lakes Regional poll while the Calvin men are ranked third in the men’s Great Lakes Regional poll.

Softball Sweeps Doubleader at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO—The Calvin softball team opened its 2011 MIAA campaign with a doubleheader sweep at Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon, winning by scores of 9-1 and 8-0. Sophomore Shelby Mast struck out 11 in a complete-game pitching victory in game one while freshman Danae Miedema had a complete-game pitching victory in game two. Freshman Shelby Sheehan had five hits in the twinbill while sophomore Lina Avila had four hits including her team-leading fourth home run of the spring. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd also belted her second homerun of the spring during the doubleheader. Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Adrian in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

The Calvin’s men’s tennis team welcomed the Alma Scots to Grand Rapids on Tuesday afternoon for their MIAA conference tennis match. The Knights defeated Alma by a score of 8-1 to improve to 2-0 in the MIAA. Because of weather, the match could not be played outside at Strikwerda Tennis Center. Instead, the match was played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights will host Davenport on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then take on Ohio Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. on Friday in a first round match of the GLCA Tournament hosted by Albion College.
Keith Spoelstra Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in Baseball

Calvin College senior Keith Spoelstra has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball. Spoelstra, a native of Oakland, N.J. (Eastern Christian HS), had two complete-game performances on the mound for the Knights last week, including a three-hit shutout of Hope, 3-0. Spoelstra walked one and struck out three against the Flying Dutchmen. He also had a five-hitter in a 4-2 loss to Adrian. Spoelstra, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time in his career, held opposing batters to a .186 batting average in the two games.
