BIG RAPIDS - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision at Ferris State University Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 1-3 on the year. Ferris State (17-4) rolled to quick wins in doubles play and kept the pressure on in singles. Calvin returns to action next Monday when it takes on George Fox College in a match in Orlando, Florida. While in Orlando, Calvin is also scheduled to face Huntingdon, St. Olaf, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Luther.

Calvin College sophomore Tom Snikkers has been named to the d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region third team. A native of Jenison and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Snikkers is receiving all-region honors for the first time in his collegiate career. Snikkers led Calvin in scoring and rebounding this year, averaging 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game while connecting on 47.9 percent of his field goal attempts and 77.9 percent of his free throw attempts. He notched double-digits in scoring in 25 of Calvin’s 28 games this year and four double-doubles along the way including a 33-point, 12-rebound effort against Carthage College on December 4.

A year ago, Carissa Verkaik was named the d3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Rookie of the Year. This morning, she was announced as the d3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year while also landing a spot on the d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team for the second straight year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Hollland Christian High School, Verkaik averaged 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds a game while also blocking 123 shots for an average of 4.1 blocks-per-game. She also connected on 59.6 percent of her field goal attempts and 86.7 percent of her free throw attempts.

The 2011 Calvin softball team will look to improve upon a 2010 season that saw the Knights finish 11-24 overall and tied for sixth place in the final MIAA standings with a 6-10 conference mark. Of Calvin’s six league victories, two were against teams near the top of the league standings as the Knights upset third-place Trine and second place Adrian during the conference campaign while losing a narrow 4-3 decision to conference champion Alma. A large part of Calvin’s 2010 success was due to the pitching of Shelby Mast (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) who fashioned a 10-18 record along with an impressive 2.42 earned run average - en route to receiving All-MIAA second team honors.

COLUMBUS, OH - A fabulous foursome of track and field athletes packed a powerful punch for the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams Saturday at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Capital University. Behind a national championship finish by senior Rachel Boerner in the 400 meters and a national runner-up performance by senior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put, the Calvin women’s team finished in eighth place with 18 points, marking Calvin’s second top 10 national finish in three years at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. On the men’s side, Calvin used a national runner-up finish by sophomore Greg Whittle in the mile run and a fourth place finish by junior Nick Kramer in the 5,000 meters to finish tied for 12th place with 13 points.

COLUMBUS, OH - A pair of Calvin athletes advanced to the finals out of their respective prelim heats Friday night at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Capital University. Senior Rachel Boerner advanced to the finals of the women’s 400 meters while sophomore Greg Whittle advanced to the finals of the men’s mile run.The defending national champion in the 400 meters, Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) advanced to the finals with the fifth-fastest time (57.31) out the prelims. As a result, Boerner will run in the first of two heats of four on Saturday at approximately 5:35 p.m. Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) had the eighth-fastest time in the men’s mile prelims Friday, clocking in at 4:17.11. The Calvin men’s tennis team returns seven letterwinners from a team that finished 15-9 a year ago and in third place in the final MIAA regular season standings. Returning letterwinners include seniors Andrew DeVlieger and Roland Eldridge, junior Vashan Wright and sophomores Jarrod Brower, Brian DeMaagd, Preston Phillips and Philip Reinken. DeMaagd, Reinken and Phillips all recorded 13 wins in singles play in 2010. Calvin opens non-conference dual match play on March 17 when it travels to Grand Valley State University. Conference play begins on March 30 when the Knights journey to Albion. The Calvin Sports Information office caught up with head coach John Ross for a preseason outlook earlier this week and filed an audio report which can be found below:

Calvin College senior Rachel Boerner has been named the Division III Women’s Great Lakes Regional Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The senior from Bergenfield, N.J., recorded the second-fastest time this season in NCAA Division III over 400 meters, a season-best of 56.38 seconds. At the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Invitational, Boerner had a hand in 22½ team points. She won the 60 meters and the 200 meters and ran a leg on the Knights’ winning 4×400-meter relay to help lead Calvin to the women’s team title. A graduate of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Boerner is set to compete in the 400 meters this weekend at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be sending three individuals to the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled to be held March 23-26 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Scheduled to compete for the Calvin women’s team are sophomore Elizabeth Counsell and freshman Elise Kaufman while freshman Andy Krafft will represent the Calvin men’s team.The 2011 NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at the University of Tennessee. Last year the Calvin women finished 24th as a team with 43 points. The Calvin men sent one individual but did not score at the championship meet.

The Calvin women’s track and field team has climbed back into the Division III Top 25 Indoor Track and Field rankings as conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights are ranked 24th in this poll - the first time they have been ranked since mid-January. Calvin will be sending two individuals to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Capital University. Competing for Calvin will be senior Rachel Boerner in the 400 meters and senior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put.
