Baseball Takes Both Ends of a Doubleheader From Visiting Olivet

The Calvin baseball team bumped back above the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon, defeating the Comets 7-4 and 4-2 at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 15-13 overall and 10-8 in league play. Calvin received complete-game pitching performances from senior righthanders Keith Spoelstra and Peter Steiner in the twinbill. Spoelstra is now 20-9 in his career at Calvin on the mound while Steiner is 22-8. Steiner helped his own cause in game two by belting a tie-breaking two-run RBI double in the fifth inning. In game one, junior Scott Tipton went 3-for-3 with two doubles while senior Andrew Bosma had an RBI triple.

Baseball Defeats Davenport

Calvin got back to the .500 mark with an 8-5 non-conference win over Davenport University Thursday afternoon at Calvin Field. The Knights are now 13-13 on the year, heading into a four-game weekend series with Olivet. Calvin used a six-run third inning uprising to take command of Thursday’s non-conference contest. Davenport (23-13) scored two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead but the Knights tied it with a pair in the bottom of the second as freshman Dan Happ singled in a run and freshman Trent Zwiers drove in another with a suicide squeeze bunt. In the third, Calvin used four hits and three walks to take an 8-2 lead.

Mast Tosses One-Hit Shutout As Softball Splits With Olivet

Calvin rode the right arm of sophomore pitcher Shelby Mast to gain a doubleheader split over visiting Olivet Thursday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Mast tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout in the opener Thursday as the Knights gained a 2-0 victory. She then allowed just five hits and one run in game two but the one run proved to be enough for Olivet as it held on for a 1-0 win over the Knights. The game one victory by Calvin allowed the Knights to snap a 10-game losing streak. Calvin is now 3-5 in the MIAA, good for sixth place in the current league standings.

Men’s Tennis Defeats Adrian

Calvin bumped its season record to 13-7 overall and to 4-1 in the MIAA. The Knights have one league dual match left before the conference tournament and that match will take place against rival Hope next Tuesday in Holland. Both teams will head into the Tuesday tilt with 4-1 league records with the Tuesday match likely determing second place in the league standings and the second seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. In its victory over Adrian on Thursday, Calvin rolled to straight sets victories in all three doubles flights and in all six singles flights.

Women’s Tennis Edged by Nationally-Ranked Grand Valley State on Senior Day

The Calvin women’s tennis team played host to the undefeated Grand Valley State Lakers on Wednesday afternoon.  The game was played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center due to weather. This was a special day for three Calvin seniors.  Wednesday marked the last time that Melissa Oosterhouse, Kaitlyn Spoelhof, and Michelle Busscher would play a match in a Calvin uniform in Grand Rapids. These three seniors would prove to be very helpful to the Knights.  Calvin lost the match 5-4 to the Lakers, ranked 16th nationally in NCAA Division II tennis, and it was only fitting that the seniors scored the only four points for the Knights.

Team Spirit Runs Wild Within Calvin Cross Country/Track & Field Programs

By the traditional sense of the term, Track and Field and Cross Country are not team sports.  Outside of relays, the sports are designed for the individual. Talk to members of Calvin’s Cross Country or Track and Field teams, and you’ll likely think otherwise.  In building a tradition-steeped program, the Knights’ have relied heavily on team spirit and encouragement.

Calvin Alumn Paul Petersen Is Third American Finisher at Boston Marathon - Qualifies for Trials

BOSTON - Paul Petersen, a 2001 Calvin College graduate, had the finest marathon performance of his running career Monday morning at the Boston Marathon. A native of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Petersen took 17th at the 2011 Boston Marathon with a career-best time of 2:17.35. Not only was Petersen the 17th individual finisher at the Boston Marathon, but he was also the third American finisher.His time was also a qualifying time for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in Houston, Texas. A graduate of Southmont High School, Petersen also qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in New York City where he clocked a time of 2:22.34.

Men’s Tennis Defeats Spring Arbor 7-2 in Non-Conference Match

LANSING - Calvin upped its overall record to 12-7 with a 7-2 victory over Spring Arbor University Tuesday afternoon inside the Lansing Michigan Athletic Club. The match began in reverse order as the six singles flights were completed before the doubles action began. Calvin jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind victories from sophomore Brian DeMaagd at No. 3 singles, sophomore Preston Phillips at No. 4 singles, freshman Loukas Peterson at No. 5 singles and sophomore Philip Reinken at No. 6 singles. The Knights then clinched the match by sweeping all three doubles flights.
Calvin is back in action on Thursday, hosting Adrian at 4 p.m. in an MIAA conference match.

Women’s Tennis Defeated by Saint Mary’s 5-4

The Calvin women’s tennis team played host to the Saint Mary’s Belles on Monday afternoon.  The match was played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center due to weather.  The Saint Mary Belle’s game into Grand Rapids and defeated the Knights 5-4 in a hotly contested match.The loss drops the Knights to 4-3 in the conference and 7-9 overall.  They will be back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Grand Valley State.

Women’s Track and Field Team Wins MIAA Jamboree Title

ADRIAN, MI - The Calvin women’s track and field team took another step forward towards extending its current 21-year MIAA championship streak as the Knights took first place at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College on Saturday. Calvin posted a first place total of 996 points with Hope second with 933.5 points. The MIAA Jamboree - held in mid-April each year, is worth 50 percent of the final MIAA standings with the MIAA Field Day worth the remaining 50 percent. The 2011 MIAA Field Day is scheduled for May 5 and 6 at Olivet College.
