Softball Drops Both Ends of a Doubleheader at Hope

HOLLAND - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at rival Hope Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-4 and 6-0. Calvin used a late rally in game one to tie the game 4-4 and had runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh but could not take the lead. Hope then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. All five of Hope’s runs in game one were unearned as the Knights committed six errors. Calvin collected seven hits in game one including a two-run homer by freshman Lina Avila in the sixth. The homer was the sixth of the spring for Avila. In game two, Hope limited Calvin to just three hits while scoring four runs in the second and two more in the fifth. Calvin (4-18 overall, 2-4 MIAA) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Finlandia University in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

Women’s Tennis Defeats Olivet in MIAA Dual Match

EAST LANSING - Calvin picked up an 8-1 conference win over Olivet Tuesday afternoon to improve to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in MIAA action. The Knights are one match behind MIAA co-leaders Hope and Albion. Calvin hosts Adrian on Thursday and Hope on Saturday. In its win over Olivet, Calvin swept the three doubles points and then claimed the top five singles flights. Olivet’s lone win came at No. 6 singles in a three-set match. The remaining five Calvin singles points were decided in straight sets. Thursday’s home match against Adrian is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Men’s Golf Captures Vic Cuiss Invitational Title

JACKSON - The Calvin men’s golf team captured the Vic Cuiss Invitational title Monday with a team score of 312 strokes at the Jackson Country Club. Calvin tied Spring Arbor for first place but won the tournament crown on a tiebreaker as Calvin’s fifth score was higher than Spring Arbor’s fifth score. The four scores from a lineup of five determine the final team score. Calvin’s fifth and tie-breaking score belong to freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had a round of 83. Calvin’s top individual on Monday was sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who carded a round of 76 while senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had rounds of 78. Kuiper, Hendriksma and Ryzenga were all named to the all-tournament team. Calvin returns to action next Monday when it competes at the Furniture City Classic at the Quail Ridge Golf Club beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Andrew Bosma Named MIAA Position Player of the Week in Baseball

Calvin College senior Andrew Bosma has been named the MIAA Position Player of the Week in baseball. A senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), Bosma went 8-for-13 at the plate for a .615 average with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights took three out of four MIAA games from Albion last week. He went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 9-3 win over the Britons. Bosma is being honored as Position Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Calvin Track and Field Teams Record Solid Weekend of Performances

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams had a solid Saturday of competition as a large group of Calvin athletes compete at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational while a smaller distance group competed at the Miami University Red Hawk Invitational. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Jamboree scheduled for next Saturday at Adrian College.

Women’s Tennis Defeats Trine in MIAA Match

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin improved to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in league play with a 9-0 win at Trine University Saturday afternoon. Senior Melissa Oosterhouse picked up a victory at No. 1 singles to improve to 11-1 on the season and run her singles win streak to eight matches. Oosterhouse is now 70-7 all-time in singles play. Calvin will travel to Olivet next Tuesday for a 4 p.m. conference match.

KALAMAZOO - Calvin picked up an 8-1 victory over Oberlin College in its final match at the GLCA Tournament. The Knights are now 10-6 overall and have reached the double-digit mark in victories for the eighth consecutive year. Calvin grabbed a quick 3-0 lead with a sweep in doubles play and then won five of the remaining six singles flights with senior Roland Eldridge, sophomore Brian DeMaagd, sophomore Preston Phillips, sophomore Jarrod Brower and sophomore Philip Reinken all grabbing singles wins. Calvin returns to play on April 13 when it hosts Kalamazoo College at 4 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, IL - Calvin dropped a pair of games at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday, falling to the host Titans 9-4 and then falling to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 1-2. Calvin hit a pair of homeruns on Saturday - one by Bekah Kline and the other by Marie Prins. The Knights have now hit 15 homeruns as a team this year. Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a 3:30 p.m. contest.

Calvin split a home doubleheader Saturday against Albion but still won 3 of 4 overall against the Britons after dropping an extra-innings thriller in the first game and winning the second game by a 9-3 score. The Knights remain tied in the MIAA standings with Hope College at 6-6 in league play.
