ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin softball squad suffered a pair of tough defeats at the hands of the Trine Thunder on Friday. The Knights were defeated by Trine 4-0 in game one and then fell 13-0 in game two. Calvin closes out its season on Saturday, hosting Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m.
Women’s Tennis Defeats Alma in MIAA Regular Season Finale - Finishes 3rd in MIAA

EAST LANSING - The Calvin women’s tennis team closed out its MIAA regular season campaign with a 5-4 victory over Alma Wednesday afternoon in a match played at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Center. Calvin finishes in a three-way tie for third place in the final MIAA regular season standings with Saint Mary’s and Kalamazoo. The Knights are currently 8-10 on the season. Calvin returns to action on Friday when it competes at the MIAA Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo College. Calvin will be the fourth seed for the tournament and will face fifth-seeded Saint Mary’s in a first round match Friday morning.

Men’s Golf Ties For Second at Own Knight Invitational

PIERSON—Slogging through on-and-off again rain showers, trhe Calvin men’s golf team tied for second at its own Knight Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Pilgrim’s Run Golf Course, posting a team score of 314 strokes. Davenport took first with 307 strokes while Calvin and Cornerstone tied for second. Calvin’s top individual finisher was senior Jess Hendriksma who took second with an even-par round of 73. Senior Eric Doezema was next at 79 with sophomore Ben Kuiper carding an 80, freshman Ross Ryzenga an 82 and sophomore Dave Sarkipato an 87.
Men’s Tennis Claims Second Place in MIAA With Win at Rival Hope

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s tennis team picked up an all-important 8-1 victory at rival Hope Tuesday afternoon to finish second in the final MIAA regular season standings and also gain the second seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. The Knights finish the MIAA regular season 5-1, one win ahead of 4-2 Hope. The Knights are also now 14-7 overall heading into the MIAA Tournament. Calvin will open MIAA Tournament play on Friday against Adrian in a first round tournament match. Albion will host the MIAA Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Peter Steiner Named MIAA Co-Position Player of the Week in Baseball

For the first time in his career, Calvin College senior Peter Steiner has been named the MIAA’s Position Player of the Week in baseball. Steiner shares the award this week with Trine’s Zach Ebersole. Steiner, a senior from Chicago, Ill. (Glenbrook South HS), went 3-for-9 at the plate for a .333 average with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights swept a four-game series from Olivet. He delivered a game-winning two-run double on Friday in a 4-2 win over the Comets, then belted a two-run homer that was the difference the next day in a 3-2 victory. Steiner also stole three bases and drew three walks in the series, and pitched a complete-game victory in the 4-2 win, scattering eight hits.

The Calvin softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked and league-leading Alma Monday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. In game one, Calvin dropped a 4-0 decision. in game two, Calvin fell by a 6-1 score. the Knights are now 4-8 in league play heading into a conference doubleheader at Trine Wednesday afternoon.
Baseball Sweeps Four-Game Series From Olivet

OLIVET – Calvin completed a four-game weekend sweep of Olivet Saturday afternoon, defeating the Comets 3-2 and 5-3 in a conference doubleheader. The pair of victories came on the heels of a doubleheader sweep over Olivet Friday afternoon that saw the Knights win by scores of 7-4 and 4-2. Calvin is now 17-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 12-8 conference record.
Softball Splits Doubleheader at Albion

ALBION - A dramatic two-run eighth inning allowed Calvin to gain a doubleheader split at Albion Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd looped a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Calvin to a 6-5 game two victory. The win allowed the Knights to salvage a split after falling in Saturday’s opener 3-2. DeWeerd had a bid day at the plate, going 5-for-8 during the twinbill with three runs batted in. In the opener, she belted her third homerun of the spring - a solo shot in the second - that lifted Calvin into a 1-0 lead.
Calvin Track & Field Teams Compete at Grand Rapids Open

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College Saturday afternoon at Houseman Field.The Calvin women’s team had a strong showing in the 400 meter hurdles as senior Rachel Boerner won the event with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:02.97. Junior Jordan Gabrielse was third (1:06.14) and freshman Hillary Banning fifth (1:09.61). Other first place performances for the Calvin women included senior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put (44-0 1/2), sophomore Carissa Verkaik in the high jump (5-3) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Boerner, Gabrielse, freshman Julie Busscher and freshman Rebekah Folkema in a time of 4:03.01. On the men’s side, sophomore Aaron Meckes won the shot put (48-4) and was second in the discus (139-10).
