Calvin Sending Four To NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will be sending a combined four individuals to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday. The national meet will be hosted by Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Representing the Calvin women’s team will be seniors Rachel Boerner and Sarah Reasoner. Representing the Calvin men’s team will be junior Nick Kramer and sophomore Greg Whittle.

Women’s Basketball Defeated by University of Chicago 67-62 in Second Round NCAA III Tournament Game

Despite overcoming a large deficit in the second half, the Knights missed keys shots down the stretch and were unable to secure a lead in the final minutes of the game as a very talented and physical University of Chicago team defeated Calvin 67-62 Saturday evening in a second round NCAA III Tournament game Saturday night at Van Noord Arena. Chicago entered the game ranked fifth in the Division III Coaches poll and sixth by d3hoops.com. Calvin came in ranked 13th in the Division III Coaches poll and 18th by d3hoops.com Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 7 big blocks on defense.  Courtney Kurncz added 11 points, Jill Thomas chipped in 8, and Ally Wolffis and Julia Hilbrands both finished with 7 each for the Knights.

Boerner Qualifies for NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships - Whittle Makes a Bid

NAPERVILLE, IL—Rachel Boerner punched her ticket to next week’s NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday night and Greg Whittle most likely did too. Boerner posted an NCAA III Indoor track and field automatic qualifying time at the North Central College Last-Chance Invitational Friday night while Whittle had a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time. The NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held next Friday and Saturday at Capital University in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Boerner won the 400 meters in an automatic qualifying time of 56.38. Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) is the defending national indoor and outdoor champion in the 400 meters. On the men’s side, Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) hopes to make his first trip to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships after winning the mile run Friday night in a provisional qualifying time of 4:11.96.

Baseball Team Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Centre College

DANVILLE. KY - The Calvin baseball team traveled south for its first competition of the year and dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Centre College Friday night, falling 4-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two. In game one, senior Keith Spoelstra took the loss while senior Peter Steiner had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Steiner took the mound for game two and took the loss. Junior catcher Scott Tipton accounted for Calvin’s lone run with a solo homer.Calvin was scheduled to face Centre College today at 4:30 p.m. but the game has been cancelled because of thunderstorm that swept through Danville, Kentucky. Calvin will now prepare for its spring trip to Tucson, Arizona. The trip will begin on March 18 when the Knights take on Norwich College in a doubleheader.

Women’s Tennis Tops Davenport 6-3 For First Win of Young Season

The Calvin women’s tennis team gained its first victory of the year, defeating Davenport University 6-3 Friday afternoon at Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights are now 1-2 on the year. Calvin opened the match in strong fashion by gaining wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with seniors Melissa Oosterhoue and Kaitlin Spoelhof combining for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and senior Michelle Busscher and sophomore Elise Doezema gaining a win at No. 2 doubles. Calvin then clinched the win with victories at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Chicago Rolls To Win Over Hanover in First Round of NCAA III Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - The fifth-ranked Chicago Maroons used the sister tandem of Meghan and Mogan Herrick to roll to a 76-62 win over Hanover College in a first round NCAA III Tournament at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena Friday night. Meghan Herrick exploded for a game-high 25 points on 10 of 14 shooting while sister Morgan Herrick had 13 points as Chicago led 44-27 at halftime and was never seriously threatened by Hanover (25-2). Junior center Taylor Simpson was also a force for Chicago with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hanover was led by Molly Martin with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Torin Franz chipped in with 11 points.

Women’s Basketball Rolls to 73-37 Win Over La Roche in First Round of NCAA III Tournament

After defeating rival Hope College in the MIAA Tournament Championship to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament, the Calvin Knights defended its home turf and won a decisive first round NCAA III Tournament victory over La Roche College, defeating the Red Hawks by a score of 73-37. Despite being subbed out a majority of the second half, sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland, MI) led the Knights with what was just shy of a triple double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 blocks. Sophomore Ally Wolffis added 10 points. The Knights will face fifth-ranked Chicago in a second round game at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Chicago defeated Hanover 76-62 in Friday’s initial first round game.

Women’s Basketball Preview For NCAA III Regional at Calvin College March 4 and 5

The Calvin women’s basketball team has been selected to host a four-team NCAA III Tournament regional this Friday and Saturday (March 4 and 5) at Van Noord Arena. Calvin (24-4) will face LaRoche (23-4) College (PA) in a first round game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. while the University of Chicago (22-3) will face Hanover (25-1) College at 5 p.m. in Friday’s opening first round game. Friday’s winning teams will play each other on Saturday in the regional final at 7 p.m. (EST). The following is a team-by-team capsule of each of the four teams competing this weekend beginning in alphabetical order.

Verkaik & Wolffis Receive All-MIAA Honors in Women’s Hoops - Verkaik Repeats as MIAA MVP

For the second consecutive year, Calvin College sophomore center Carissa Verkaik has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in women’s basketball. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is the fourth individual from Calvin to earn MIAA MVP honors during the MIAA winter sports season and is the second from Holland Christian High School to do so as her former high school classmate Samantha Klaasen was named the MIAA Women’s Most Valuable Diver a week ago. Verkaik has also been named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year and is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by sophomore forward Ally Wolffis. Wolffis hails from Muskegon and is a graduate of Muskegon Mona Shores High School. Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Calvin women’s basketball team captured a share of its 12th MIAA regular season title and its first since 2007 by finishing 15-1 in league play, sharing the crown with Hope. Calvin then captured its first MIAA Tournament title since 2005 last Saturday, defeating Hope 67-65 in the MIAA Tournament finals.

Tom Snikkers Named to All-MIAA First Team in Men’s Basketball - Danny Rodts Named to Second Team

For the first time in his career, Calvin College sophomore forward Tom Snikkers has been named to the All-MIAA first team in men’s basketball. A native of Jenison and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Snikkers holds a unique distinction this year as his older sister Carrie Snikkers has been named to the All-MIAA first team in women’s basketball as a member of the Hope College women’s basketball team. The brother/sister combo is the first in MIAA history to receive All-MIAA first team honors in men’s/women’s basketball. In addition, Calvin senior Danny Rodts has been named to the All-MIAA second team. A native of Niles and a graduate of Niles High School, Rodts averaged 12.1 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Rodts is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the first time. Under the direction of head coach Kevin Vande Streek, the Calvin men’s basketball team finished 16-12 overall and in second place in the final MIAA regular season standings with a 9-5 conference mark.
