Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Teams Post National Qualifying Times at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE - On the first day of competition at the Grand Valley State Big Meet, the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams received a handful of sterling performances. On the women’s side, senior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) posted an NCAA III Indoor provisional qualifying time of 57.04 in the 400 meters, just missing an automatic qualifying mark. On the men’s side, junior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) posted an NCAA III Indoor automatic qualifying time of 14:25.80 in the 5,000 meters. Teammate Rhett Morici (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North HS) also had an NCAA III Indoor provisional qualifying time of 14:52.60 in the 5,000 meters.

Calvin concluded competition on Saturday.

At Look Back at 178th Meeting Between Calvin and Hope in Men’s Basketball

The 178th meeting between Calvin and Hope in men’s basketball took place back on February 5. Hope captured the game by a score of 76-70, overcoming a 42-29 halftime deficit. Calvin student video producer Mike Zaagman was there on February 5 and recaps the game in this video package.

Calvin Women’s Cross Country 1998 and 1999 National Champs to Reunite on Saturday

The Calvin women’s cross country national championship teams of 1998 and 1999 will reunite on Saturday as part of Calvin’s uKnight week activities. The Calvin teams will be honored at halftime of the varsity men’s basketball game against Alma College Saturday afternoon. Calvin’s 1998 team captured the national championship in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, recording a score of 124 points. The national title was the first in Calvin women’s athletics history. The following year, Calvin came back to repeat as national champion, recording a first place team score of 85 points at the national meet hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Calvin student video producer Mike Zaagman dug through the video archives recently and has produced a video looking back on Calvin’s back-to-back title teams.

Women’s Basketball Uses Second Half Surge To Pull Away From Olivet 67-40

After a nip-and-tuck first half, Calvin put the hammer down in the second half to roll to a 67-40 victory at Olivet Wednesday night. Calvin (19-4 overall, 13-1 MIAA) held Olivet without a field goal for the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the second half to pull away from the host Comets. Calvin led 31-23 at halftime but used a 15-3 run to open the second half to build a 46-26 second half lead. Calvin was led by sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with 18 points and 11 rebounds as she notched her 22nd collegiate double-double including her 11th double-double of the season. Sophomore Logan Marsh (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) also had a strong game with 10 points including a pair of three-point baskets to go with two assists and two steals. Men’s Basketball Slips Against Adrian - Now Locked in Five-Way Tie for Second Place in MIAA

The Knights fell short in their second consecutive conference game, falling to Adrian 75-63 Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena. Against the MIAA’s best defensive squad, Calvin shot 35.7% from the field, coupled with a meager 6-20 effort from beyond the 3-point arc. Adrian, on the other hand, was on fire.  The Bulldogs made 27 of their 50 field goal attempts and shot a lightning hot 57% from the parabola. Calvin is now locked in a five-way tie for second place with Adrian, Albion, Kalamazoo and Olivet for second place in the MIAA standings. All five teams are 6-5 in league play. Calvin will host Alma on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Split Squads Lead Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams at Albion and Olivet - Krafft Shatters Records

Due to scheduling complications, the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams participated in two MIAA dual meets on the same day and in the process, had to split up their squads to compete. The Calvin women managed to pick up two wins, defeating Albion 169-124 and Olivet 150-85. On the men’s side, Calvin fell to Albion 150-112 and to Olivet 154-131. In the men’s competition at Olivet, Calvin freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) had a record-breaking day as he shattered his own school record on the one meter diving board with a first place score (six dives) of 332.20 points, breaking his previous record of 311.10. On the three-meter board, Krafft broke the second-oldest record still in the Calvin men’s books with a score of 321.25. The score (six dives) eclipsed the previous record of 298.50 set by Bill VanEe in 1985. Both record-breaking scores were also NCAA III qualifying scores.

Men’s Basketball Falls at Olivet 71-69

OLIVET - The Calvin men’s basketball team dropped a 71-69 decision at Olivet Saturday afternoon. The two teams were tied 36-36 at halftime but Olivet used a second-half scoring run to take a 64-55 lead. Calvin rallied to within three at 67-64 and had a chance to tie but could not get a shot off. Olivet then used a layup and a free throw inside the final 20 seconds to seal the win. Tom Snikkers led Calvin in the loss with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Danny Rodts had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Olivet’s Michael McClary led all scorers with 29 points including 19 in the second half. Calvin is now tied for second place in the MIAA with Olivet and Albion as all three teams are 6-4 in league play.

Hope Hands Calvin First League Loss in Women’s Basketball

HOLLAND - The Hope women’s basketball team handed Calvin its first league defeat of the year, defeating Calvin 70-48 in front of more than 3,400 fans at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. With the win, Hope (20-1 overall, 11-1 MIAA) moves within a half-game of Calvin (18-3 overall, 12-1 MIAA) with Hope having played one less league game than Calvin. Hope gained control of the game with a 10-0 run to end the first half, giving the Flying Dutch a 37-23 halftime lead. Calvin scored the first seven points of the second half to close to within 37-30 but the Knights then went through a scoreless stretch of nearly seven minutes in the second half as Hope pulled away for the win. Calvin was led in defeat by sophomore Carissa Verkaik with 11 points and eight rebounds. The Knights committed 34 turnovers in the loss with Hope scoring 38 points off of Calvin’s turnovers.

Carissa Verkaik Named to Capital One Academic All-District Second Team in Women’s Basketball

Calvin College sophomore Carissa Verkaik has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV second team in women’s basketball in the college division as voted upon by the College Sports Information Director’s Association (CoSIDA). Capital One recently became the new sponsor of CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik carries a 3.51 grade point average while majoring in elementary education. As a sophomore center this year, Verkaik is averaging 18.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots per game. She is also connecting on 57.2 percent of her field goal attempts and 84.6 percent of her throw tries.

Men’s Basketball Comes-From-Behind To Gain Key Road Win at Kalamazoo

In a hard-fought road contest, the Knights of Calvin defeated the Hornets of Kalamazoo 72-69.The victory lifts Calvin (11-9 overall, 6-3 MIAA) into sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings, one game ahead of a four-team logjam that includes Albion, Adrian, Kalamazoo and Olivet at 5-4 in league play. Hope continues to lead the league standings at 8-1 in conference action. Sophomore Tom Snikkers led the way for Calvin in the win over Kalamazoo with 27 points and eight rebounds. Senior Brad Schnyders added nine points while freshman Tyler Kruis blocked six shots.
